The Sneaky Order of Hat Thieves
Purpose
Lets face it, hats are cool. Everyone wants one. Even the stupid little paper hats you get from Christmas crackers. Sometimes though, you come across a hat that you can't steal. Maybe you've already got a hat. Maybe the hat is only good for discounts and you don't need to buy anything. Maybe you're on a boat in the middle of the ocean and you can't disembark and use your grappling hook. In the past you would say, "SHT, why do I always find hats I can't use!" Now there's a solution, the Sneaky Order of Hat Thieves (SHT). The SHT provides a place for hat finders and hat wanters to come together to effectively steal what should be rightfully yours.
How Does It work
People who want a hat make posts detailing what kind of hat they want and what they are willing to offer to the person who enables them to get it. You'll probably want to note if you have a grappling hook for oceanic thievery, and generally what times you are active. Given the speed at which hats generally run around, you will probably have to be summonable.
When someone finds a hat they can't (or don't) want to steal, they can check the postings to find the offer that suits them the best and the scores page to find out who's active.
Example
Here's an actual exchange when I found a wizard's hat I couldn't steal. (Copied from the Conversation page)
I'm next to a boat containing a Wizard's hat. If you have a grappling hook, I will summon you here and you can steal it (This is preferred). If not, we are close to brighthelm and I can summon you there to buy one first. Any takers? Hendsch 13:23, 5 May 2006 (BST)
Hello, Ill take you up on that offer, most kind of you. Ill need the brighthelm summon to buy a hook though. Ta Zombie 13:38, 5 May 2006 (BST)
Okay, I'll do that. I'm going to summon you to the end of the pier. You'll have to head up to the Navel Gazing shop (I believe its north to the start of the pier and then one square east) to buy the hook. Then meet me back at the end of the pier. We'll crawl along with the hook (I'll Move one space into water, you'll grapple over, then I'll move again, and you grapple again). It's only two squares out. Hendsch 13:44, 5 May 2006 (BST)
Cool, nice one. Im there. Lets grapple! Zombie 13:57, 5 May 2006 (BST)
That worked rather well. Hendsch 14:09, 5 May 2006 (BST)
FAQ
Q:What happens if I help someone get a hat and they don't deliver the goods they promised or what if we pay for a hat that we are never given?
A:Let's face it, sneaky hat thieves are, well, sneaky. At the moment, we will use the honor system and report the player as a bad trader on this page. For negotiations that are not too time sensitive (i.e. you are selling your own hat), we recommend a neutral 3rd party be used to hold the goods for trade prior to the hat being exchanged. If bad trades become a significant problem I will find a player who only wants to stand at a trading post and serve as a permanently accessible 3rd party for exchanges (no, no, it's not a mule, just a player who doesn't ever want to leave the trading post). If someone else wanted to do this, that would be great.
Q:If it's the Sneaky Order of Hat Thieves, why is the acronym SHT? What happened to the 'O'?
A: TRICKY words have SILENT letters, SNEAKY acronyms have INVISIBLE letters.
Hey Give Me a Hat
OK, I want Ludwig Vega's crown, if it's still atop his head. If for no other reason than to avenge Tabitah R'al. If you see it, please summon me. -- Sertularian 16:37, 5 May 2006 (BST)
- It appears that e.bstan has already taken the crown from Ludwig (of course Ludwig took it from e.bstan)? Hendsch 16:49, 5 May 2006 (BST)
