New largest sandcastle/city

Took me a few years, but I finally pulled the trigger on it. At 5,432,165 units of sand, I believe the record has been smashed. It's on the eastern end of the northernmost beach of the Wizard's Retreat, if you're interested. I would certainly not blame you if you were not, though. --Nuru nuru 21:59, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Inaccessibility

its funny i thought the game had been down for the last 6 months, because i can not log in. but if i create a new player i can. so i guess i need to report a bug, unless you hve any other advice you can email me at mumblingmatthew@gmail.com --rea 1 06:55, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

Opportunities with the Flying Party

I have fairly recently found the Flying Party; it is currently in Oz, at 83E 217216S. This may be a good time for anyone with something to do there to do it; I plan to move it to the 'Kingdom once everyone is done with it there. If you are coming, please let me know so that I do not move it away too early. Plopfill 16:58, 26 September 2014 (BST)

It is now over the mainland, at 84E 44S. --Plopfill 15:21, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

Is there anybody out there?

It's been a while since I've logged in. The wiki looks pretty unpopulated. Has the Great Age of Cities passed? Are the rest of us to spend the remainder of history blundering around in a once mighty land like so many Vandals amongst the ruins of Rome?! Will the Firefly ever come back?!?! -Scary Mike 14:52 EST, 11 November 2013

It is a little lonely, every few months I stop back in and wander around a little bit. Hbookbinder 02:01, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
I log in now and then but I've been sat on Holiday Island for yonks and haven't wandered the realm in quite some time. I do see you occasionally Scary Mike and give you the occasional poke with a pointy stick, sing a drunken song and remember the old times ;) Chad 18:51, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

What have I missed?

Apparently someone broke the world, but what else has happened? The last thing I remember was finishing the Ultimate Altar of Air, I think. I don't recall when that was but the flatland had also just opened back then. Since then, I've umm.. Been frozen in ice in the North! No, wait, that was Captain America. Well, so anyway, what's new and exciting? -Jon 14:35, 25 September 2012 (BST)

Well, it was nice

I give up. It takes forever to get the log-in page, and I haven't actually been able to get into the game itself for several weeks, nor had any real game play in about a year. I had a lot of fun, and having been playing since before the creation of the Great Desert. Love the jokes. See you around. Long live the 'King!! Dendrast 03:41, 23 June 2012 (BST)

Poisoning / AP Bug question

Does anyone know whether a poisoned character who gets down to 1 HP starts losing AP when poisoned? That might explain why my poisoned alt is now negative and in three hours his "time to positive AP" appears to have changed by less than an hour (if I'm remembering correctly). BlaisedeC 02:35, 27 March 2012 (BST)

More like there's something wrong with the AP regeneration. I logged in 200 AP short of max (1000 maxAP), no clear reason why this would be, and some people have lost a hundred AP for hitting a cow or somesuch. S. Mackie 01:04, 28 March 2012 (BST)

Whiskey Bravo, Citizens

LOYAL HILLYANS!
S. Mackie of the Knightly Order of Tubthumping would like to welcome all new and returning Citizens and other creatures of the realm. Sadly, he lacks the means to throw a party, but y'all are welcome to have fun wherever and however you can. Just remember, if it all falls down, we're here to help you get back up again. S. Mackie 23:38, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Armoring

Well, Vulcan's 3 North of the Space Station for me. Now I really need some dang Gold Ores. I'll be putting up ads, but I thought I'd let folks know how it's working out. S. Mackie 22:48, 7 April 2011 (BST)

Update: Incen helped me with that, but now the Gas Bill diagram's broken. Not fun. S. Mackie 02:18, 8 April 2011 (BST)

Holy crap: High item count. Got any?

I'll preface this to say that I think I've been playing for three years or so. I don't use the dump, alchemists or anything else of the sort. I buy what I need, whatever breaks is either replaced or I plug along until I happen across it. I use the sorting office to occasionally move garbage into bags.

Today I realized I have just shy of 30,000 feathers.

Do you have large quantities of anything in particular? Why? Just simple laziness, like me? Or do you have 60,000 pieces of willow just because you can? --Ade 15:25, 27 May 2010 (BST)

My current feather count is 34069. I spent a lot of time air-aligned; it's lower than it would be otherwise. I've been playing a little longer than you (I think) so that would be about right. I don't try to accumulate them, other than a general affinity for killing Eagles, who sometimes have good drops. -- Sertularian 17:25, 27 May 2010 (BST)
When I was actively breeding horses I slaughtered many ducks for beans. Which I would assume drop feathers, but I've never really paid attention since I too never actively tried to collect them.
In spite of my sandcastle-making habit, I've still got 25000 units of sand. I used to have lots of stone, but I've dropped below 5000 at the moment. I've got some really weird ones though, mostly because I tend to do random bulk commands when high on AP instead of visiting a monastry, for example 3200 pointy sticks and 10000 shaky flakes. The one thing I just utterly and completely don't understand though is why on earth do I have 64 PC tower cases? -Scrumbucket 22:01, 27 May 2010 (BST)
I'm almost embarrassed to report that I've accumulated 50264 Pounds of Poop. My Dung Beetle cannot keep up. -- Sertularian 23:02, 27 May 2010 (BST)
Not too long ago I considered buying ten or so Dung Beetles just for their poop processing. Of all things I use the most, I run out of stones the most. --Ade 04:41, 28 May 2010 (BST)
90k phoenix feathers. Who here is looking to set records in that quest? I'm honor-bound to give them to one who is on such a personal mission. S. Mackie 00:39, 30 May 2010 (BST)
I just checked out of curiosity. I have 60993 feathers and 113134 units of sand. I attribute my feather count to a personal goal I had a few years ago of "having more feathers than Sert." I attribute my sand count to my refusal to sit on holiday island (until today) and burning through AP by collecting sand to get shells. JAD
I have 300273 feathers, the bulk of which probably came from farming the interior for a couple of years picking up HK components. Ravensdance 22:26, 2 June 2010 (BST)

Ratatoskr's Burrow: Expanded

Our Teleport Network located beneath the Fire Shrine has expanded to include a Den of Golden Fleece. South of the entrance you'll find a ticket office selling access to a locked den containing Wizard's Hat. In the future you'll see every flavor of hats here, appropriately priced.

The current asking price is 20k. Proceeds will go directly to public work projects such as parties, pentacles, additional low cost teleports and Cult operated quests.

If you disagree with our pricing or methodology, palantir Ade. We'd love to hear your feedback. --Ade 13:34, 24 May 2010 (BST)

Finding the Ambulance

Is there an easy way to find where the ambulance is? I could make a lap around the entire kingdom without pause and catch up to it, but that seems excessive. --Ade 21:12, 4 May 2010 (BST)

I seem to recall some experimentation on this, but I'm too lazy to look it up and cite references and stuff. As I remember it, the ambulance stops for an indeterminate amount of time at the Hospital in Water City (perhaps if somebody's in it? I don't remember exactly), therefore, attempts to time out the circuit and predict its whereabouts ultimately failed. -- Sertularian 22:49, 4 May 2010 (BST)
Anyone in the ambulance when it hits water city thinks it's at the hospital, but anyone outside and looking at the hospital will just see the hospital. Personally I always thought it did a lap when someone died. Kaos Dragon 02:50, 5 May 2010 (BST)

Congratulations Mackie

I'd just like to congratulate Macksting on joining the 1000+ maxAP club. Well done! -Jon 17:42, 23 April 2010 (BST)

Thank you! I would like to thank Gonzometro, a compatriot, good guy and guildmate, and the Guild of the Wyrm for being so often so willing to market to me until recent weeks. I would like to thank Bort, another good guy and guildmate, for giving me the financial savvy to purchase the Wyrm's products for so long. And thank you, Jon, for your encouragement.
My current hobby is the Poison Fist quest, part of a long hobby of perfecting my character's martial arts abilities. After that, I shall begin a long period of eye pod gathering and production, after which I shall begin the road of a Master Armourer, shall complete a few custom weapons, a full set or three of armor, a number of necessary Guild bits (as I expect the Cult to wax and wane over this very long period of time, and to need periodic repairs) and then, after another period of recharging Eye Pods, will go on as a disturbingly well-equipped fighter before I decide to go back to maging.
My priority will always be Tubthumping, of course. S. Mackie 21:42, 23 April 2010 (BST)
Addendum: It's an odd thing, knowing that I have so outstripped my starting max AP that I get a yellow-fonted warning when I'm within 50 AP of sinking so low. There's something so odd, really, about getting warnings when I'm as low as 200 AP. S. Mackie 00:46, 24 April 2010 (BST)

