New Interface

From Cities

Jump to: navigation, search

I bet I can find 1,000,000 people who hate the new interface...

Actually, the reason is mostly to reduce load. Rendering the list of objects is about 25% of the load of generating a page. The catch is it has to work out all the modifiers and powers to get the to-hit and damage.

The old interface will remain indefinitely but the default will be changed to the new style in a few weeks.

To try the new interface, use the (revamped) preferences button on the bottom left.

Text Box

  • expand/shrink for the text box seems to be reversed for me? And I love the new inventory control; never much liked the old style, but could you offer the option to just list entire inventory alphabetically? So many times i know what item i want, but can't remember which category it sorts under, and have to check each cat. until i find it. AmishRobots 19:33, 26 September 2008 (BST)
Check at the end, theres an "all" category. --BortJr 22:35, 26 September 2008 (BST)

hmmm. it's a css thing. I set it to be fixed or variable, basically Elseware 13:29, 25 September 2008 (BST)

Havelock2, do you mean that when you click on 'expand' it shrinks, and vice versa? I've got that and I agree it's not the most intuitive language... --Zacharias 17:17, 25 September 2008 (BST)
  • When the message box is in 'fixed' mode, every time I use the inventory control my browser window scrolls down. In 'variable' mode it doesn't do this. --Beata 14:33, 25 September 2008 (BST)
  • The new left pane seems to ignore the width option in Preferences. --Beata 14:36, 25 September 2008 (BST)
  • Probably related to the prior issue, but once you change the item you're using, the left pane collapses to about a third of the page (rather than obeying the width option) -- Thog 15:03, 25 September 2008 (BST)
The width option sets the size of the text box that was displaying the text. Its now not a text box and thus doesn't have this setting available. It will continue to ignore it. Phw 22:59, 26 September 2008 (BST)

Repeated Actions

  • I love the Repeated Action Controls, now i can stop trying to get greasemonkey to work in seamonkey. But one thing i liked about PE's button masher was that I could watch as each repetition went by. Say if i'm walking somewhere kinda far, but not sure how many steps, i could set it for approximately what i think it takes, and then just stop it when i go to far. I guess I'm just being picky though; it's not like i can't still just use greasemonkey for little stuff like that (just means i have to use firefox though). Probably not worth your coding time to rework the whole code just to give another option for showing each step. beware the creature feeps! AmishRobots 19:27, 26 September 2008 (BST)
    • Showing each step would defeat Elseware's point in internalizing Button Masher - doing it all in one call to the server. Also, why not just use Button Masher when you need to see progress? -- Thog 20:47, 26 September 2008 (BST)
      • i guess you did not read the bit where i explain why i don't use button masher? Or I wasn't clear enough; my Seamonkey won't do Greasemonkey AmishRobots 02:51, 4 January 2009 (GMT)
      • Button masher seems to be on the list of "broken GM scripts", no idea why... --naath 12:50, 29 September 2008 (BST)
        • It's because PotatoConsole's default location is just under the Preferences box, which has been nixed in the latest release. It's an easy fix, I just need to find some more free time... On the other hand, if you had previously moved Button Masher (or the PotatoConsole) elsewhere in the interface, it might still work. PotatoEngineer 18:31, 29 September 2008 (BST)
          • It's also because it's broken, at least on my machine. "Broken", in the sense that "it runs and hides after the first in a set of repeated actions", anyway. -- Sertularian 00:03, 30 September 2008 (BST)
  • Repeated Action controls are under my pet list, can it be under the Name position? Payco
You might want to try the 'three column display' on the development page. Phw 22:59, 26 September 2008 (BST)
  • Use preferences-page to set default (not "1") repeatcount. I'd also suggest losing the extra weight of ap/hp stop, they're better in preferences too (not defaulting to 0 I guess). --Suchros 08:45, 4 October 2008 (BST)

Recently used

  • It's probably not necessary for "recently used" to appear again when you click "inventory" Dendrast 13:21, 27 September 2008 (BST) (BST)
  • Actually, I like it as is - that way, I can see the most recently used elements on the screen and ones which are slightly less recent in the dropdown (I only display 4 on the screen a la Merchants Guild rewards) -- Thog 22:28, 20 October 2008 (BST)

  • The inventory box has a variable width dependent on the size of the browser window, any way to control this? it gets rather wide on my screen. Perhaps move it over to the right a bit as well, so it doesn't cover up the message pane and whatnot.--LimeHan 18:02, 25 September 2008 (BST)
  • I like it. I'm an intuitive player, and it seems that it'll speed things up, which is fine by me. I like having my inventory in files. Mucho real kudos. However, I unequipped my field glasses and lost them. The only way I could get them back was by going back to the classic style and found them there. Dendrast 04:15, 26 September 2008 (BST)
Speaking of having to go back to 'classic', tonight I wanted to refine some iron ore to start a new weapon. I did, but inventory wouldn't give me my bits. Sooo... I went back to 'classic', started my weapon, which is there in classic, and still non-existant in the new style. What gives? Will I have to keep switching back and forth to do stuff? Dendrast 03:32, 9 October 2008 (BST)

