Sickle Baton

Sickle baton.... whos next in line? Eyepeel 18:01, 1 March 2006 (GMT)

Qualifications:

  • Cannot sell it.
  • Must pass it on when done
  • No fighting monsters with it.
  • It would be a bonus if you would co-op at the TP 4E 2S and be a cabinet for a bit...

Procedure: It worked for us...

  • Grab a new cities herb buddy or 2 (post here to team up)
  • We only had 1 sickle between 3 of us, one person would forage like crazy and pass off the herbs they found that a buddy needed and then pass off the sickle when short on AP
  • repete!
  • as of 3/10 i'm not sure if herman takes all your unidentified herbs (see below) but he did when we did the quest... a buddy was key to hand off extras to.

Sickle Baton Order

I'm putting the sickle up for market after two months of waiting for someone to ask for it. It will be available at the Southern Market in the next few days. Thank you to the group for putting together a great service, and if there's anything I can do to help out those that shared the sickle and info with me, please get in touch. (Billz8) 207.63.110.36 21:06, 23 May 2006 (BST)

I see a Sickle for 150k... 'nuff said, if that was the one used. Snarfer 10:46, 13 September 2006 (BST)
Although the quest appears to have eased up a bit in difficulty, the scythe is still handy. I'm willing to lend mine to the needy. (If, inexplicably, the need to set up a baton order arises, I'll just donate it to the cause and make another.) macksting 07:04, 26 September 2006 (BST)

  • a Sprig of Oregano
  • a Sprig of Rosemary

I've finished!!! I'm now back down south, currently digging for apple pips in the
Great Desert. I passed on my trusty sickle to eyepeel, who will in turn pass it on
to somebody else once he finishes. Please do the same should it end up in your hands
- selling it at the market would most certainly not be in the spirirt of things and
will result in a dissing from previous owners! Chad

UPDATE: I believe this has been recoded so that Herman will only remove duplicate herbs when you drop by. It makes the whole quest more fun.Caroline 18:48, 28 February 2006 (GMT)

  • Herman did have a brief lapse but he's now back to his old thieving ways :( Chad 19:50, 28 February 2006 (GMT)
I little disagreement between the admins going on... Elseware 22:29, 28 February 2006 (GMT)
Whilst this quest is a major ballache at first, it has caused a lot of players to band together on IRC and at the nearest TP and form a swapping group. I've not seen another quest yet that's generated so much player co-operation. I've even ended up "say"ing and shouting to nearby users to come and join in! The 1AP cost of "say" doesn't promote discussion via that method, but I can see both sides of that argument. I imagine there are a large percentage of players who don't read the wiki though, perhaps we need a paved square nearby with a chalked message pointing people to this page? Chad 07:12, 1 March 2006 (GMT)

OK, so foraging is pretty AP intensive, worsened by the fact that Herman will steal all your unidentified Herbs and then ask from them again later :(

To counter this, some foragers have been putting their unwanted Herbs up on the market for a few GP. This is a great idea but has a couple of drawbacks:

  • Some unscrupulous users are buying them and putting them back up for silly money
  • The nearest market (Western) is 23 steps away, so a round trip from the cave plus a bit of buying and selling is going to cost you around 50AP - over 5 hrs worth for most players.

The best answer might be...

I appreciate that whichever twisted admin wrote this quest wants to put players through the wringer, and I admire tha fact that players are banding together here to "beat" this quest (basically to fix up the fact that it's broken). But there's a much easier answer to this problem: Go to a general store and buy a bag. Put all your "spare" herbs in that bag and they won't show up in your inventory. Herman therefore cannot nick them. Quest fixed.

