As books are of no (known, yet) use to the holder once they have been read, a number of altruistic individuals have contributed their tomes to the library. Complete collections are held in several Book Bags, which are available to borrow on the understanding that they be returned whole. One individual is deemed the librarian, responsible for handing out Bags to those who wish to further their learning, and to whom they should ultimately be returned.

Initiated by Eyepeel: Harrah for literacy. Eyepeel 22:37, 2 March 2006 (GMT)

Windy City is the centre of learning and culture.

'King Elseware has kindly provided us with a Park Bench to chat and swap books at 8E 5N. There is also a Memorial Library at 8E 6N which allows you to read books for half the usual amount of AP. Caroline 14:06, 5 April 2006 (BST)

As well as these locations, the parties which from time to time are held around the 'Kingdom, being de facto trading places are also good for some book swapping action, and you're as likely to find the current Librarian there as anywhere. As they are busy places though, you may be better off using a Palantir to talk to the Librarian to avoid your request getting lost among the myriad comments in the air at the party.

WARNING - of late, there have been a number of occurrences of "The Party Trading Bug" where an item is given but not received, hence entirely lost. Quiet trading posts are to be preferred.

Please ensure that you have adequate AP to read and return a bookbag in a reasonable amount of time before requesting one.

Feel entirely at liberty to leave a present for the librarian in a bookbag when you return it if you think they have provided a good service :)

  • Acknowledgement to Snare for pioneering this excellent tradition.

Book Bag contents

The book bags contain Battlefield Earth, all 32 Heinlein paperbacks, a Copy of The Citizen (the Cities newspaper, which confusingly sorts in among the Heinlein books), a Norse/English Dictionary, the 5 Martial Arts books and a Pair of Reading Glasses. Each also contains a memo to help us find lost bookbags. Please check on return that all 43 items are there on return.

Book Bag requests

If you have a hankering for a good read, add yourself to this list - if you're in a hurry, or you don't get a response as quickly as you'd like, you might try sending WikiMail to the current Librarian. Please put the newest messages at the top

Current Librarian: Jmb - to request bags please add a comment below, or failing that to jmb, or palantir me.
Alberta is also acting as Librarian's assistant, and when idle frequents the Park Bench. Bookbags may be returned to her there.
  • Any new requests? Haven't heard from anyone in a good long while.
  • Back in business after the 2012 restart! several book bags are still missing, so any spares are welcome to build up new bags.

Stale requests

The following people have contacted me about bookbags, but we've subsequently lost contact. If you're listed here and still interested, please move your name to the section above.

  • I've removed all the stale requests - they date before 2009...

Recent Readers

Recent satisfied (I hope) book club members. Hopefully keeping names here for a little while will (a) show that the club's active and (b) avoid me trying to remind people who've already returned stuff

Book Swap Memories

Zingus and Eyepeel both thought we'd break out this little snapshot. Cherish it always.

There was a huge Duke party at the Park Bench to honor the occasion of e.bstan's birthday, on March 22, 2006.
