Carving out a guild

Okay, so I've got some supplies, I've resigned from my old guild, gotten some supplies to build a new one (thank you Syagrius and to Sertularian for helping to dig up bones!) and bought my new permit. I establish the guild in a favorable spot, go down into it and begin digging. After a few cuts of stone, I get no message at all, but the AP disappears. I burn through a few hundred AP and can't manage to clear a single bit of rock. Maybe it's a bug, so I resign from this guild, get another permit and open a second one. Same thing. I've tried digging using misril blings or without them, I've tried using weapons, bare hands, a spade and even the piece of guild terrain I want to put there, all to no avail. That's...odd. I just tried cutting through guildspace, and it worked fine. What type of square are you trying to cut into? (You may need a glowing item to see it.) If you don't mind sharing the guild location, could you say where it is so we can try there? Can you try cutting through guildspace in someone else's guild, just to be sure you can? (Incidentally, Misril Blings, spades, etc. will change the AP cost, but shouldn't change whether or not you can cut through.) --Dragon 23:40, 16 May 2010 (BST)

The squares I'm trying are stones (at least that's what I get for the first couple cuts) when cutting them, for some reason my browser doesn't label any underground terrain for me). Guildspace is separate from the Underground; they shouldn't interfere.
Just tried cutting a space out in Ratatoskr's Burrow and managed to clear the spot rather quickly. It's also worth noting that I have tried cutting with Jon as well as both alts - Aazamon and Wyrd - and had the same problem -Jon 15:42, 17 May 2010 (BST)
I wonder if the location might be the issue. Where was your first attempt? Most of the guilds posted on Guilds are within the main area, and it's suggestive that the Forbidden Guild is apparently separated from the Stonecutters "by a void". Puff and I went to check it out. With some glowing bling, this is what we found:
That...looks buggy. (It doesn't look like a "void" though.) Maybe there was a cave-in and the guild entrance is over top of it? Maybe there's something special about the 0W location? Oh, I should mention that two of the Tunnel squares were there when I got there. The other two were Rock. I tried to cut them (and did so, successfully) but it didn't get rid of the paths. After the rock had been cut away, the "cut" action doesn't do anything but waste AP, as reported above. --Dragon 00:48, 20 May 2010 (BST)

Changing careers

With apologies up front if my search-fu was just not strong enough, but I've been unable to locate any certain answer on this. If I've got a knight who goes armorer or wizardly, then back to knight, then wants to go back to armoring or wizarding, must he complete the initial quests for those classes again? I'm familiar with the registry to return to knighthood, just unsure about returning to the other two. Thanks! -Jon 17:54, 29 March 2010 (BST)

You don't have to start again, no; I think you still need a XXXX to switch back to being a mage, and to find the Ancient Castle to switch to an armourer, but you carry on from where you were when you switched away. Andrewsi 19:09, 29 March 2010 (BST)

Damage Absorbtion Stacking: Corellis

I am slaying phoenixes right now, and it would appear that armour, damage reduction through spells and the iron bling do not stack. Armour appears to stack with damage reduction through spells, but all 3 sources of damage reduction do not work when used together. Can anyone else confirm this?

You'll Grow Into It: Dragon

I've a very large variety of dwagon. Yesterday evening, it hit 8 weeks, so I can no longer unequip it and hope to reequip it in the foreseeable future*. As of now, the deequip button says "Stop Riding."
The trouble is, GL Andrew says it is actually possible for a transport to have a Movemod rather than a TransportMoveMod, and due to his gargantuan nature Ammaud's modifier in either case would be 0.
We know with a fair degree of certainty that TransportMoveMod isn't in effect because equipping Winged Boots is still helpful to me**, but we can't rule out other scenarios. We also don't know whether or not Ammaud, given his circumstances, counts as being ridden by the game.
Question 1: Does a dwagon override equipment as a transport, or do things like winged boots actually modify its movement?
Question 2: If a dwagon (or any pet transport) growing up in inventory does not affect movement until unequipped and reequipped as ridden, how would I go about documenting this as a feature of the game?

