Page dedicated to figuring out what exactly is up with these new instruments. zingus 19:29, 5 March 2006 (GMT)

Open Mic Night

Don't forget to come along to the first Open Mic Night today (Sunday)!

Well, it was a very successful night, I think. Great Lord Yendor apparently drunk too much early on and spent most of it out in the field with his hands over his ears, but today, while looking a bit hungover, visited players to teach them a song. Vashka 17:28, 3 April 2006 (BST)

In fact, he gave players who weren't quite talented enough some very special Pan Pipes of Peace, a one-use only version, but those who performed solos can play the song on their own instruments by using them to attack a monster. It seems to pretty consistently send the monster to sleep. Great! (Please add any more conclusions here) Vashka 18:28, 14 April 2006 (BST)

Was it also the last Open Mic Night? I thought it was going to be a regular (i.e. automated) event, and that I would have the chance to try out my skills. Apparently I now rock on the fiddle, and I want to show off. --Hotchpotch 13:16, 18 July 2007 (BST)

There hasn't been one a while, but each of the OMNs has been done whenever Great Lord Yendor felt like it. They have no schedule, no rhyme or reason, and often, no warning (though the latest OMN gave some warning). PotatoEngineer 13:49, 18 July 2007 (BST)
Where was the warning issued? Perhaps GLY could make it so that the description of the establishment included at least a hint. You could maybe have the barperson utter "Come for the Open Mic Night? It's not till next Tuesday". Or better yet "Here, you want to put your name down for it?" And if you click the button, you'll get a Palantir message the day before...or at least a bit before...I've been sat there for weeks if not longer, and haven't seen hide nor hair of an OMN. (Oh, and I'm aware this is looking like a discussion) --Hotchpotch 11:59, 19 July 2007 (BST)
Last time there was a message at the Fiddling Wizard Folk Club saying "coming soon" or somesuch, and then eventually a date IIRC. MrFoo 12:09, 19 July 2007 (BST)
ISTR the sorrounding squares bearing a message of some sort. They're quite rare. -- Sertularian 23:20, 19 July 2007 (BST)

Instrument Testing Chart

Please add to the chart below if you have tried to practice any intstruments. For those of you that have successfully practiced, it would be great to include amount of times, results of each time, AP cost, etc.

Name: Alignment Instrument Result

You can't seem to get the hang of it.

Harmonica Tambourine x2

Don't want to bother trying. Trade?

It seems quite easy.

It seems quite easy.

Accordion, Harmonica

Harmonica for trade

You feel natural with this instrument,Your a very Talented Musician.

Well that was quick. (About 45 minutes). The instruments are aligned as follows:

  • Water - Tambourine
  • Earth - Accordion
  • Fire - Fiddle
  • Air - Harmonica

I'm Air-aligned and found a harmonica - when I practised it "seemed quite easy", so this confirms the air-harmonica theory. PuddinPop 02:02, 6 March 2006 (GMT)

Now to find out if they have any other effect...

I have a triangle with my fire aligned char, this is what I get when I practice "You practise the Triangle. It gets boring after a while." ---jhvh1

How much practise does it take to get better at playing? Does it only work with the proper alignment? Red Guard

  • Taking a look at the info on the new items list, Vashka has gone through 3 or four rounds of practice/improvement. As of right now, it looks like the instruments are based on alignment as shown above but I don't know that there has been a ton of testing done yet in regards to trying to learn other instruments after you've mastered one etc.
  • I practiced four times - 30AP for the first, and 5AP for each after that. The fourth time, it said "You've had enough of music for a while." I guess even I can't stand the accordion after a while... Geayzus 12:22 6 March 2006 (GMT)
  • I practised for a fifth time on the Accordion (still 5AP) - got the message that "You're a fairly talented musician." Trying again got me the "You've had enough of music for a while" message again. --Geayzus 17:13, 7 March 2006 (GMT)
  • The sixth practise session - "You practise the Accordion. You feel natural with this instrument. You're improving." Now it just tells you in the pane that "You've had enough of practising music for today." I'm beginning to dig this - as soon as I'm done with what I'm working on, I'm heading off to the club... --Geayzus 13:23, 8 March 2006 (GMT)
  • Same bit after the seventh. --Geayzus 02:59, 11 March 2006 (GMT)
  • I'm afraid to say I haven't been keeping track, but I just received the message "You practice the Fiddle. You feel natural with this instrument. You're improving. You're a very talented musician." (my emphasis). I wonder if this means I am still yet to reach my full potential, if I am "still improving"? --Hotchpotch 14:47, 24 March 2006 (GMT)