Eye Pod Priorities

Pocket Watches (Time Warps) - Alternative: Hunting
Sharp Swords (Killing Blow)
Elemental Stones (Astral Plain)
Olives (Wizard's Retreat)
Kraken Meat (Teleport to Shop)
Rivets and Water Wings (Water Walking) - Alternative: Unequip my size-14 dragon and never get him back
Noooooo!!!!! Sertularian 22:41, 11 May 2010 (BST)
See, now I'm wondering which of those is the cause of that Big No. S. Mackie 05:55, 12 May 2010 (BST)
I imagine the "man falling off a cliff -- Noooooooooo!" of Sertularian's is with regard to your dragon. Syagrius 19:30, 15 May 2010 (BST)
Probable. Still, it could be because of the rivets. :) S. Mackie 09:18, 16 May 2010 (BST)
Pints of Milk (Locate)
REJECTED: Stones (Toad) - Alternative: Cocktails
Wouldn't becoming a toad unequip your size 14 dragon? Syagrius 19:30, 15 May 2010 (BST)
Shazbot. You're right. Duly noted. S. Mackie 09:18, 16 May 2010 (BST)
Eggs and Maps (Map)
Blubber (Align spells) New entry. Rarely useful, but immensely so on rare occasion.
Pearls (Recall) New entry. Rarely useful, but immensely so on rare occasion.

I've gotten pretty used to forcing spells lately.
If you were to quit being a sorcerer and take up armouring, but didn't really want to quit being a sorcerer, what spells would you most miss? What components should I collect? What will I hate most about no longer being a sorcerer? S. Mackie 19:44, 9 May 2010 (BST)
Addendum: I already intend to become Pure elemental before completing this metamorphosis, and I intend to stock up a considerable number of elemental balls. They're simply more efficient apiece than the nearest comparable custom weapon at that damage. 19:51, 9 May 2010 (BST)

Clocks for time warp were pretty useful. So were sharp swords for killing blow. Besides that I forced a lot, too. --Ade 10:48, 10 May 2010 (BST)
Noted. Thanks, Ade! Still thinking about this. Of course, I could hunt for time warps, but it's harder. If I have the scrolls and pocket watches, I think I'd prefer to make Eye Pods for it.
Still, given how many sheep eyes I'm already looking at, I should consider alternatives.
More suggestions! S. Mackie 16:23, 10 May 2010 (BST)
I use Teleport to Shop a heck of a lot. Gotta keep the shop up, and it provides and easy way from OZ. Oh, and it'll even get you out of space. The others are mostly like Third Aid and Enduring Strength (not needed for a proper general). I do like waterwalking. Fungal Spray works for rainbow blades when you don't have a mushroom (but you need one to eye pod it). Do you care to go to the astral plane?density 00:41, 11 May 2010 (BST)
If you need to get to the astral plane (like I did to complete the poison hand quest) - breaking a spirit sword works rather well. Syagrius 01:20, 11 May 2010 (BST)
R'lyeh works for the astral plane as well, but not for the universe of shrimp (although once you have all the CDs why bother?) --naath 10:29, 11 May 2010 (BST)
For SCIENCE! I'd just hate to dewizard only to find out that place suddenly became incredibly important to me. I don't actually intend to go, I just intend to secure the means. S. Mackie 09:19, 16 May 2010 (BST)
I expect that if it suddenly becomes important to anyone but wizards, they'll find a way there. And if it suddenly becomes important to wizards again, you'd have to change back anyway.... --Dragon 16:49, 16 May 2010 (BST)
SCIENCE!!! Besides, what harm is there in having a few of the things around? A little more mana, a few more Sheep Eyes. This just isn't worth the argument.
Besides, what if somebody needs Tubthumped there? S. Mackie 19:04, 16 May 2010 (BST)
Adding these as we go. Fungal Spray's out; it takes a mushroom to cast it from an Eye Pod anyway, so you may as well eat the mushroom unless you're trying to grief people. I'm not the griefing sort, generally speaking. Up until this shift, however, Fungal Spray has been my usual method of using Rainbow Blades. It's a nice spell if you can force it.
Would breaking a Spirit Sword allow one to occasionally hit the Universe of Shrimp? S. Mackie 05:27, 11 May 2010 (BST)
I doubt it. Syagrius 05:51, 11 May 2010 (BST)
Yar, and me Recalls be reserved for another site, ar. Gonna need some Astral Plain spell pods, but I think I'll be labeling them Shrimpish and investing in Spirit Swords. S. Mackie 07:23, 11 May 2010 (BST)
Edit: I'm told Shrimp-aligned stuffs might teleport one to Shrimpland? 19:01, 7 September 2010 (BST)
Addendum: I'd like to SCIENCE! now and then, so I've got some locating and mapping spells around just for if I need 'em. Or want 'em. Thankfully, these should be easy to put in the hands of others for recharging. Some of these, however, will be needed or wanted in such quantity and frequency that it'll still be easier to do it meself in advance. S. Mackie 07:27, 11 May 2010 (BST)

Eye Pod Numbers

Okay, sounds like we've got enough priorities for now. I might go to the trouble of making one of nearly every spell into an Eye Pod, just for convenience, and I'm still open to suggestions, but for now I think this will have to do. But how many?
Anybody here go through the transition of Sorcerer to Armourer? What did you miss most? In this case, I'm particularly curious about what you missed most often; what will I need to stock up on what I wouldn't have considered? S. Mackie 06:58, 15 May 2010 (BST)

I didn't kill much as an Armourer. I did the four quests, and made some weapons for Turtle Hunting later while doing my time. What I missed most was the ease of travel, alignment changes, and other humdrum everyday stuff. -- Sertularian 14:11, 16 May 2010 (BST)
Technically, of course, I could use cocktails for alignment change.
What kinds of humdrum magic did you miss besides travel and alignment? I'd hate to learn the specifics only after I can't do anything about them. S. Mackie 19:06, 16 May 2010 (BST)
Addendum: I'm going to need a lot of Wizard's Retreat spells, aren't I. S. Mackie 18:19, 18 September 2010 (BST)

Porgessr

  • 1000 of each variety of elemental ball. I shall endeavour to keep levels about 1000.
  • Total of 92 Eye Pods, unless some are hiding in bags.
  • A fairly decent stock of most components, but short on some scrolls
  • 1 Smite Pod, 1 Killing Blow Pod, 1 Amok Pod, 7 Wizard's Retreat pods. Given my supply of scrolls, this may take a while.

Bundling

What spells should be on the same pod? I've thought it rather reasonable to combine Amok, Smite or Killing Blow spells with accuracy spells, as clearly these are to be used when you'd really rather get in a solid, decisive hit.
What other spells should be bundled together? S. Mackie 18:43, 18 September 2010 (BST)

Precasting

It should be no surprise, given the first entry under Porgessr (above), that I'm casting some spells ahead of time. There are, after all, a reasonable number of spells which have a physical product which sits happily in one's inventory.
At the moment, I'm looking at making a few Spirit Catchers just because I can; a few Shimmering Thingies; and, at the very least, 1000 each of the Elemental Ball spells. Also considering Miracle Pills, even granted their limitations.
It happens I've also had cause to produce a fair number of upgraded Elemental Swords, principally because I would like to abuse a Rainbow Wand for a while and see if I can make something humorous of them. Wands likewise, of both the +1 and +2 varieties.
I'm finding I rather like these. If I must force these spells, I can, which is in no way true of crafting spells into Eye Pods, and the filing system is much easier for these spell products. Unlike the Eye Pods, I simply either have them or I do not. Eye Pods will require a bag of full Eye Pods and a bag of Empty, though, or a constant renaming of each to reflect their statūs.
As always, I'm open to suggestions. S. Mackie 21:29, 7 October 2010 (BST)

Purchasing!