* ...although it's a pleasant coincidence that the only GL to come close to a commitment to expand our pet footprint via quest is also the only GL currently programming in the game.
** And thank goodness for that or I'm not sure I'd have the strength to keep training him.

Addendum: So, on consideration, we know at least two tumblers are in place. It's a pet transport, no doubt about it. Is it acting as a pet transport for movement purposes? Make a Super 'King Menthol from a Fag and a Sprig of Mint.

Frost Castle

There aren't any specific quests, if that's what you're asking. It's a place to visit, and it's the only place to find Frost Giants (which drop Ice weapons), but that's about it. --Dragon 02:10, 23 May 2009 (BST)

Dragon Information

There was a bug, it has been fixed. Could all pets of dragons please check their owner's Alignment and note changes on Pet_Dragon. I believe this change will not have affected many dragons, but please do check. (In bonus news we have very nearly all of the dragon DNA sorted out) --naath 17:16, 6 April 2009 (BST)

Preventing Snowballs Melting

I am almost finished putting together a totems collection for my wizard and she was about to set off to get a huge snowball - but then it dawned on me that it might melt before she gets to use it. Can you keep snowballs frozen by putting them in bags? -- Rhapsodie 10:45, 17 February 2009 (GMT)

Bag it! ....or Wormhole it. Heck, you could Vault it, but then you have to watch out for the buttresses. In extreme circumstances, you could also place it in that thing your aunt gave you that you don't know what it is, but then you'd have to have played a very, very old text adventure game to even know what I'm talking about. Just to be on the safe side, make several snowballs. Some will melt in use - I don't remember whether this is a problem in offering them, but it's certainly a problem when lobbing them at other inopportunely upstanding citizens. Incen

Gold bling, the fedora and forcing spells from spell books

Is forcing a spell from a spell book subject to AP discount when wearing a gold bling or fedora? Casting normally from a book appears to give you savings as per normal, but not forcing a spell from any spell book. Anyone know? -- Corellis 17:41, 12 February 2009 (EST)

Missing Shop

Snap, Crackle, POP!

I'm trying to do my part to keep the sewers clean of yellow (and green) turtles, but don't care to waste my pizza. I know a good POP! will scare off a turtle, but how bout a crackle? Link in dragons

Despite the appearance, it's not meant to actually be a working URL. It's a URI identifier (and it's not just dragons). It's the URI of the "container" object in the database. The field could potentially be a bag or guild store--but, of course, you can't see that field when it's there.  :) So basically, you'll almost always see your username, since that means it's in your inventory. If it happens to be "null," put the pet somewhere (guild store, dump, trade to someone...) and take it back to reset it. The only other interesting case is probably Quantum Sheep--if you're sharing a QSheep with someone, it might be their name instead of yours. The pets will autofeed out of the "container"--so if you're sharing a QSheep, make sure whoever the "container" is has food in their inventory. --Dragon 04:12, 4 February 2009 (GMT)

Ebony Question

I've been hacking my way through the Oz Interior jungle for a couple of days, but still haven't gotten a single piece of ebony... is this normal? (and I've checked my inventory. No "piece of ebony" to be found...) --bazauckland 6:55, 30 November 2008 (EST)

I made that mistake too at first. Ebony isn't gained from cutting through the jungle, it's dropped from Ebony Trees like the other pieces of wood. You'll still need to cut through the jungle, just so they spawn, but you won't need to cut every single jungle square. Kaos Dragon 18:21, 30 November 2008 (GMT)
To clarify: you don't have to cut through the thick jungle all the time. Sometimes just being next to the path should be enough to trigger the ebony trees into spawning. Circumnavigation Question

Will Blizzards, Twisters, Water Spouts, etc. cause you to abandon a circumnavigation if you attack one and are relocated? -Scrumbucket 01:33, 20 October 2008 (BST)