Note that there is a fiddling wizard club run by lord Yednor in windy city (or perhaps it's just outside the town proper where the taxes are lower). There they sell triangles (the quasi-musical instrument). I bought one and practiced it for 30AP and got the message "it gets boring after a while". I immediately tried to practice again for 5AP and I got the "you've had enough of music for a while." (Apparently the triangle is even harder to take than the accordian). I speculate that anyone can play the triangle (I'm earth aligned). The only other instrument I have is the tambourine, but I note that the message has changed when I equip it. Perhaps after I master the triangle and the accordian, I'll be able to learn the others? (I can't test anything just now because I've had enough of music). If you are looking for a place to jam with folk instruments, I would think that a folk tavern is just the place. In the tavern there's an add for an open mic night. Hendsch 13:45, 6 March 2006 (GMT)

I've now practised about 5 times, and I'm still only fairly good at it. 30AP for the first, 5AP for subsequent practices. I haven't felt like practising for about 10 hours after each go. Anyone got further than this yet? I want to know what happens when I get really good...will check out the club, too. Vashka 14:03, 6 March 2006 (GMT)

I'm still only fairly good. Music is hard. Vashka 17:13, 7 March 2006 (GMT)
Perhaps you have to practice in the fiddling club at the open mic to improve further. I finally managed to get a fiddle off of a brute squad of all things and am hanging around Air City/Thieves Forest, so once I get a bit more AP, I'll start testing that out.Zingus 17:17, 7 March 2006 (GMT)
My third or fourth time playing the accordion, I got the message "You feel natural with this instrument. You're improving." I waited about a day between practice sessions.

On the bottom of the second edition of The Citizen, it says, "Fiddling Wizard Open Mic Nights Begin (Page 4)." Has anyone gotten a chance to check this out yet? Perhaps a payoff for all the practicing... Zingus 18:36, 27 March 2006 (BST)

I've found that if you try to attack a monster whilst holding a musical instrument (like I did just now by accident) there's a chance you'll make it friendly, so you can just walk past it (I did it on a SMALL AIR DEMON). No idea what the percentage chance of working is, or if the instrument could be destroyed in the attempt. MrFoo 16:27, 13 April 2006 (BST)

MrFoo, did GL Yendor teach you the song after the Open Mic Night? If so, looks like this is how you use it. Fantastic! (Apparently the way to use the Pan Pipes of Peace is to attack with them, too) Vashka 18:09, 14 April 2006 (BST)

Yeah, he did. MrFoo 19:39, 14 April 2006 (BST)
Cool. So, is it working every time for you? It hasn't yet not worked for me, but I haven't tried it very much. I've also discovered that even a triangle can play soothing music. Vashka 19:42, 14 April 2006 (BST)
I've only done it once, and that was by accident, I didn't want to risk breaking my fiddle as I don't have a spare at the moment. MrFoo 19:58, 14 April 2006 (BST)
Ah, ok. I was going to suggest you try with a different instrument, but I've just failed to impress a monster with a non-natural instrument, so there's probably no point. Vashka 20:08, 14 April 2006 (BST)

So, has anyone noticed a level of skill above "You're a very talented musician"? I'm wondering if I'm throwing away 5AP every day fruitlessly chasing the status of Fiddling Genius. --Hotchpotch 01:41, 20 April 2006 (BST)

I've not practiced for a while, and upon selecting my Fiddle it said "you should practice more often" (or similar) and cost me 20AP to practice and said:

You practice the Fiddle.
You feel natural with this instrument.
You've got a tiny bit better.
You're a very talented musician.

MrFoo 11:26, 5 June 2006 (BST)

How do you learn songs on yo instruments Venom 05:14, 11 July 2006 (BST)

Today I got this...

You are very warm.
You practice the Tambourine.
You feel natural with this instrument.
You're improving.
You rock.

I guess that daily practising paid off, now that I ROCK, I just gotta figure out if I can do anything new. Gretchin 22:15 EST 11 July 2006

I've been practicing every day and I just got:

You practice the Fiddle.
You feel natural with this instrument.
You're improving.
You're a very talented musician.

So now I'm a music critic? I did seem to come down from licking a toad at the same time so maybe it was a coincidence! Rhapsodie

You get the "Boooorring." message when you come down off the toad sweat. Odd that you got it between practising and getting the results, though. -- Sertularian 13:32, 28 January 2007 (GMT)
It was hilarious timing! Rhapsodie 23:55, 28 January 2007 (GMT)