I know this is something of an advertisement, but it is also a sign of my progress that I am requesting spell components. As stated above, I'd already determined it was likely I'd run out of the basics of magic before I ran out of a desire to use them.
Currently, I'd really like a few more Smite scrolls. It's a very handy spell, even with an otherwise decent damage multiplier, and lovely for problem solving. S. Mackie 04:06, 15 December 2010 (GMT)

Shit Fuck Howdy, I've Stopped Caring

Callisto, my Big Kat, is dead. I've stopped caring so hard that I let my kat die. I raised that kat from a kitten. That kat was why I got a goldfish.
I fucking give up. No amount of preparation is worth this level of ennui. S. Mackie 04:32, 22 March 2011 (GMT)

Well, that's interesting. I logged in today to find my character surrounded by Ghosts of Callisto. 150 HP each. I wonder if this is a reference to Ghosts of Mars. S. Mackie 16:23, 24 March 2011 (GMT)

Well, it didn't bring the kat back, but...

I'm now a Master Armourer. I think I'll reregister as a Knight long enough to get my Sgt. stripes at last, then go back to Maging.
Boy is this gonna be a lot of AP. S. Mackie 19:03, 16 April 2011 (BST)

Ratatoskr's Burrow: Now Open

The Cult has reopened its teleport network. We currently have a teleport to The School of Hard Knocks and one to Ninja Island, which we hope you will find useful. We intend to open an additional teleporter within several weeks, palantir suggestions to Ade.

You no longer need to travel to our slightly out of the way headquarters, either. Simply break a fire talisman and you'll be standing over Ratatoskr's Burrow. Just climb down.

Tickets currently cost 1,500 gold pieces. But we will be changing it up from time to time and accepting wood and other items as payment as well, depending on the network's needs. We hope you enjoy. --Ade 16:20, 17 April 2010 (BST)

That would be the straw that broke your back.

I checked in and had a number of "You are at the cutting edge of fashion" and other ordinary messages, then a notification of an incoming Palantir message, followed by "That would be the straw that broke your back." This was the last message in the list. I don't know if it's related to the Palantir message or not, but either way, it's a new one on me. I was alone at the time and not performing any action (although I don't know of any actions that give that particular message, anyway.) Has anyone encountered this before? Do you know what it means? -- Sertularian 23:53, 13 April 2010 (BST)

I still think that sounds like a "you're wearing too much stuff" message. Could your browser have re-posted an action when you logged in? What did you have on at the time? --Dragon 04:03, 14 April 2010 (BST)
I suspect it actually means there's a limit to how much it'll backlog for you, so there's some news you didn't get. Probably more fashion statements, for example. S. Mackie 16:50, 17 April 2010 (BST)

whatdaya kill?

So, what's your favorite thing to slaughter? Me? I really like to off an ophannim. The numbers are just silly. And rats. I always feel like I'm doing good for the city when I kill another rat.density 02:40, 10 April 2010 (BST)

Ducks. I'll take a step or two out of my way to off one. Syagrius 06:09, 10 April 2010 (BST)
I've got a couple of clinic invites from Thunder Birds so I'll always dispatch one if I'm passing. And Triffids. GrumpyNick 07:45, 10 April 2010 (BST)
I'll never pass up an opportunity to kill a triffid, roc or crocodile. Besides that? I typically will go out of my way if I see a bat, even though I have a huge number of antidotes and I'm hardly ever poisoned. I also like killing llamas. I read somewhere that they're good for a good drop on occasion. --Ade 10:58, 10 April 2010 (BST)
only the 7 humped llamas. Or, really, as the number of humps go up so do the drops. (of course it's hard to know how many humps a llama has without giving them a whack, but...)density 18:59, 11 April 2010 (BST)
Bats have been good for me--I once got five glass swords off bats in a single afternoon. (Yeah I know, it was a bug. But you know what? I don't care. Still awesome!) -Scrumbucket 09:32, 13 April 2010 (BST)
Vampires and crocodiles. Every once in awhile I go on a zombie slaying spree, but that hasn't happened in a good long while. -Jon 12:46, 10 April 2010 (BST)
I've got something like a dozen "must-kill" monsters, but the one at the top of that list is wolves. I didn't always have a problem with them, but ever since they became a vector... I also like killing hydras but don't do it often enough. -Scrumbucket 06:13, 11 April 2010 (BST)
I'm with GrumpyNick on the T-Bird. The other one I seem to get good drops from is snakes. I can't count the number of glass swords I've pulled out of a snake's gulletdensity 18:59, 11 April 2010 (BST)
I've got a little list (she's got a little list)... no, really, I have a big list of about, 70 or so that I'm trying to keep on top of the kill tables for. Ophanim are just really really hard to find. But not very hard to kill, because OBVIOUSLY you just whack'em with a Gorgon's Head and BAM dead. Their drops are a bit pants (don't tell me you *use* the strange powder? vile stuff... but if you do I can sell you some!), considering the effort one has to go to to find the blasted things. --naath 10:17, 12 April 2010 (BST)
only use I have for strange powder is to sell it in my shop. Dunno why people buy it, but... And, sure a gorgon's head would work, but... Do you know how much XP you get for hitting an aligned Oph with a baned glass sword while under the influence of a Smite spell (and a blue pill?). It's silly.density 13:58, 12 April 2010 (BST)
heee, well, clearly I should sell your shop some ;-) or sell it myself... I don't need XP, and glass swords, smite spells and blue pills and the baning stuff are... valuable --naath 10:17, 13 April 2010 (BST)
Call me curious. It's not like I need the XP. How much? S. Mackie 05:18, 13 April 2010 (BST)
This is a trick question, right? I thought blue pills didn't work on glass swords. (Even without a bane it's ridiculous though. 32 million with "just" alignment, Smite, and glass sword, yes?) -Scrumbucket 09:32, 13 April 2010 (BST)
I'm don't think they do. But I've only baned one glass sword, and that was because I was running lowish on them. But, if you hit an aligned Oph with a baned glass sword it's 1000x100x4x180 = 72000000XP. The Oph is worth 117,964,800XP total. Just killing one Oph will put you at #21 on the top XP table. And yeah, XP is not worth anything. But I think the huge numbers are just silly, so I like killing Ophanim the hard way.density 13:34, 13 April 2010 (BST)

Woops! Those Taxis are my fault!

In an attempt to take over the taxi leaderboard (for no other reason to restore myself as taxiest in the game) I may have accidentally created a glut of taxis. There are currently 77 of them in Windy City, over 300 in Water City and probably a few around the other stops as well. I blame the repeat action button and accept no responsibility for any actual wrong-doing on my part! -Jon 16:16, 6 April 2010 (BST)

A complete lack of cabals

I'm trawling near R'1yeh, and occasionally a cabal-themed message will appear in some area of the screen. So far, I've seen "If this were a cabal, you would feel vindicated in your persecution. Unfortunately, this isn't a cabal.", "There is a complete lack of cabals here.", and "If there is no cabal, I might have to start one." Is this happening to anyone else? Pet XP

I'm curious. I have a pet ferret who has 6,655 XP. She's 150 weeks old. There sure there are others who play more than I do, I'm sure of it. There's probably someone out there with a pet beyond the 10,000 XP barrier. Do you have any pets with crazy high XP? If so, please share. --Ade 12:08, 28 March 2010 (BST)

My alt Guildorn has a 77-week old minrilax with 10152 XP. Minrilaxes (minrilaces?) are the best for getting huge amounts of pet XP, as they have the highest max AP (240) and are thus least likely to have their AP overflow & go to waste. --Naimoigiant 18:36, 28 March 2010 (BST)

A sly ferret nabs some of your gold before he disappears into the shadows.

