[09:42] <darksatanic> I've just got 33+22+1+2+3+6 and 31+4+13+19
[09:42] <dragon> 33+22+6+4+2 and 31+19+13+3+1. Added bonus that
this separates them into groups of five bars each

[09:43] <dragon> (DS, are they always 5-bar and 5-bar groups, or
could they be unbalanced in that way?)
[09:43] <darksatanic> dragon: I'm just checking.
[09:43] <Mackie> Five... bars... each.
[09:43] <darksatanic> Ah, it does say 5 in each group.
[09:43] <Mackie> 'Cause it says that.

Carving out a guild

Okay, so I've got some supplies, I've resigned from my old guild, gotten some supplies to build a new one (thank you Syagrius and to Sertularian for helping to dig up bones!) and bought my new permit. I establish the guild in a favorable spot, go down into it and begin digging. After a few cuts of stone, I get no message at all, but the AP disappears. I burn through a few hundred AP and can't manage to clear a single bit of rock. Maybe it's a bug, so I resign from this guild, get another permit and open a second one. Same thing. I've tried digging using misril blings or without them, I've tried using weapons, bare hands, a spade and even the piece of guild terrain I want to put there, all to no avail. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any help - Jon 20:40, 16 May 2010 (BST)

That's...odd. I just tried cutting through guildspace, and it worked fine. What type of square are you trying to cut into? (You may need a glowing item to see it.) If you don't mind sharing the guild location, could you say where it is so we can try there? Can you try cutting through guildspace in someone else's guild, just to be sure you can? (Incidentally, Misril Blings, spades, etc. will change the AP cost, but shouldn't change whether or not you can cut through.) --Dragon 23:40, 16 May 2010 (BST)
Indeed - point me in the direction - I've got close to 15k AP I can burn. Syagrius 01:26, 17 May 2010 (BST)
I'm also happy to help. -- Sertularian 02:00, 17 May 2010 (BST)
The squares I'm trying are stones (at least that's what I get for the first couple cuts) when cutting them, for some reason my browser doesn't label any underground terrain for me). Forgot to mention, I've also tried using Illumination spells, but anyway, the location is 0W 22N. Thanks -Jon 15:34, 17 May 2010 (BST)
Yep, can't make any headway. Odd. Syagrius 19:29, 17 May 2010 (BST)
Wait --- isn't the underground (dungeon with smelly pete and the SW tunnel system) coming through there? Syagrius 00:45, 18 May 2010 (BST)
Guildspace is separate from the Underground; they shouldn't interfere.
Just tried cutting a space out in Ratatoskr's Burrow and managed to clear the spot rather quickly. It's also worth noting that I have tried cutting with Jon as well as both alts - Aazamon and Wyrd - and had the same problem -Jon 15:42, 17 May 2010 (BST)
I wonder if the location might be the issue. Where was your first attempt? Most of the guilds posted on Guilds are within the main area, and it's suggestive that the Forbidden Guild is apparently separated from the Stonecutters "by a void". Anyone happen to know exactly where that void is located in above-ground coordinates? -Scrumbucket 20:36, 17 May 2010 (BST)
The forbidden guild's above-ground location is the center of the forbidden city in the great desert. I've been there and seen it. Syagrius 00:41, 18 May 2010 (BST)
My original location was 4E 24N. I'm thoroughly perplexed, particularly in light of what Dragon found. -Jon 18:55, 19 May 2010 (BST)
Puff and I went to check it out. With some glowing bling, this is what we found:
Image:Excavation.png
That...looks buggy. (It doesn't look like a "void" though.) Maybe there was a cave-in and the guild entrance is over top of it? Maybe there's something special about the 0W location? Maybe something changed with the terrain code such that guild entrances are now buggy? --Dragon 02:19, 18 May 2010 (BST)
Oh, I should mention that two of the Tunnel squares were there when I got there. The other two were Rock. I tried to cut them (and did so, successfully) but it didn't get rid of the paths. After the rock had been cut away, the "cut" action doesn't do anything but waste AP, as reported above. --Dragon 00:48, 20 May 2010 (BST)

Changing careers

With apologies up front if my search-fu was just not strong enough, but I've been unable to locate any certain answer on this. If I've got a knight who goes armorer or wizardly, then back to knight, then wants to go back to armoring or wizarding, must he complete the initial quests for those classes again? I'm familiar with the registry to return to knighthood, just unsure about returning to the other two. Thanks! -Jon 17:54, 29 March 2010 (BST)

You don't have to start again, no; I think you still need a XXXX to switch back to being a mage, and to find the Ancient Castle to switch to an armourer, but you carry on from where you were when you switched away. Andrewsi 19:09, 29 March 2010 (BST)

Damage Absorbtion Stacking: Corellis

I am slaying phoenixes right now, and it would appear that armour, damage reduction through spells and the iron bling do not stack. Armour appears to stack with damage reduction through spells, but all 3 sources of damage reduction do not work when used together. Can anyone else confirm this?