Haven't witnessed it before, but I doubt it. They're different from talismen and teleporters, so they shouldn't reset your quest. As long as the relocation doesn't make you miss one of the rally points for circumnavigation, you should be good. Alternatively, you could document your findings for SCIENCE!
I was too far along in that circumnavigation to risk it, but I just tested it on a new one. Dust devils (and presumably all the rest) will cause you to abandon a circumnavigation. Documented for SCIENCE! -Scrumbucket 03:28, 7 December 2008 (GMT)

The way it works is that we have two functions to move a character's location: move(), and teleport(). Using teleport() cancels a circumnavigation, and move() doesn't. When we code an action that moves you, we decide whether it's a move or a teleport, and use the appropriate function. Darksatanic 10:06, 9 December 2008 (GMT)

Where are all the fish?

I'm out here, tooling around south of Cigar Island, in my little Trawler boat. I have yet to see such a message about there being fish. And if I catch one more baconfish... Obviously, my patience is waning <deep breath>. Seriously, out in the real world of the Ozark foothills, we mark the good fishing holes on a GPS and share the coordinates on the Intarnets (like a series of tubes). Think of it like fishing in lakes. You have to be of a certain alignment. But instead of being able to fish, you have to be of a certain alignment to see the fish. You can still fish jellyfish and tuna if you are of the wrong alignment, but you just won't be able to see where without a properly aligned fellow as your aide. --Ade 14:23, 24 September 2008 (BST)

How wide an area have you covered? The shoals are large, but the ocean is *huge*. When I was trawling a week or two ago--with two different major alignments represented, so twice the sightseeing power--I had to go straight south about 100 squares before finding something. Anybody Seen HollyHamster?

A couple weeks ago, there was a game of some kind (party? festival?) and I won a prize. HollyHamster told me to come fetch it, and I stayed on the trading post for days with nothing. After half a week, I decided to palantir HH and move on for the nonce, but no word back yet. I don't imagine it's that spectacular a prize, since I had third place or so, but this nags me for closure; and as I said, HollyHamster has not been responding to hails. S. Preparing for the Horsie Genome Project

How many of the various supplies should I anticipate gathering? Assuming I have to run the results a couple of times to get rid of all the ?s, plus running it for multiple horsies, I could need a lot of stuff. What's disposable with each test? Syringe? Agar Dish? The Syringe and Agar Dish are used up in sequencing. Fortunately, your horsie is not. However, there's enough known about Horsie genetics now that it may be possible to fill in any gaps without a second sequencing. -- Thog 00:17, 18 September 2008 (BST)

I can't find that feature, but I can guess how it'll turn out for me: my Cities wiki watchlist, Cities itself, Dwarf Fortress forums, DF wiki, and then in no particular order Wikipedia, Google, daily webcomics. Missing Inventory?

Hey, brand new player so apologies if I've missed this elsewhere in the wiki. I recently broke my first rusty sword, and received a Piece of Iron in return - except it's not in my inventory at all. Nothing makes sense anymore

Returning to the master armour quest after taking a few weeks hiatas, due to the festival and such, I noticed that my wax tablet has malfunctioned. It no longer states the coordinates of an armour but says "Wax Tablet: You look at the tablet, but it doesn't make much sense". Is this a bug? Or has my tablet melted on me? I returned to Weyland to see if maybe he will give me a new tablet but he does not want to be bothered.

Hopefully I can be steered in the right direction. I seem to have bad luck with this quest, being that I had to wait 2 weeks while the bridge to oz collapsed so I could get to one of the armours, if anyone remembers that awhile ago.

Casting from Spellbooks

I just cast void calling out of a spellbook for 3 AP. It costs 4 MP to cast it. The spells page says:

Spells in a spellbook do not get used up when cast, and require the same ingredients but take 3*Mana in AP to cast, e.g. a 2 Mana spell takes 6AP to cast.