Here I am, enjoying a party at Harveys hall and then I see this phrase. And then everyone around me starts shouting that their stuff and gold is missing. I don't know how much or what I've lost. Maybe I don't attend enough parties or something but this type of event is total news to me. What just happened? Agzu 10:40, 26 March 2010 (GMT)

And then the second time: "A nefarious looking ferrets scurries into your pack. Before you know it he's stolen some of your gold. Before you can catch him he disappears in a puff of smoke."
Um. Are you sure anything's actually missing? A few people have the ability to "emote", which makes messages appear to others in the square (like talking, except not in quotes). --Dragon 14:16, 26 March 2010 (GMT)
So much for hoping it was something new and unexpected. Of course, I should probably finish all the quests and things out now before I go wanting more. -Jon 05:40, 28 March 2010 (BST)
The ones who won the auction was Stien and GrumpyNick. Royal_Charity_Auction#Custom_Emote Ask GrumpyNick, he has been active within the last 24 hours. --TerrorRemedy 09:47, 28 March 2010 (BST)
Before anybody goes too far with assigning blame, I think I should just point out that there is a way to achieve both the messages that appeared without any emote command or any new additions to the game. Something similar was done at a party before the auction ever occurred, as I recall. Ravensdance 22:57, 28 March 2010 (BST)
Ravensdance, very nice call. I hadn't noticed until you pointed it out, but you are absolutely correct. That's quite clever. Almost anyone could do it. -- Sertularian 23:17, 29 March 2010 (BST)
Pretty tricky indeed !--Solune 18:32, 31 March 2010 (BST)

That's it. Enough party for me \: Agzu 12:43, 26 March 2010 (GMT)

To Dragon's point, I'm quite sure you'll find nothing is actually missing. Since some people gained the "emote" ability at the Festival some time back, there have been similar pranks -- but there's no way you can steal anything from other players, except in the Thieves' Forest. I checked my gold totals carefully and they did not change after the last "Ferret" message. It's just someone having their jollies by freaking people out. -- Sertularian 20:16, 26 March 2010 (GMT)
Ferrets are mostly nocturnal - so you should only party during the day ;) Syagrius 04:36, 27 March 2010 (GMT)
Ferrets are crepuscular, actually. Heh. --Ade 11:40, 27 March 2010 (GMT)

Forum Stores for Computer Parts

does the forum store still change its inventory? I've not seen anything I different in a while, it seems. Certaintly not the parts I need. density 18:32, 23 March 2010 (GMT)

Interesting. I'll try to find the time to investigate this matter, but lately I'm very close to what has been a long-term goal in the game.
Maybe I'll also finally Smith after I've done that. But if it's simply broken, I might have the parts you need. S. Mackie 16:39, 25 March 2010 (GMT)
eh, I should probably just make note of what they are selling and see if it changes. I've just been noting that they've not had anything I need in a long long while.density 17:14, 25 March 2010 (GMT)
Some parts come up very infrequently. There's a table here that shows the seven distinct combinations of items sold and the probability of each. Some combinations come up just one time in twenty, and, of course, there are certain parts that only appear in those sets. (On the same page, someone made a brief attempt at noting the sets every day to look for a pattern.) What parts do you need, specifically? -- Sertularian 21:44, 25 March 2010 (GMT)

Speaking of Dying

I just discovered that when you die without insurance, your pets stop feeding themselves. Someone already reported the bug, pity I hadn't noticed before my hamster died. Anyway, apparently this can be fixed by giving your pets to someone else and having them returned? Would someone mind helping me do this? (I'm also looking for a miracle pill.) -Scrumbucket 17:19, 16 March 2010 (GMT)

I can help you out. You're also going to need a Pentacle. I can help you out there, too. I'm in Cloudland ATM, where and when would you like to meet? If you can help me out with Diamonds and/or a Strike, they would be welcome. -- Sertularian 00:03, 17 March 2010 (GMT)
All taken care of, thanks! -Scrumbucket 00:15, 18 March 2010 (GMT)

Insurance Policy

I recently aligned to ice and died. Apparently becoming ice aligned either cancelled my policy or I forgot to renew last time I kicked the bucket. Thankfully I remembered my general location and I was able to get to my guild and raid the store room for some weapons. I got my body back, but I need to renew my policy somehow.

Is this impossible for unconventionally aligned characters? Or am I missing something? --Ade 12:06, 16 March 2010 (GMT)

As far as I know (but I've never died while unconventionally aligned), insurance carries through an alignment change. I have cycled through, ahem, "several" of the alternate alignments, and back, and still had insurance. I know of no way to acquire insurance unless you're one of the primary four, though -- there are no shrines for the other alignments. -- Sertularian 00:00, 17 March 2010 (GMT)

Big Poly Dragons and pure

Hello, everyone still playing. I'm trying to become a pure player. And apparently the way to do that is through a rainbow wand, which is dropped by a big polychromatic dragon. The question is : where do I find these nice critters ?--Solune 23:29, 29 December 2009 (GMT)

from what I remember, they have a chance of spawning on Dragon Island. Or you can rust out a can of wyrms by walking around with it in swampy areas. Opening such will give a mutant poly. Of course, to kill such you'll want access to weird alignments. I would be happy to help, but I'm in the vents right now. I suggest trying to get ahold of sert. He did a good job of drumming up business for his weirdly colored wands a while back. I bet he still has a few.density 01:39, 30 December 2009 (GMT)
Big Polys do indeed spawn on Dragon Island, but only rarely. You'll probably have to spend a while there before you find one. --Dragon 16:48, 30 December 2009 (GMT)
Not a problem, I've got time--Solune 01:46, 31 December 2009 (GMT)
I do have some oddly colored wands, and I still play enough to keep some pets fed. PAYG me if you're in need. -- Sertularian 02:01, 8 January 2010 (GMT)

So! Hobbies? If you still play, anyway.

Among those of us what still play here, what have y'all been doing with your time?
For my part, I'm constantly trying to increase my maximum AP so as to be able to take a Long Retreat and still be able to take uppers afterward, all while potentially never actually exceeding my AP max. True, one can do this relatively well via good timing and Holiday Island, but I'm doing this on the hypothetical basis of future parties. S. Mackie 20:48, 4 December 2009 (GMT)

1) attempt to always keep a wiz hat on my head.
2) attempt to keep the store stocked (burns a fair amount of AP to skin tribbles and make flamin' swords)
3) when the extra ap start building, burn them to kipple. I'm trying to make an infinite supply all on my own.
4) big game hunting. I make a big game out of hunting the elite angels, you know the Ophanim and the Chayot, etc.
I also finally finished collecting all the weapons for the ninjas this year, and crossed the ocean on foot to get to the things down south. Now I'm looking for a tuna fish, and contemplating the two ultimate alters. That's about enough.density 15:42, 18 December 2009 (GMT)
Good hobbies. I recently lost in the "attempt to always keep a wiz hat" hobby, myself, though I'd held it far too long. S. Mackie 05:16, 20 December 2009 (GMT)
Mainly AP stacking and then I'll run through it all in bursts hunting with letters to try and get to the Wizard level though it's annoying and quite a long way off. Other than that, running through smaller quests that I've never done and collecting stuff. I should do the standing stones and totems I guess. Douro 11:48, 22 December 2009 (GMT)
Hmm. You wouldn't happen to need transit anywhere for this, would ya? I'm generally happy to help a wizard. S. Mackie 06:38, 23 December 2009 (GMT)
Nah I'm just sitting on Holiday Island until I feel in the mood to AP burn. Then I just grab stones to get me around or repeat action to head places quickly. I did have the Golden Condor for a a couple of days which was a lovely boost. I'll likely try that again next time. Ta though! Douro 12:39, 24 December 2009 (GMT)
Don't hesitate to ask. The wife's away with her side of the family, so I've got little enough to do right now anyway. S. Mackie 20:37, 24 December 2009 (GMT)

I still play. Although I have to admit I took an extended break. I was quite sad to learn that so many other people had the same idea. With my epic holiday island AP I completed the totems. I don't really have much else to do. The economy has slowed down a lot and I have a lot of gold left over from my arms dealer days. For the past month or so I've been hard knocks grinding. So far I'm at level 15 with enough to take me to 20. Once I hit 1,000 base HP I'm probably going to make a secret lair, a project I've been meaning to do for a long time now. Maybe some ninja training after that. Prthivi and I recently had a discussion about how weird the game would be one the second to last player quit. How everyone but bots would time out and go to limbo, guilds would collapse, etc. Have the GLs become disinterested in the game? Or just busy? I noticed we didn't get Christmas presents this year. I'm not mad or anything, I understand. It's just sad. I don't want the game to die. --Ade 15:01, 29 December 2009 (GMT)