You'll Grow Into It: Dragon

I've a very large variety of dwagon. Yesterday evening, it hit 8 weeks, so I can no longer unequip it and hope to reequip it in the foreseeable future*. As of now, the deequip button says "Stop Riding."
The trouble is, GL Andrew says it is actually possible for a transport to have a Movemod rather than a TransportMoveMod, and due to his gargantuan nature Ammaud's modifier in either case would be 0.
We know with a fair degree of certainty that TransportMoveMod isn't in effect because equipping Winged Boots is still helpful to me**, but we can't rule out other scenarios. We also don't know whether or not Ammaud, given his circumstances, counts as being ridden by the game.
Question 1: Does a dwagon override equipment as a transport, or do things like winged boots actually modify its movement?
Question 2: If a dwagon (or any pet transport) growing up in inventory does not affect movement until unequipped and reequipped as ridden, how would I go about documenting this as a feature of the game?

* ...although it's a pleasant coincidence that the only GL to come close to a commitment to expand our pet footprint via quest is also the only GL currently programming in the game.
** And thank goodness for that or I'm not sure I'd have the strength to keep training him.

Looking forward to your replies. S. Mackie 18:56, 10 June 2009 (BST)

Can you get on a boat? Syagrius 21:55, 10 June 2009 (BST)
Hmm. I'm inclined to doubt it, as Ammaud's square portrait encompasses mine, but that would say something interesting in itself.
Testing... Seems verily transport is denied me. This could be quite inconvenient. S. Mackie 18:13, 11 June 2009 (BST)
Addendum: So, on consideration, we know at least two tumblers are in place. It's a pet transport, no doubt about it. Is it acting as a pet transport for movement purposes? That is, is it coded as it was intended to be, or has the game failed a sanity check because it grew up on my person? S. Mackie 18:22, 11 June 2009 (BST)
Ummm... we have sanity checks? I want them found, right now, wherever they are, and shot immediately! Darksatanic 18:37, 11 June 2009 (BST)
I've yet to decide if I care to rephrase. Doesn't matter. Still looking for input. S. Mackie 01:25, 12 June 2009 (BST)

Super 'King Menthol

Make a Super 'King Menthol from a Fag and a Sprig of Mint.

This has been in the recipe book for a while. Has anyone made or smoked one yet? Or does everyone fear the potential stats loss? Kaos Dragon 17:22, 1 June 2009 (BST)

You get a bit of a boost, but these things must be bad for you.
I received +8 ap, but -5 hp. No changes to max ap or max hp. Oh, I'm also hallucinating. I think I'm the Giant :) Syagrius 18:09, 1 June 2009 (BST)

Frost Castle

So, I just died after visiting the Zu warriors (note to self, beware the buttonmasher!) -- is there something fun to do up in the frost castle in Sniffleheim, or is it just a place to visit? Syagrius 01:47, 23 May 2009 (BST)

There aren't any specific quests, if that's what you're asking. It's a place to visit, and it's the only place to find Frost Giants (which drop Ice weapons), but that's about it. --Dragon 02:10, 23 May 2009 (BST)
I didn't think there were any quests, just wondering if there was anything fun to kill :) Frost Giants... Might warrant another trip up there. Syagrius 06:19, 23 May 2009 (BST)
Not just ice weapons, but ice talismans and more importantly, ice wands. --Corellis 8:39, 1 Jun 2009 (EST)

Wacky Alignments and Instruments

Speaking of wacky alignments from alcohol abuse ... are there instruments for the minor alignments yet? :) -- Rhapsodie 05:42, 15 May 2009 (BST)

Dragon Information

There was a bug, it has been fixed. Could all pets of dragons please check their owner's Alignment and note changes on Pet_Dragon. I believe this change will not have affected many dragons, but please do check. (In bonus news we have very nearly all of the dragon DNA sorted out) --naath 17:16, 6 April 2009 (BST)

It's not just alignment that may have been affected. Could people please recheck flight, movement modifier, and breath weapon too. This might legitimately affect a few more (there's already been one movement modifier change). Thanks. --Dragon 05:43, 7 April 2009 (BST)

Wacky Alignments from Alcohol Abuse?