Has the AP cost been changed? It should have cost 12 AP according to this. (Not that I'm complaining or anything, perhaps the wiki is wrong?)--LimeHan 19:42, 24 August 2008 (BST)

Pets feeding themselves

Alrighty, I know that pets are -supposed- to feed themselves if they get hungry enough... My Sea Horsie feeds himself when he reaches 50% hunger. Does the autofeeding apply only to certain pets, or is the threshold different for each type? I'm not concerned about the sea horsie, but thus far, my Big Kat has not fed himself, and I just fed him up from 41% hunger. Syagrius 15:05, 20 August 2008 (BST)

My understanding is that it works great for one pet, less great if you have multiple pets. Elseware was talking about tweaks to that in IRC a day or two ago, but I'm not sure whether he actually did it, whether it actually worked, or if it's only on the test server at the moment, or what. In the Wyrm Treasure Pile (Guild Store), my Elephant #34788 ate until full, but my new Elephants #35459 and #35460 are dead. All 140-odd Sun Flowers that I stocked on Saturday(?) are gone. I just had the same thing happen with the three elephants (#35975, #35977, #35978) in inventory (hundreds of assorted sheaves gone....). All the food went into one elephant, but it didn't go over 100% full. It just kept eating anyway until every single valid food item was gone. From what elseware said on IRC when changing the code, they were meant to eat until full, but probably weren't meant to eat everything in sight. Missing parent?

Been through all the taverns on the list for Smelly Pete, including the limbo, bentnob, brighthelm and even the tavern between water & fire city. Is there some place else I'm missing? I've only found one of his parents, and can't think of any where else to search. A bug, perhaps?

I'm sure you've tried all of these, but just to confirm: There are two Taverns each in Earth City, Brighthelm, and Bentnob; and there might be (iirc) one or two Goth Bars, like the Temple of Love, in the aforementioned cities that are not listed on the Wiki. Throwing Snowballs

Having snowballed over 200 people in my quest to get everyone in the Realm, I thought I had the hang of it by now. However, every time I try to throw a snowball at royksopp, I miss. I don't recall ever missing before and I'm not missing other people, but I've failed three times with this guy. I've tried snowballing other people, doing other stuff and coming back, but nothing seems to be working at breaking my luck. Is this poor luck, a really obscure bug, an honour bestowed on this character, or am I just not getting something? Guild Talismans / Second Entrances

When we founded The Cult of Nidhoggr we sort of wanted to cut against the curb and have a pretty private guild hall. So we settled on a nice location just barely inside the interior, about 50 AP from Windy City. It's near a standing stone and a cave entrance.

Since we founded the guild we've found ourselves going less and less to the guild hall, simply because it wasn't a terrible pain to go to, but a minor one. Eventually we went just to maintain the free teleporters, treasury and store room. We kind of knew what we were getting into I guess. The definition of privacy is off the beaten path, I suppose.

But now we're having a discussion about disbanding the guild and establishing Cult of Nidhoggr 2.0 somewhere a bit more accessible. But it'll be a very, very expensive move. I'm going to be a wizard soonish and we have a MA to construct kits, so it won't be an epic deal, just a big one.

So my question is, is there any chance guild talismans or second entrances will be available anytime soon? I don't want to shell out hundreds of hundreds of AP to establish a brand new guild hall just to have a talisman crop up a week later. --Ade 16:23, 15 April 2008 (BST)

Angry Bows

It's hits. I've had bows upgrade on both random hits and random kills. If you're seeing a lot of upgrades on kills, you're probably not firing the full ten shots when you kill a beastie. (i.e., if you spent all your time attacking earth worms, you'd never see an upgrade on a mere hit, because all your hits are kills; you'd see upgrades only on kills.) I don't know of any use for them yet. Elseware said when both types of sheep were new that they'd generate resource items to be used later; we've started to see what entangled wool was for, but it's very possible that the use for wire fleece hasn't been coded yet. --Dragon 19:05, 31 March 2008 (BST)