Moreso, I miss being able to wrap and send gift boxes. But yeah, now you mention it, this is the first time we've not got pressies.
For my part, I'm at 1003 max HP and am questing after 1001 max AP. Already did the ninja training. However, I've never been an armourer, and I reckon you were one, so you're still ahead of me.
Wanna compete to be the last player standing? :D S. Mackie 18:21, 31 December 2009 (GMT)
Sure! Yeah. The only thing I haven't done is ninja training, pandora's socks and camera training. I spent a good deal of time as an armorer. It was fun, but not as much fun as brutally killing things and stealing their loot. --Ade 02:07, 4 January 2010 (GMT)

I'm still playing too. Gone Shaman and starting to prepare for the journey to level 3 Magic-type. Which at the moment mostly involves training Familiars which are easily fed while I wait for my mana to increase a little. Ream 22:16, 5 January 2010 (GMT)

Any clever names for the critters? Do you intend to keep them when you have too much mana to know what to do with it? S. Mackie 19:21, 17 February 2010 (GMT)

I'm making a Skean Dhu. It'll take 22955 units of work and it took over 11500 pieces of silver. It will do 100 damage (basic, unmodified), have accuracy of +2, and a life expectancy of 250. Probably be done sometime next fall, if I work hard. Meantime, I'll probably work on incresing my HP as much as possible. If I can find an anorak, I'll finish the Underground quest. I haven't the patience for the Vents. Dendrast 03:45, 13 March 2010 (GMT)

I'm honor-bound to lend an anorak to the needy. Funny story, that. Still need one? S. Mackie 08:37, 19 March 2010 (GMT)

I've crept back in over the past couple of months after parking on Holiday Island for quite some time. I've been playing with two alts, as well as playing with myself playing AS myself. Wyrd's been shamaning and completing quests as well as becoming very crafty, Jon's mostly been tweaking his shop (I got kind of bored after I hit the 1000 AP and HP mark) and Aazamon, one day, might become an armorer. For now he's just running a tiny little shop. -Jon 20:02, 18 March 2010 (GMT)

Neat. How'd you go about hitting 1000 maxAP? That is, after all, my current goal. S. Mackie 08:37, 19 March 2010 (GMT)
I began life air aligned, completed all the air quests and ate cucumber sandwiches FOREVER. I think I also got some from eating birthday cake, the Herman quests, etc. Unfortunately I can't give any sekrit methudz out because I never found any. I do advise keeping some other ideas afloat for afterward though - for so long I was so focused on that goal that when I hit it, I almost instantly began to lose interest in playing. There were very few quests I hadn't done at that point, and I wound up parked on Holiday Island to the tune of about 25k AP. -Jon 14:00, 19 March 2010 (GMT)
Still working on that 1000 maxAP. I'll need another 323 cucumbers, for one thing. Still, it sounds very much like Jon and I took the same path to get here. S. Mackie 18:52, 4 April 2010 (BST)
Right now I'm working on building up Wyrd's maxAP, but once I get done that I should wind up with more cukes than I need for myself, I'm sure we can work out a trade. One thing I recommend highly - if you find yourself wearing a pirate hate, get to Bentnob and see Hockney about buying magic beans in bulk. Then find a field, align properly and begin plowing and harvesting the cucumbers (re-align and grow wheat if you need it for the bread). Couple this up with some time warps, and you could theoretically get there relatively quickly, with only running out of AP to hold you back. Good luck with it! -Jon 01:08, 5 April 2010 (BST)
Sounds smashing. I've currently got 224 of the 311 cucumbers I need to finish off my peculiar needs. S. Mackie 08:09, 15 April 2010 (BST)
Gonzometro is a wonderful person. By use of a large backlog of AP, he crafted for me 250 Cucumber Sandwiches. With the 8 in my inventory (not counting the two in my shop), I had just enough to place myself at 1002 maxAP. S. Mackie 16:16, 23 April 2010 (BST)

And that's done for another year

Despite a few mishaps, it's been a fine party, and I would like to thank everybody for attending. If you're in need of mana, feel free to enjoy the Pentacle while you're up here. I may well keep the Water City portal going until it's gone. I, however, will be bound again for warmer climates. My annual Samhain/wedding anniversary party kept everybody warm in a cold and wintry land of wonder. Blessed be, Cities. See y'all next year if we're all still here.

Blood red skies in the morning,
Pitch-black heavens every night
Take them both as a warning
That the winter fire need be bright.
-
Fierce the blaze on the mountain
Sheds its light for miles around
While the stream and the fountain
Lie frozen and locked in the ground.
- (Chorus:)
 Now the Leprous White Lady
Leads her train of the lost
Leads the spirits through glade and wood
 And goodly fields of frost.
-
Summer's consort waxed brightly
The tall and golden-haired prince
And she came to him nightly
With pomegranate and quince.
-
Dead and gone is her lover
The most fair and radiant of all
Now she'll never recover
The king cut down in the fall.
- (Chorus)
While the climbing sun tarried
As if his marches were stayed
At midsummer they married
Mortal man and immortal maid
-
Has a king ever reckoned
What he gives for the boreal crown?
To be god but a second
Ere the sun starts his course ever down.
- (Chorus)
Through the summer and after
In the sere and brown of the fall
Days were filled with their laughter
And nights with their echoing call
-
But as autumn leaves smoulder
And the smoke slowly drifts through the air
So the young king grew older
And withered and died in despair
- (Chorus)
Nine white maidens attend her
Where she treads without leaving spoor
As she seeks her defender
Who shall wear the crown once more.
-
By the light of the beacon
You can see her pass through the ring
She'll not weary nor weaken
Till she finds her winter time king.
- (Chorus:)
 Now the Leprous White Lady
Leads her train of the lost
Leads the spirits through glade and wood
 And goodly fields of frost.

Looking for Hamsters

Looking for the current whereabouts of the hamsters Dodson-Truck (id: 37318) or James Marsters (id: 37337) for stud purposes. If you have one of them, please PAYG/Talk/IRC me. Ream 18:40, 10 August 2009 (BST)

I finally found Dodson-Truck in the possession of Ade. He's in Limbo, however. Gonzometro 04:29, 11 August 2009 (BST)
Thanks for looking. At least the hamster still exists and Ade might come out of Limbo sometime... Ream 09:49, 11 August 2009 (BST)

I'm looking for a Slightly Less Bored Player

I have a Treasure Map which leads to the middle of the Taxing Cellar. I'd like to hire somebody to retrieve the treasure for me. S. Mackie 04:49, 3 July 2009 (BST)

Are items included to get through the taxing cellar? :)--LimeHan 23:55, 3 July 2009 (BST)
Not in the first draft of the bargain. I might be convinced to run a scholarship to help somebody through; if I had enough to spare to just walk through, though, I'd not be foisting the task off on somebody else. S. Mackie 06:19, 4 July 2009 (BST)
Just as a reminder, if you've already worshipped at the Ultimate Altar of Earth, you can walk through toll-free. Follow the link for details. -Scrumbucket 08:05, 4 July 2009 (BST)
I've done it. I just don't quite feel like bagging so much inventory just to resolve a treasure chest, and figured somebody who hadn't done the Taxing Cellar or didn't mind bagging inventory might have the impetus to resolve it for me. S. Mackie 09:06, 4 July 2009 (BST)
If you would consider providing the items I'm missing to do the quest (list here), I would be happy to do it. Hey I would even trade you anything I got you find useful--Che-T 11:54, 5 July 2009 (BST)
There are certain items on that list I'd very happily throw you; got several spare onions, have been overly protective of my stock of Hoes ov Destruction, and Tolkien cocktails are cheap. However, even given that I am not trying to buy this treasure chest with quest items per se, that's quite a lot there that I don't quite feel I'll be able to throw in freely.
Hmm. But for the fact that you've still so much to get, I might try to bargain you down to one or two expensive items; they'll be hard for you to get anyway, and much of the others can simply be grabbed. S. Mackie 19:33, 5 July 2009 (BST)
Yeah some of the easier to get items, I just haven't cared to get them, since I'm missing some of the harder to get. I can probably narrow that list to just a very few. Drop me a line if you want to keep the barter running ;) --Che-T 04:31, 6 July 2009 (BST)