I forget, is it possible to become one of the funny alignments by drinking one of the random alignment change cocktails? Was there any one in particular? Thank you greatly! density 14:37, 1 April 2009 (BST)

I've only ever become the majors and Neutral from cocktail abuse -- Thog 15:59, 1 April 2009 (BST)
Well that's no good. What's the best way to become a wacky alignment if you don't own a rainbow wand or wand of strange alignment? density 14:27, 2 April 2009 (BST)
You can't. --naath 15:53, 2 April 2009 (BST)
That's not a good answer. Can I have another, please. sigh.density 16:00, 2 April 2009 (BST)
Ask me. I can help you out with any alignment except, currently, Pure. -- Sertularian 23:21, 2 April 2009 (BST)

Preventing Snowballs Melting

I am almost finished putting together a totems collection for my wizard and she was about to set off to get a huge snowball - but then it dawned on me that it might melt before she gets to use it. Can you keep snowballs frozen by putting them in bags? -- Rhapsodie 10:45, 17 February 2009 (GMT)

Bag it! ....or Wormhole it. Heck, you could Vault it, but then you have to watch out for the buttresses. In extreme circumstances, you could also place it in that thing your aunt gave you that you don't know what it is, but then you'd have to have played a very, very old text adventure game to even know what I'm talking about. PotatoEngineer 11:08, 17 February 2009 (GMT)
Sounds suspiciously Hitchhikers-like to me but I don't think I ever played the game. And thanks! :) -- Rhapsodie 11:17, 17 February 2009 (GMT)
Just to be on the safe side, make several snowballs. Some will melt in use - I don't remember whether this is a problem in offering them, but it's certainly a problem when lobbing them at other inopportunely upstanding citizens. Incen

Gold bling, the fedora and forcing spells from spell books

Is forcing a spell from a spell book subject to AP discount when wearing a gold bling or fedora? Casting normally from a book appears to give you savings as per normal, but not forcing a spell from any spell book. Anyone know? -- Corellis 17:41, 12 February 2009 (EST)

It probably works. As I recall, the "speed" power that those items grant you is applied at a lower level. Try it and see :-) AndyLandy 14:12, 17 February 2009 (GMT)

Missing Shop

I er, managed to misplace my shop in the mall. It was on the 14th Floor last time I looked (which admittedly was a while ago) but now its gone. Anyone seen it?

Chronos 18:47, 10 February 2009 (GMT)

Shops and stalls are auto-closed after two weeks (or is it a month?) of inactivity. Chances are, yours was closed and its inventory moved to yours when you weren't looking. -- Thog 21:27, 10 February 2009 (GMT)
I thought it was one week, but it might be two. But I agree with Thog's assessment as to what happened--if you don't want your shop to close, click "Manage Shop" every so often. (Or get people to buy things!) --Dragon 01:57, 11 February 2009 (GMT)
Suppose its the global recession, businesses closing everywhere. Mind you having not turned up at work for about a month its no surprise I went under. Chronos 22:53, 11 February 2009 (GMT)

Snap, Crackle, POP!

I'm trying to do my part to keep the sewers clean of yellow (and green) turtles, but don't care to waste my pizza. I know a good POP! will scare off a turtle, but how bout a crackle? I don't have a copy of that spell, and don't know if I should bother chasing one down. Do you know how many HP a crackle spell will affect?density 13:44, 7 February 2009 (GMT)

Link in dragons

At the bottom of my dragon description, just below the item number there's a broken link: http://id.cities.totl.net/user/solune Do you know if it ever worked and what its purpose was ?--Solune 21:39, 3 February 2009 (GMT)

Despite the appearance, it's not meant to actually be a working URL. It's a URI identifier (and it's not just dragons). It's the URI of the "container" object in the database. The field could potentially be a bag or guild store--but, of course, you can't see that field when it's there.  :) So basically, you'll almost always see your username, since that means it's in your inventory. If it happens to be "null," put the pet somewhere (guild store, dump, trade to someone...) and take it back to reset it. The only other interesting case is probably Quantum Sheep--if you're sharing a QSheep with someone, it might be their name instead of yours. The pets will autofeed out of the "container"--so if you're sharing a QSheep, make sure whoever the "container" is has food in their inventory. --Dragon 04:12, 4 February 2009 (GMT)
I guess the container of my QSheep has remained in the stomach of a troll, it displays as 'void'... Or it might be the fact that the sheep is dead.--Solune 09:19, 4 February 2009 (GMT)
Try putting it somewhere and picking it back up. --Dragon 18:01, 4 February 2009 (GMT)