According to the pets page, electric sheep have 672 max food points. All pets lose one FP per hour, so the electric sheep can survive for four weeks without food, and would lose 1% every 6-7 hours. Most pets have 96 max FP and thus lose about 1% per hour. --Dragon 18:11, 1 April 2008 (BST)

This may be, as the title suggests, a very stupid question, but is there any way you can remove GP from your inventory without giving them away or spending them, and easily get them back? i tried using a bag, but no drawstrings, and there doesn't appear to be a wallet item... i know about vaults, but this seems a prohibitively expensive way to go about things. any suggestions? aspirant golden-gunner supergumby

A guild treasury card is definitely the easiest way to handle your cash. Other than that, you could sell stuff at a market, buy it back and leave it resting in the market offices. None of these options are very convenient, due to the obvious potential for abuse with Golden Guns. Of course, why don't you invest in Bits of Gold for a mere 5% interest rate? Healing Tickets

I've started a noncombatant character who goes by the handle of Wind Lipara. Since he fights very little (if at all) I've had to rely on growing plums to create some working capital so he can finance quests supplies such as golden sickles and the like. The plum market has decreased as of late.

I'm considering making a clinic stall, so to speak. The stall would sell memos for variable amounts of gold. These memos, or tickets would promise Florentine spells being cast at the buyers discretion. Since the spells easily affect large groups of people with no additional cost, there would be absolutely no additional charge for others wishing to take advantage of the buyer's purchase. As a Wizard, I have no damn idea; I cast Nightingspells as acts of charity. However, unlike S.Mackie at the moment, I'm plenty willing to speculate (and pontificate!) wildly. The going rate for mana, before Wizarding was introduced, was around 1000 gold per mana. The price may have decreased slightly, but the wildly-differing prices of Time Warps, aligned Sword2s and Catanas, and the (nigh-nonexistent) perceived value of Wand2s and Wand3s shows that mana does not have a fixed cost. However, given that Nightingspells are rather expensive in a value-per-mana sense, 1000 gold/mana for Nightingspells would be absurdly high. I think around 500 gold per mana would be much closer, and see if there's any demand. You'd be underselling yourself as far as the potential value of a mage is concerned, but you'd be breaking into a fresh new market, which is a plus. The drawback to this sort of business is that you're mainly selling to the wiki-reading subset of Cities, rather than the entire player base, but you can probably still create enough of a demand to make some money. Lava Longevity

Do the lava squares around Fire City change from time to time? Do some squares cool while new ones become lava filled? Or even do the lava squares cycle through cooling and molten stages? The isolated lava squares near Fire City seem to be permanent. Other lava--such as the lava flow formerly in the Great North and the occasional lava bombs that have endangered the Citiezens--cools after a while and can be removed through lava solvents or AP expenditure. Breeding Horsies

You need both in your inventory. You can't be riding either. They need to be opposite gender and non pregnant. Gender can be tested by borrowing a horsie of known gender and seeing if there's a breed button. Kaos Dragon 19:19, 12 February 2008 (GMT)

I cannot begin to answer that question. There was a time, though, when unique items were new, and the GLs were vaguely considering an AP tax on having many unique items in your inventory. I imagine that either the host was upgraded at some point to handle it, the code was fixed to reduce the degradation due to many unique items, or the GLs decided it wasn't that bad after all. I'm guessing you lose the "bane" upon upgrade. Binding a Phaser in an attempt to have an unbreakable bound weapon does not work when your Phaser breaks/loses power. Better to just go ahead and upgrade first. Snare 20:07, 11 January 2008 (GMT)

Shaman Cabinetry

I'm a Shaman. I have a new cabinet. If I were to say, open the cabinet and go about killing things as a Shaman, and then went back to the Duke path at a later point, would the kills still count toward my military rank, or would I need a new cabinet and new kills? Oooh. Interesting question. I was a Pvt. Duke before I switched over to Shaman, and I've been killing them left and right; I've got only about eight more to go. I assumed they'd carry over, and what with all the stuffed trophies I've got listed, if it didn't work that way, I'm sure I could count it as a bug.