Star in your own all-singing, all-dancing production of Bridge on the River Kwai. If you need a choreographer I'd be glad to help. Schnorrer 19:12, 24 June 2009 (BST)
Have you finished all of the actual quests yet (including advanced martial arts, L3 wizardry, etc.) or are you just whining because there are none left that you want to do? Even if you have finished everything that was ever coded, there are plenty of options. Examples include finding mysterious envelopes, topping some monster-kill leagues, starting a new character, and even taking a page from some of the more creative players and starting your own quest such as finding/making one of every item in the game. In my opinion, you can't complain about development in cities. This game is pretty large for a free online game, and it is the result of quite a bit of work in the past. If you want to have control over how quickly quests are added, you can code your own game. If all else fails, I hear there are a bunch of other options for how to spend your time on the internet (I think Kingdom of Loathing, Runescape, and FED are still free of charge). --JAD 20:01, 24 June 2009 (BST)

Holiday Island Question

I put my characters on holiday island prior to going into hospital to have a baby (a little boy we called Nathaniel) and all three ended up in Limbo. The wiki page says that "some things" cancel the holiday island affect - does anyone know what they are? I am going to be playing very irregularly for a while and would prefer not to end up there again! Rhapsodie 23:01, 12 June 2009 (BST)

Just about anything that overrides a terrain space, like a hill fort or fireworks display. Lava bombs do it too. Not sure of anything else though. Syagrius 03:08, 13 June 2009 (BST)
That's pretty odd. I believe I've been hanging out on the same square that you were on, for at least as long, and there's nothing un-Holiday-Islandish about it. I'm still happily gaining AP. (I didn't go to Limbo, but I've been logging in every day to feed my pets.) -- Sertularian 14:13, 13 June 2009 (BST)
P.S. Oh, and congratulations on your little boy!! Does he have a Cities account yet? -- Sertularian 14:15, 13 June 2009 (BST)
Not yet. If I do create him one, I'll wait till after he's sleeping better and my life feels less surreal! As far as the terrain goes, none of the characters have done anything like what you guys all describe - they gained AP while they were on the island; they just got booted after a week! :( -- Rhapsodie 03:59, 14 June 2009 (BST)
I'm pretty sure boats and sea horsies on the beaches cancel it too. Congrats on the kid! Kaos Dragon 18:57, 13 June 2009 (BST)

Dragon Available

Lambton is a 7 week old male fire dragon who likes to eat weapons, dragon's blood and pig products. He will be rideable when he grows up. Unfortunately, he had an autofeeding accident and is currently ... sleeping. Saurian Brandy Effects

I noticed a distinct availability of replacement in this substance, and realized I'd never had any. Given that I could get more, I decided to research its effects on the wiki, but found none listed. I gave it a whirl, and it appears that its effects outstrip its alcoholic content by quite a degree.

There's alcohol in your blood (50), you are dizzy (30) and there's saurian brandy in
your blood (100).

Mind, this could be a result of the Rock Soc Pub Crawl; it does mean, however, 50 sober AP of unique effect after the dizziness and alcohol have worn off. I must say I'm intrigued, but am feeling very uncreative about what to look for! So I figured, as long as Gonzometro's asking for help with boozy implications, I'd ask for the lot of you to also assist me in figuring this out. S. Mackie 17:28, 24 April 2009 (BST)

Mixology Help

I've been systematically testing the mixology drinks and I've hit a wall. There are still many cocktails whose effects are unknown. If my reasoning is correct, there are 2 good effects and 1 bad effect that are still unknown. I've started testing movement modifiers, flight, climbing, etc. but to no avail so far. That's where you come in. Give me some suggestions of things to test! My test char is very low-level, so I can test pretty much anything. If you correctly guess a missing effect, I'll give you 3 of each cocktail that has the effect plus 6 cocktails of your choice (or something equally enticing). My other account, Guildorn, was sailing over the ocean to meet with Goibhnu when I noticed some oddly-colored squares on the map. They turned out to be three whales: a Spooky Whale, a Shale Whale, and what I assume is a Green Whale several squares away. Excited to have finally encountered my first whale while playing Cities, and armed with a fully-grown elite minrilax in need of exercise, I immediately headed towards the nearest one intent on slaying it. However, the Spooky and Shale whales are directly adjacent, and for some reason neither of them have "heads" that can be attacked. While trying to figure out how to harm them, I sailed directly onto the Spooky Whale and then, thinking it might help, I got off my boat. Unfortunately, the whales are still unattackable (even if I weild a harpoon), and now I'm trapped! I can't reboard my boat, as I'm not on the water, and putting on my one winged boot doesn't let me leave. I even tried eating a few kraken pieces and drinking a brandy alexander & then considering kipple, but both methods repeatedly failed to move me to a different square. (Also, interestingly, taroting whales while standing on the spooky whale told me that the "nearest one" was 4 squares to the south east, referring to the green whale.)

So, what do I do? --Naimoigiant 18:36, 18 April 2009 (BST)

Would you like a summons? Incen 19:07, 18 April 2009 (BST)
I assume you don't want to talisman out...do you have an Air Ship or other flying transport you can try? If not, you can summon me and then get on Puff's back. I'm not sure it will work, but it might. Strange that you were able to get on the whale in the first place, though--I don't think that's been possible before. (A GL will likely have to fix these two whales, though.) --Dragon 19:14, 18 April 2009 (BST)
Alright. I've summoned you and gotten on Puff. I assume that my inability to move him is normal? If you can move us off the whale, would it be too much trouble to take me to 36°E, 135°S? If it is, just drop me next to the green whale's head, assuming it has one. --Naimoigiant 22:07, 18 April 2009 (BST)
Success! You're now next to the green whale. --Dragon 22:13, 18 April 2009 (BST)

Borked toon

Alright so Douro, my main, plays off and on. For some time I've been leaving him on Holiday Island or lately Wizards retreat to get some AP stored up to have some fun playing.

My AP regen rate, to-hit and max HP took quite a bit of damage way back when Frostbite and other such things caused permanent (sob) damage and Red Bull (oopsie!) etc started to have side effects. Now that I'm playing him way often, I'd really really like to fix these things. HP I can do through Hard Knocks so that's okay. My To-Hit, I should be able to increase back a bit with some potions of accuracy but to be honest it's not either of them that bothers me that much.

My AP regen is 13 (sob) minutes. Okay I've not completed Standing Stones or Totem so I can bring that down to 11.5 (I think) and I do I need to get onto that. That leads me to my main question and I'm pretty sure the answer is no but I've missed lots of new things (Genomes make my head hurt)and may as well ask. Is there any other way to reduce my AP regen delay? Any potions/items etc? I know hats give a bonus but is there anything more permanent? As I recall the lowest possible was around the 8 min mark which would be quite a bit nicer indeed thank you very much! :)

The second, less important question, when the permanent effects of Frostbite were removed (hurrah) was there anyway for characters damaged to undo that damage?

Cheers! Douro 04:51, 18 April 2009 (BST)

For AP regen, the UAA will get you another 30 seconds. (It will also drive you mad, but that's beside the point). Aside from that, nothing I know of--doing all the quests will now take you down to 7 minutes in theory, but if you've gotten apregen penalties (from dragon blood etc.) there's not really any way to undo that. As for frostbite, I don't think there was anything frostbite-specific...just the normal ways to increase maxHP/maxAP. (But if you haven't done Standing Stones, Totems, or UAA, those in themselves will give you a lot of max AP.)--Dragon 05:50, 18 April 2009 (BST)
Wish we could do more to help; it's good to see you, Douro, wasn't aware you were still around. If Douro is your 'main,' what's your auxiliary? If'n you don't mind I ask. S. Mackie 02:11, 19 April 2009 (BST)
I've got a couple of lower levels to faff around with. DJB and Lor, neither of whom have done anything much really. I park them on Holiday island or Wizards retreat, work up a few thousand AP and have a bit of a blowout. Douro 13:39, 19 April 2009 (BST)
Binge and purge is a common Cities strategy. :) S. Mackie 17:30, 19 April 2009 (BST)

A way to cheat The Vents

I don't know if this would work or not but.. I was in The Vents for ages and I missed the once a week log-in to move sqaures and got sent to Limbo so.. I went to the transport tile and teleported back to The Vaults, but..

what if I would have gone to the teleport tile and sat on a magic carpet and then teleported ten cheaters to the tile I'm on in The Vents (which is two tiles away from the altar)?