FYI, Don't Break It is also broken, and will be fixed...sometime. --Dragon 19:01, 26 September 2008 (BST)
It broke a lot of GM scripts. The chief casualty was the inventory, which some disgusting percentage of my scripts reference at some point. It made getting the current item much easier, and getting the current inventory much harder. I know some script authors are only supporting the newfangled interface from here out; I know I'll be supporting both for Big Brother, but I'll evaluate the other scripts and see how much work it'll take to support both forms. PotatoEngineer 22:25, 26 September 2008 (BST)
Please consider this a request, nay a plea, for Button Masher in the Newfangled Interface. I like to stroll along, seeing the sights (read: "killing the livestock") as I go. -- Sertularian 23:58, 26 September 2008 (BST)
  • This is awesome! Thanks! Fraggle 12:55, 26 September 2008 (BST)
  • Can you give us a way to remove the blue bar at the top of the screen? I like the new interface, and know which one I'm using, thank you. density 00:39, 20 October 2008 (BST)

  • After using the Newfangled Interface for some time, some suggestions, comments, and complaints:
    1. Add a [QD] prompt to the currently wielded item, to add it to the Quickdraw list.
    2. Add [Equip] (or [Ride] or whatever the "equip" verb is) prompts to each equippable item in the inventory lists, to eliminate a step.
    3. Pressing the Enter key in the newfangled interface removes my Badge. AARGH.
    4. When I perform an action that creates a new item (e.g., dig up a Treasure Chest, purchase a Guild Pass), the resulting item is "somewhere in my inventory". It can be very hard to find in the newfangled interface.
    5. Pulling my inventory from the database in the newfangled interface seems orders of magnitude slower than the traditional way. The entire list is retrieved the old-fashioned way when I equip a bag, for example. When I click on the bag, equipping it (and its attendant list of things I might want to put into it) takes far less time than it took to retrieve just the "Junk" inventory list from which I selected the bag in the first place. I know this is Ajax and Ajax is keen, but why can't it retrieve the results of a simple SQL query anywhere near as fast as the old way?
    6. The two-step inventory method is getting really old for me. After using it for some time, I have not yet been able to (and it seems likely I never will) learn the difference between "Magic", "Handy", and "Junk". So I usually end up picking "All" anyway, which tends to defeat the purpose. That makes the first click-and-wait on the [Inventory] link, just to get to the Recent Items list (which is already displayed anyway), a complete waste of time.
I eagerly bit the bullet and converted to the Newfangled Interface when it came out. I have tried diligently to give it a fair shot. I really like the layout options, and in some ways it is certainly faster. But the inadequacies in the inventory system are making me seriously consider going back. -- Sertularian 17:14, 25 November 2008 (GMT)
  • Add a 'place at feet' item to pets in the inventory list. Phw 21:28, 6 November 2008 (GMT)
  • Make the "expanded" message box remain expanded until shrunk, please. Across screen loads. -Greycat 13:48, 25 September 2008 (BST)
    • good idea -- I'll make it a preference.
  • Perhaps combine "Using" and "Recently Used" in one section? And give both headers the same treatment as all the other title areas (i.e. bigger and bold)? As is, the labels and the items used tend to blend together -- Thog 14:57, 25 September 2008 (BST)
Seconded. I'd like to see the "inventory" button in that same section, so you only have one place to look for your current item, recently used items, inventory link, and (optionally) the quickdraw section. Splitting all four of those functions to different parts of the interface seems really counter-intuitive. PotatoEngineer 21:03, 27 September 2008 (BST)
  • Perhaps a link to empty a bag from the inventory box, instead of having to select it first? Maybe give it a "Are you sure?" dialogue box to help in case of mis-clicks.--LimeHan 17:56, 25 September 2008 (BST)

Reiterating this. Crafting anything in sequence is a major pain, especially since I'm not always sure what category things sort into. A pane for any newly acquired item would help greatly. Also, when you use the last of something (say, your Mysterious Envelope or Treasure Map), it'd be nice if instead of Fists you defaulted to whatever it yielded. I realize that's a more complicated fix (since I certainly wouldn't want assumptions to be made in some circumstances), but... it'd be nice. Schmendrick 09:27, 14 July 2010 (BST)
  • I'd like to see the item ID available somewhere on the page. It's almost available from the wiki-link, except that I can't tell the difference between unique items, which are all Bag or CustomWeapon or some such (as opposed to Bag.3525 and Bag.78264). The "name" attribute on the wiki-link would work just fine for this sort of thing. PotatoEngineer 05:07, 20 October 2008 (BST)

The markets quest is basically dead now. Anyone can have quickdraw items with the new interface regardless of market sales. I'm not sure if there's a limit, but I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't (and if there is, it's a global limit unrelated to market sales). --Dragon 02:04, 24 October 2008 (BST)
  • Would like to see the background change color based on time (or possibly location, for underground etc.) I'm in GMT-0500 and keeping track of you Brits is still not intuitive. Have a text box to type in partial item names and have it search for them in your inventory - I've been using the "Item Selector" GM script for this, so I can type in any part of the name ("pelt") for instance and get at it. I'm bad at remembering where things go (for a while I had my stuff bagged by inventory type and could never find anything) and what their full names are; and I'm not a big fan of clicking lots. --naath 13:44, 25 September 2008 (BST)

hmm, i used to be able to just keystroke my way through the old drop down inventory style. i was hoping i could do ctrl+f just on the new inv pane, but, not so much apparently. a "search" tab right next to the "all" option would be quite nice, yes. perhaps if it were a separate page somehow (i really have no idea what that pane is now) i could then throw it in a sidebar. Of course resizable frames might be nice too, everybody likes the <frame> tag--AmishRobots
I regularly do ctrl+f on the new inventory pane, and have had no problems with it. Well, actually I use search-as-you-type, but same difference. Oh, and in case you weren't aware - focused links can be followed with <enter>, and at least firefox has two search modes - for everything or just links. Incen

Perhaps you could have the last used items on the screen somewhere, without having to click on the inventory button. Don't know that there is room for either of those things, really.