Did anyone ever find out what Chillwell, Dharma, and N'gann potions do? Most of the other potion titles are probably obscure references to stuff, such as toadvine(cures homesickness) has something to do with family trees. Cornucopia / Horn of Heimdall

Having converted mine almost instantly (I got one use out of it) upon receiving it so as to increase my travel options as a KOT member, I agree with Scrum. The cornucopia is incredibly awesome except when it isn't. So keep it for quite a while, make good use of it; I almost guarantee you'll get sick of it.

Any Shamans having problems getting Huge Reptiles?

I've had terrible luck with finding Huge Reptiles lately. Not only do about 75% of my Mountain Trail walks not produce a Reptile, but I've burned over 30 time warps trying to generate one; not one time warp has actually done so. Bad luck with the RNG, although, I've been saving my Time Warps for Bunny Island so I can't speak to their effectiveness in spawning Huge Reptiles. It's overhunted, and has been for months. Not only are all the shamans competing with the game spawn rules, they're competing against each other. There's just not enough to go around. I think there's been an average of one person getting enough to become a wizard per week. That's it. Spawning in such a limited area, filled with so hard to kill creatuers means the trail gets clogged with tripods within a day of being cleared. It's why I gave pu shamaning and went back to being a duke, there's just too little opporunity for Huge Lizards. It doesn't seem to have been the best of thought out quests TBH. I've been using Rainbow Blades, combined with Fleeting Strength, to kill Tripods. I had a goodly supply of rainbow blades, but they've since diminished, and I'm down to about 15 in my inventory, and ~70 in my stall. With the current remaining supply, I don't think I can clear the trail, but I could make a good-sized dent. It usually takes about two rainbow blades to kill a tripod, though it can take up to 4 if the RNG hates me. And yes, it does seem that the level 3 wizard quest was designed either for a smaller number of shamans in general, or more towards total frustration. PotatoEngineer 20:36, 28 November 2007 (GMT)

Daedalus Wings

It says that Daedalus Wings can let you fly over water, but they don't. Is this a bug, or old info? Or does it just not work with ocean terrain? - Cameron

"Flying" doesn't restrict any terrain access, it gives you access to shallow waters & high mountains (with exceptions) if you didn't have access before. It says on the Kudos page that Kudos can be negative. Can I give Kudos in to negative? Like say I have 100 Kudos, and I give 100 to a player so that I have 0. Can I continue to give that player more Kudos? - Cameron

Gas Bill

I'm working on my Master Armourer quest and I'm stuck on the Gas Bill. My reading of the puzzle suggests that one colour total will give a N coordinate and one will give an E coordinate. Trouble is, only one colour (yellow) gives an E coordinate that is not behind the Death Mountains, which are impassible, and I've checked the possible N coordinates with it and... bupkis. Am I missing something, is the puzzle too subtle for me (I've worked it several times), or is it possibly some kind of bug?Dendrast 03:47, 15 November 2007 (GMT)

That's just the thing - all of the colours (except Yellow), give too high a value, placing them East of the impassible (Death) mountains. The values I got were: Yellow 29, Green 57, Red 49, & Blue 35. There is no next step in the quest at 29E X 35N, 49N, or 57N. All other combonations are on the other side of the impassible (Death) mountains, it doesn't matter what colour indicates what direction. I seem to recall a discussion on IRC to the effect that if you can, it would be a very bad idea. As I understood it, the game remembers only one instance of the location from which the beanstalk grew, not an instance for each recursion of beanstalk. The scenario, speculatively, goes something like this: You grow a beanstalk in a nice field by the road and climb. You arrive in Cloudland. You navigate to a nice spot near the Castle, and grow another beanstalk and climb. You arrive in Cloudland. You climb down the beanstalk. You're back in Cloudland, near the Castle. You climb down the beanstalk. You're again back in Cloudland, near the Castle; not, as expected, back in the nice field by the side of the road. What are these attacks? On the monsters page under Cricket it says:

Oh whale where art thou?