Could this be a way for people to take advantage? That would suck ass because I've been in there for AGES 7of9 20:55, 11 April 2009 (BST)

Certainly a fascinating premise. I can't help you find out, but with GL permission, I might be able to advise somebody who can. S. Mackie 22:45, 11 April 2009 (BST)
There's an altar in the Vaults? Do you actually mean The Vents by any chance? --Naimoigiant 00:02, 12 April 2009 (BST)
Teleporting only takes you. It doesn't take anyone on your transport. --Dragon 03:47, 12 April 2009 (BST)

Scouter

I've been experimenting with my Scouter, walking around with it on, and I've noticed that when I look at fellow players, there's a number (in hideous colours) next to their names. Anyone have any idea how this applies to Cities? No, I haven't met anyone with more than 9000! next their name yet. Dendrast 02:10, 7 April 2009 (BST)

Try the Scouter page here on the wiki. :P -Scrumbucket 03:29, 7 April 2009 (BST)
Oh, mana. Not much use to a Master Armourer then. Dendrast 02:32, 9 April 2009 (BST)

That was a little surreal

You attack the Iron Hen.
Buc-awwk? Clang!
You cause 0 points of damage, and receive 0 experience. Your Sheaf of Wheat has worn out.
You lose a Sheaf of Wheat.
Whirrr.. Cluck!
Callisto attacks the Iron Hen for 60 damage. You slay the Iron Hen.
You add the trophy to your case!

I was in it for the trophy, really. S. Mackie 07:13, 2 April 2009 (BST)

Rickrolled?

Mrh?

I go away for a few weeks and this is what I come back to? I've searched through the wiki and haven't seen any mention of Rick Astley, rickrolling or getting rickroll'd. Granted, it's early in the morning and I haven't had coffee so I could have missed something... I can only assume this is April 1st related!

Racing Bling Weirdness

Intriguing - While trying to assemble Pimp-Military, the Racing Bling put even a smaller number of Pimp points into the primary slot despite overwhelming Military points against it. Wearing a Lucky Ring-Pull (pimp bling) without the Racing Bling returned the mathematics of the situation to normal. S. Mackie 08:52, 15 March 2009 (GMT)

Lame

I logged into an alt account today. Saw this had happened in the past 48 hours or so:

You are a bit hot.
Duke Renoir MD pushes you!
You are taken North.

You are forced to drink from your water skin. 96% remaining.
Duke Renoir MD pushes you!
(repeat 10 or so times)
You are forced to drink from your water skin. 78% remaining.
Duke Renoir MD pushes you!
You go North.
(etc)

I was just chilling at the trading post in Brighthelm. Kind of a lame thing to do to a character that's an Earl because I could have presumably died or had an especially difficult time getting the heck out of there. Maybe even lost AP due to the sands.

Not a problem for me. I just wanted to call Renoir out on charges of dickery and mention the fact that brooms can potentially lead to your quasi-death. Presumably this happens with frostbite as well. --Ade 21:00, 25 February 2009 (GMT)

Wait, I've heard of this sport. Moving a nobleman using a broom... isn't that cEarling? --Greycat 23:10, 25 February 2009 (GMT)

AP to gold rate?

Is there a typical gold charge for AP when commissioning the services of an armourer, mage or Order of the Club mercenary type? -- Rhapsodie 08:10, 29 January 2009 (GMT)

The Hammered_Anvil_Society has a published rate of 30gp/ap (plus any necessary materials). I've seen individual mages use this number as a basis for their charges, and add in an additional charge for mana (which at the time was something like 1000gp/mana, but is probably much cheaper now due to the prevalence of Wizards). --Dragon 08:27, 29 January 2009 (GMT)
The OOTC is extremely flexible on our rates. Typically, we're very open to negotiation -- Belkar 02:55, 30 January 2009 (GMT)
Yeah, my bad: the 1000GP rate on mana was the result of me basing my numbers on a terribly flawed bit of intelligence re: the pricing of AP. Actual price ended up being about a quarter of that, though I must admit I've been a bit inflexible as far as going below 240 GP/mana. S. Mackie 01:06, 31 January 2009 (GMT)
Cheers, good to know! :) -- Rhapsodie 22:04, 30 January 2009 (GMT)

Suggested a Totally Rad Game to a Totally Rad Show

Anyone from the States or Canada remember TechTV? Before it was taken over and destroyed by G4 (the bastards)? A bunch of TechTV folks rounded themselves up and formed a new company, Revision3. They essentially provide video podcasts for the same audience that viewed TechTV. A particular show that I regularly watch, called The Totally Rad Show is dedicated to reviewing movies, games, occasionally comics and some other assorted bits. Last week they asked viewers to send in links to great freeware games so they can be reviewed and discussed on the show.

I suggested Cities. While it might not make it to the show, I figured if it was I'd help our community grow. If any other players who also watch TRS, shoot them off an email. It couldn't hurt.

For the curious with about 40 minutes to burn: http://revision3.com/trs/ --Ade 11:49, 5 January 2009 (GMT)

Totally taxed (and peeved)

So I make it all the way around the Taxing Cellar up until the square before Ultimate Altar of Earth which according to the wiki was no item required (I've just edited it to change it to ?). But I couldn't pass so couldn't worship at the UAE (cry), so presumably an item was required. I see there's been a bit of editing of this square on the Taxing Cellar wiki page - does the item (or lack of item) change from player to player? Herbacious 16:19, 28 December 2008 (GMT)

If I'm not wrong it was Scrumbucket who changed it to "nothing required". What is actually required is the item "nothing", which can be bought at one of the markets for a hefty price. Some player discovered that sometime earlier, I believe. Corellis 01:19, 28 December 2008 (GMT)
I might be responsible for some of this confusion. When I ran the cellar, that square read 'nothing!' (as in 'no item'). I couldn't pass it, so I assumed it meant the item 'nothing' & changed the wiki accordingly. I think some players had trouble passing even with that item, so who knows what's going on. Gonzometro 02:41, 29 December 2008 (GMT)
Yes, I was the one that changed it to "nothing required". I actually went back and forth over that path several times to double-check and never lost anything. The discussion page implies that some players couldn't pass at all though, so maybe there's something weird with that path? Sorry about the confusion! Getting stopped at the very last square--that royally sucks. Let me know when you're ready to make another run, maybe I can help you out with some of the items you need?

-Scrumbucket 05:11, 29 December 2008 (GMT)

Once you worship at the altar you get free-ish movement. (You still get taxed if you have the item, but don't if you don't.) If you had already worshiped at that point, going back and forth doesn't tell you anything. Did you come from that direction the first time? If so, you would have lost an item then. --Dragon 05:43, 29 December 2008 (GMT)
Ah yes, that would be it. I was going by the info on the UAE page which says worshipping does not grant free access. I thought following another path (and losing a bottle of rum) would be enough to confirm that, but I never considered the possibility of partial access. Can someone who has personally confirmed the partial access theory edit the page? -Scrumbucket 09:05, 29 December 2008 (GMT)
Ah well - nothing comes from nothing. I'll give it another try sometime, once I've built up my resources and acquired some more rum (looks like a safer option). Herbacious 19:50, 29 December 2008 (GMT)
Rum usually is a safer option. That's a valuable life lesson which Cities taught me. Scary Mike 18:37, 2 Jan 2009 (GMT)

Bridge Network is now fully collapsed

Howdy folks. The bridge network between the islands has either almost fully, or completely collapsed. I'm not sure if anyone is interested in reestablishing it, but I figured I'd post and let any folks who may have AP to burn and a kind heart.