Rich 16:35, 9 March 2006 (GMT)

That'll be this twisted admin. The quest isn't broken - it was designed to encourage the players to band together, which they're doing quite happily. Nick 17:23, 9 March 2006 (GMT)
As one of the early foragers, here's my tuppence: Chad 18:37, 9 March 2006 (GMT)
  • 1. Bags weren't implemented when this quest appeared
  • 2. Admin were aware of the bag issue early on when I discussed that I managed to use a corpse as a bag :-)
  • 3. Those of us that banded together to crack this quest now regularly "meet up" and have a good natter on IRC. Isn't making new friends better than going it alone? It's not too hard to organise a swapping group!
amen chad -Eyepeel 01:45, 11 March 2006 (GMT)
The admins have "fixed" bags -- you can no longer put herbs in bags. BlaisedeC 02:30, 20 April 2006 (BST)

Here's another possibility:

There's a Trading Post at 58N 19E, that's just 2S and 4E of the cave - only 6AP away. I suggest we get a group of us together and work as a team. Constantly swapping everything back and forward will still cost a fair bit of AP, so how about we have a designated "Herb Keeper" who sits at the TP and everyone passes their unwanted Herbs onto them.

Anyone who needs a Herb which the Keeper has can be given it and then go and see Herman. Team members would still forage, and further unwanted Herbs should be passed to the Keeper. Once one of the team has submitted, say, 5 herbs to Herman, then they become the keeper which gives the previous guy a chance to submit some herbs. Or maybe we should change over after a designated time period? Or just have some sort of rota?

To stop the system being abused, perhaps we should make it 1 herb in, 1 herb out. If one person gets stuck on finding a particular herb then maybe the whole team could forage in the appropriate terrain type to increase the chances of finding it.

Obviously Timezones will come into play here, there's no point in a Keeper being active when the rest of the team are asleep! So how about any interested parties signing up below, with their active hours listed (in game time) so we can work out when the best swapping window is?

Perhaps we could also swap sickles, and exchange skills on sharpening etc to get the best out of our AP too.

Further suggestions/ideas/discussion is welcomed. Chad 13:22, 26 February 2006 (GMT)

Not a bad idea - try to bust out this quest - i'd be willing to sit at the TP for a coupla days, maybe i could borrow a sickle afterwards. Eyepeel 14:39, 26 February 2006 (GMT)

Herb chat

  • Hey fellow foragers, looks like some "Herman's apprentices" are dropping by at the Market and selling unwanted herbs for a very cheap price!! It could be a way of not losing your unwanted herbs when submitting your requested herb to the hermit. But please... Don't buy all of them and leave it to other "apprentices" who need that particular herb to complete their quest. remember - BUY ONLY WHAT YOU NEED!!
  • 5000GP isn't exactly cheap :( Chad 12:53, 22 February 2006 (GMT)
i know but somone bought all the ones i put in the market at 1g Doc S
Perhaps a few of us could team up at the nearest trading post to Herman...? Chad
I'm hanging out there now, actually. I'm seeing if I can do this with trading or if I should abandon this AP sink. I've just spent 130 AP, but if I get the one herb I want my work vanishes. :-|(On second thought the market might be the way to go for this, so I'm headed down there JohnnyRogers 21:05, 24 February 2006 (GMT))
  • I'm just finishing off the stones then I might go back to foraging. I think the best way to go would be to find a nearby TP, hand over all the unneeded stuff to a buddy whilst you give Herman what he wants, then get back to the TP and get your stuff back (or just the next herb, or let your partner hand one in etc). The market is a bit of a hike from the cave. Chad 22:31, 24 February 2006 (GMT)
it's 23 steps from the market office to herman's hut, which is just under foraging twice with the golden sickle. yes, it would be better to have a buddy hang out with your stuff for a bit, and to trade back and forth that way, but the second best option is the market. palantir me when you get done with the stones. JohnnyRogers 00:57, 25 February 2006 (GMT)

note: You could do the same way as well to help others and to help you yourself to complete the quest. e.bstan 20:27, 16 February 2006 (GMT)

  • It looks like Herman is back to only taking the herb he currently needs (as opposed to all unidentified herbs) although it looks like he might be taking all duplicates of that herb that you currently have. I may be wrong about this but I could swear I had a few dupes before I finished up the quest, and now I have no herbs of any kind. At least I can pass on the Sickle, which is going to Sheyona first. Meet me at the trading post and I will pass it off. All other interested parties see the sickle baton below. zingus 06:33, 4 March 2006 (GMT)