I'm desperate and sick of looking. Where are the whales? Are they hiding? Am I missing something? Have they gone extinct because of the global warming? Or it's just my bad luck? I can't remember last time I saw a whale, really.. (: Tarot deck does not show them, so I keep wandering along Oz coastline and all possible bridges in the ocean hoping to see it floating around somewhere and nothing.. If the Tarot Deck doesn't show any whale there is currently none in the game. AFAIK a whale spawns every time one was killed, but some conditions can prevent this. From what I recall, whales usually spawn somewhere in the vast expanse between the southern isles and the entrance to R'1yeh. If one does spawn, you're in for quite a boat ride to get to it. You must remember that monster spawning isn't rolled for unless someone is in the vicinity. Therefore, it's possible that if you start searching the whales' usual haunts, you will find one in the process, even if the tarot says none exists. Gonzometro 18:26, 7 November 2007 (GMT)

Sure you can. A common way would be to break a magic-good, or an enchanted bling (you might have to complete the goodyear pimp quest first). And when you have mana, you can make any item that uses mana (ex: you can enchant blings)--Solune 13:05, 31 October 2007 (GMT)

To be more specific, wizards don't REgenerate mana either, they gain Mana over time (e.g. 1 mana every 8 hours for shamans) without an upper bound (unlike HP or AP). Mana is but another meta item (similar to Issues, Degrees...) and is used up as are other ressources. So if a non-wizard had 10 mana and used those up to enchant a bling or so, he/she will not get it back over time. Flt 14:38, 31 October 2007 (GMT)

As for the references, headhunters are at least partially a reference to a song. The music video features eggs prominently, the song is by Front 242 (hence their HP), etc., which is where a lot of ideas came from. But yes, there's no known "secret" to killing them--just inflict a lot of damage quickly. A Furious Bow, Phaser, or other high-damage weapon works reasonably well for a Sgt. Duke. Mages can use damage-dealing spells. Armourers are pretty much screwed, although as Random mentioned you can align them if you just need to get by. --Dragon 01:27, 1 November 2007 (GMT)

Optimizing Hard Knocks efforts as a Wizard: Crocodile

Are there duck-billed crocodiles?

Well, you could crack a Marwell Talisman, it would give you a full set of HKC with every respawn. I think the rate there is fairly high, but don't quote me on that. I don't think this would be the best method, though. I think you would be better looking in the dark with a big weapon, and a few doses of antidote just incase. The trick, of course, is that most of the high-powered players like the NE Tunnels, too, so the pool of the mountain king is sometimes cleared out when you arrive. Tribble rate of reproduction in OZ

Has anyone else noticed that tribbles don't do well in OZ? They still multiply, but not at their typical rate. I thought at first it was a change in the number of different types of food items I was carrying, but I think I've discredited that idea. I think it's just that tribbles don't reproduce well in OZ. I can go 5-10 squares before I get a tribble spawn even though I have over 100 tribbles on hand at any time. Thoughts, comments, ideas?density 15:31, 26 September 2007 (BST)

I recently took a break in the cities to kill bling wraiths and generated tribbles at a nearly every step rate. Having a whale of a time (not)

I have recently spent over 1800 ap trying to get to a whale for my military quest. Being new to sailing i did it a stupid costly way and boats wearing out were a nightmare. I am currently alongside one and I cannot attack it I have the weaponary for the necessary 40000hp but I am left floating here feeling about as useful as a chocolate kettle. Please tell me how do you kill a whale, wand of anger - nothing, harpoon - nothing, alignment wand - nothing, I even tried a magical opal and could not get a hp reading. It was nerfed, so you couldn't create a portal. The last known ways to do it was to create a different terrain: build a pentacle/picnic party/freeparty and then create your talisman. If that doesn't work, then there's probably no way--Solune 13:00, 17 September 2007 (BST)