I restored the link between Bentnob and Bombadier Island, as I had to go there for the ancient castle anyway. After I see Weyland I'll see if I have enough wood to link up some others as well. --Ade 02:32, 19 December 2008 (GMT)

I thought about creating an order of flying engineers. Would there be any volunters other than me ?--Solune 18:38, 28 December 2008 (GMT)
I'm a Tubthumper first and a Cultist second. Third, I'm on hold in case there's ever a society of magic which needs a coat of arms and a hand at pricing. Between that and a few quests very much needing me to complete 'em, I guess I'm booked. Need wood? S. Mackie 01:09, 29 December 2008 (GMT)
I cleaned up the Bridge Maintenance page, since no one had updated it in at least six months. You may want to maintain bridges next time you cross them so we have a known update time for the page. -- Thog 22:24, 29 December 2008 (GMT)

Where to Use the Kitties?

If'n you're a wizard, it sometimes takes less energy to maintain a pet and let it do half your fighting. For most purposes, a Kat seems to serve me well. However, 100 damage is a fairly hard cap, suitable for many monsters but still limited in its utility.
If a Big Kat was roughly all you had going for you, either due to low damage or low accuracy, where would you want to go on long, boring walks fighting monsters to get optimal benefit from such a creature? S. Mackie 23:47, 6 December 2008 (GMT)

The interior comes to mind. Reasonable HP amounts, and you can even get some Hard Knock items into the equation -- Thog 21:32, 7 December 2008 (GMT)
The mimics and Tars in the dessert have about the right number of hit points too I find... ford_prefect 08:19, 8 December 2008 (GMT)
Maybe Dragon Island; most critters float around 200-400HP, which at least means you're "wasting" less damage. (Just break out the big guns for the big dragons, or else ignore them.) I'm not entirely certain if their loot/HP ratio is better or worse than the interior or desert, though. PotatoEngineer 00:33, 9 December 2008 (GMT)

Invasion! (and Spring Cleaning)

After years of sending lone scouts, the main fleet has arrived. They're here! Run for your lives!

In other news, it's that time of year again. Space is ridiculously cluttered with small bits of asteroid, mostly water- and air-aligned. I've done what I can to clean up, but it's a losing proposition.

I understand farming asteroids for power crystals and not wanting to trudge through the rest of them once the crystal is found. I understand that some people just don't care that they're making a mess and can't look ahead far enough to realize they're making it harder for new power crystals to spawn.

What I don't understand is this: If you're only looking for power crystals, why make it hard on yourself? Find yourself a fresh asteroid and open a can of worms. Presto! You only have to worry about a single asteroid, none of this chasing bits of spinning rock through space. Out of worms? I'll give them to you free of charge! I just ask that you break a huge fire cracker afterwards to scare the worms away. I'll give you the crackers too if you need them. Yeah it's 6 AP, but that's still much cheaper than chasing asteroids down the hard way. Think about it. -Scrumbucket 23:57, 23 November 2008 (GMT)

On a side note, you don't have to use huge fire crackers all the time. Just normal ones will do - I only use huge fire crackers when the normal ones don't work the first time. --Corellis 23:05, 3 December 2008 (EST)

Aargh! I just went to space and it was almost 50% worms! Where there weren't worms, there were bits of broken asteroid (mostly water-aligned). I spent more than a dozen huge fire crackers and all my AP just cleaning the damn place up - and I didn't get through all of it by any means. These rants about keeping space clean happen all the time (see here and here and here and here and here) but sign me up for another one! If you're going to use worms, clean up your mess! -- Rhapsodie 09:56, 20 January 2009 (GMT)

Status?

How's everyone doing, IRL? Here in the US, the economy is in the tank. Unemployment is high, people are losing their homes, jobs, etc. -- How is everyone on here holding up?

My lady wife had her hours cut back, but we're both still employed. Syagrius 01:58, 21 November 2008 (GMT)

I'm still employed, and there's a long line of contractors who will be let go before they get around to me. Yes, I am very, very much counting my blessings here. PotatoEngineer 05:05, 21 November 2008 (GMT)
Stressed. Been sick since half a week before election day, which is a major workday at my place of employment. I guess that means I've been sick for roughly twenty days. A visit to the doctor would be approximately 10% of my annual income, and I'm pretty sure I know what they'd say. Last time I had these symptoms, you see, it turned out to be viral rather than bacterial.
I've been applying for disability services over the course of the last several months, and two months ago I was told I'd have a case worker assigned... within the month. It finally happened this week. This is an excellent step, but it took far longer than intended, expected, or even is reasonable. So that's another stressor.
Also lost my copy of War of the Worlds in the middle of reading it for only my second time. Thank goodness for Project Gutenburg, but I wanted it in hard copy! S. Mackie 07:36, 21 November 2008 (GMT)
Health care here in the States is a real pickle. You're not alone Macksting; my mom is in the same boat as you except with a chronic condition that doesn't qualify for disability. Some employers are waiting for the government to take over paying for health care, so they can dump the financial burden. They'd much rather pay a straight, if higher, wage and let people pay it to the feds as income tax. No doubt it gets worse before it gets better. --Tiltowait 14:02, 21 November 2008 (GMT)
I've been hearing about people losing their jobs. A-B's headquarters are here in town and they've been slashing. Be glad you don't work there. My employer is reducing head count through contractors first. I hired a kid just out of college earlier this summer as a part of an internal rotational program. Somebody retired and I thought I'd be able to keep him, but it's not working out that way. I got caught up in the internet bubble bursting in the early 2000s and been laid off then, but nothing so far this time around.
One of the homes in our neighborhood is in foreclosure. Lots of people are trying to sell homes, and they've all been on the market a very long time. Over the summer, a bank summarily closed a HELOC (Home Equity Line Of Credit) we keep; the reason sited ostensibly was declining home prices. So we paid off the balance and closed it early because we'd been planning to anyway. Funny thing is, this year the county raised the assessed valuation on our house by about 5%; so if home prices really are lower somebody forgot to tell the government ;)
My wife & I plan to hunker down. Avoid large purchases. Only hold the main mortgage on our house. Keep our cars for a few more years. Make sure we aren't carrying any other debt like credit cards. As long as I stay employed, we can ride it out. --Tiltowait 13:44, 21 November 2008 (GMT)
In France we are so used to complaining that it doesn't feel different than usual. Teachers are in the middle of their traditional november strike. So are the railways and airlines. I've freezed some of my shopping, but that's because I'm expecting a good sales season after holidays--Solune 16:58, 21 November 2008 (GMT)
So far, Australia seems to be doing OK. We had bank regulation so our internal housing isn't suffering from high risk mortgages but we are feeling it from everywhere else. Overseas travel except to countries whose dollar has also fallen as far as ours is probably out :). There's some debate about whether we can keep the country from recession and the government is spending the budget surplus bigtime to try and keep the economy moving. We're starting to see some job losses etc but nothing on the scale thats happening in the US. Oh, and we have universal health care so that makes me feel a lot more secure are that type of thing. Sorry its so crap for you S. Mackie. Phw 20:15, 21 November 2008 (GMT)
Thanks for the thoughts. My mum moved to Australia a year ago, so I imagine she's doing much better in some ways, but she's not a citizen. Says the paperwork and process would all be a bit much. S. Mackie 10:13, 22 November 2008 (GMT)
No problems. Aus doesn't give much of a rats if you're a citizen or not, so she'll be going ok. It only matters if you want to get a job with the government, etc. Phw 06:27, 24 November 2008 (GMT)
I was looking for work even before the collapse so I can't blame it on the economy. I am a bit worried about my prospects however--I work in the non-profit sector and it's only a matter of time before funding starts drying up. On the other hand, this whole mess is exactly the sort of thing organizers have been trying to prevent, so maybe people will see that and... Isn't wishful thinking wonderful? :) -Scrumbucket 22:23, 21 November 2008 (GMT)
Living in New England, US. We're doing fairly okay. The missus scored a nice, secure job earlier in the year. It's likely not something that can be downsized or go bankrupt. She's a federal auditor, there's a bit of a demand for those lately. I'm employed in the real estate industry, which isn't doing too great. I'm also part time employed in retail. My employer is weathering the storm, even though it's biggest competitor, Linens-n-things went belly up. We're still paying off our debt, but we're closer to zeroing out everything. We're doing better than this time last year. --Ade 00:16, 22 November 2008 (GMT)