Stall Permits

I want to upgrade my stall from the current limit of 6 items to a new limit of 11 items. I'm guessing there's no direct way to do so (and the wiki is pretty silent on the subject). That means I should shut down my old store and use a new permit to set up a new stall in the same spot. But is there a defect that prevents someone from doing so? There's a cryptic reference to it on the Stall page under Warnings. Something about not being able to reopen your stall if you close it. What gives? --Tiltowait 15:05, 6 September 2007 (BST)

At one point, the game sometimes forgot if you'd closed a stall - leading to "You can only have one stall open" errors when you tried to reopen it. Plot Bunny generation

Plot Bunnies don't seem to generate from time warps and seem to pop up pretty rarely. Anyone know what's going on?

I was able to spawn them from warps a couple of weeks ago, but I was averaging one plot bunny per 5 warps with the occasional rabbit thrown in. There may be different spawning rules on the different islands, I was on Bunny Point. hendsch 21:55, 28 August 2007 (BST)

Dream Sword

It was reported on IRC that it works sort of like a rainbow sword. The damage dealt is equal to the sqrt(trippiness). So if you were going to be tripping for the next 400 AP, it would do 20 base damage. I haven't experimented myself.hendsch 13:51, 9 August 2007 (BST)

Seal Fur House of Heyus

I was slaughtering poor baby lambs with my alt around 6E 0S (near the current party) when I noticed this place. It acts as a NPC shop, but only purchases seal pelts for 500 gold. The background is unique. It's a mottled white/grey. Anyone know what's up (presumably Heyus does)? I've been practising really hard but I still don't 'rock'... I'm interested to know if anyone keeps track of how many practices are needed to get to each stage and how much failing to practice on one day will set you back and other such things. I know I never did, so I really can't help. I can say that plugging away, even once every other day, will still get you to Rock. This leads me to believe that advancement is more pass-fail than time-based; eventually, I figure you reach a certain number of practices as your skill level and then you advance to the next. At that point, you rock until you get out of practice.

Once you rock, simply being "out of practice" (where it costs 20AP to practice again) is not enough to lose your skill. These days, I practice about once every week or two, it often costs me 20AP, and I still rock. They break pretty quickly, I think mine only got about 4 uses out of it :( Also, unless you have some source of blinding illumination (a flash gun for example) you can only really use it once in a row because the first one sucks up all the light rendering it powerless. Technically, lava solvent does work on hot lava as well, but in order to use it you have to be standing on the square in the first place--and since the lava squares are inaccessible, having the solvent doesn't help. I agree with the others--the lava is inaccessible for the foreseeable future, but there's really no reason to discard it--put it in a bag or give it to Mackie or something, just in case there's eventually some event that makes the lava go away. --Dragon 03:21, 19 July 2007 (BST)

Rules for Changing Careers

I have no experience here, but each career switch takes 2 days' AP. Bartering for the occasional item or favor from other players is far more productive than doing all of the work yourself, considering the AP cost. PotatoEngineer 15:10, 16 July 2007 (BST)

I ran across a Cat in the interior jungle today. Every time I try to attack it, it "runs and hides," turning into a Scaredy Cat and taking 0 damage. The Scaredy Cat is un-attackable even with 'angry' weapons. After a few seconds it reverts to a Cat. So far, only my goldfish has been able to damage it & I've tried:

Flt and I believe we have discovered the secret. The Cat can only be damaged if it is neutral alignment or your alignment. I had no problem doing one in with a sling. I'm currently a smith, so it was hitting 4 with each of its attacks. Of course, you need enough room to sling a cat. Polychromatic Dragon Problem

I spawned a poly dragon next to a mirror monster in order to tick it off the trophy cabinet list. Having hacked away most of its AP and with (I think) only the Air part left I ran out of AP and took a break. Upon logging back on the HP of the PD was listed as ( ) and I could no longer damage it regardless of my alignment. Very frustrating. Any idea why this happened or what I can do about it?