Ebony Question

I've been hacking my way through the Oz Interior jungle for a couple of days, but still haven't gotten a single piece of ebony... is this normal? (and I've checked my inventory. No "piece of ebony" to be found...) --bazauckland 6:55, 30 November 2008 (EST)

I made that mistake too at first. Ebony isn't gained from cutting through the jungle, it's dropped from Ebony Trees like the other pieces of wood. You'll still need to cut through the jungle, just so they spawn, but you won't need to cut every single jungle square. Kaos Dragon 18:21, 30 November 2008 (GMT)
To clarify: you don't have to cut through the thick jungle all the time. Sometimes just being next to the path should be enough to trigger the ebony trees into spawning. If you don't see an ebony tree in that space, cutting the thick jungle should not make a difference. Corellis 2:21, 2 December 2008 (EST)
...3 days of cutting later.... just checking: Ebony Trees are like Rubber Trees, right? They say clearly "Ebony Tree"... (sigh...resumes hacking through jungle) --bazauckland 20:21, 2 December 2008 (EST)
yes. They're very rare. It's not uncommon to spend days hacking through jungle without seeing one. --Dragon 01:48, 3 December 2008 (GMT)

One more question: I just tried to recreate a vault using a permit and get:

You already have a vault.

Huh? No, I'm pretty sure that's the problem, that I *don't* have a vault anymore. --Tiltowait 13:24, 27 October 2008 (GMT)

Circumnavigation Question

Will Blizzards, Twisters, Water Spouts, etc. cause you to abandon a circumnavigation if you attack one and are relocated? -Scrumbucket 01:33, 20 October 2008 (BST)

Haven't witnessed it before, but I doubt it. They're different from talismen and teleporters, so they shouldn't reset your quest. As long as the relocation doesn't make you miss one of the rally points for circumnavigation, you should be good. Alternatively, you could document your findings for SCIENCE!
I was too far along in that circumnavigation to risk it, but I just tested it on a new one. Dust devils (and presumably all the rest) will cause you to abandon a circumnavigation. Documented for SCIENCE! -Scrumbucket 03:28, 7 December 2008 (GMT)
I have a sneaking suspicion that circumnavigation doesn't test for specific teleportation methods, but rather checks if your location changes using any method except the usual move buttons. PotatoEngineer 20:00, 7 December 2008 (GMT)
Actually, I thought it just looked at two sequential positions and saw if they were adjacent, with perhaps a few exceptions for entering a plane/train/taxi--Solune 17:04, 8 December 2008 (GMT)
Doesn't the Hop Spell break a circumnavigation? That's only one square, as I recall. PotatoEngineer 00:34, 9 December 2008 (GMT)
The way it works is that we have two functions to move a character's location: move(), and teleport(). Using teleport() cancels a circumnavigation, and move() doesn't. When we code an action that moves you, we decide whether it's a move or a teleport, and use the appropriate function. Darksatanic 10:06, 9 December 2008 (GMT)

Where are all the fish?

I'm out here, tooling around south of Cigar Island, in my little Trawler boat. I have yet to see such a message about there being fish. And if I catch one more baconfish... Obviously, my patience is waning <deep breath>. Seriously, out in the real world of the Ozark foothills, we mark the good fishing holes on a GPS and share the coordinates on the Intarnets (like a series of tubes). We show up with our explosive device of choice, boom, fish for supper. How hard is that, people. --Tiltowait 14:03, 24 September 2008 (BST)

Think of it like fishing in lakes. You have to be of a certain alignment. But instead of being able to fish, you have to be of a certain alignment to see the fish. You can still fish jellyfish and tuna if you are of the wrong alignment, but you just won't be able to see where without a properly aligned fellow as your aide. --Ade 14:23, 24 September 2008 (BST)
Right, but I'm not seeing any fish for my *current* alignment. Are they pretty rare or heavily fished out? --Tiltowait 18:51, 24 September 2008 (BST)
How wide an area have you covered? The shoals are large, but the ocean is *huge*. When I was trawling a week or two ago--with two different major alignments represented, so twice the sightseeing power--I had to go straight south about 100 squares before finding something. (Also note that due to the size of a shoal, it's generally better to cover a large span rather than making a thorough search of a small area.) --Dragon 01:53, 25 September 2008 (BST)
Ah, so alignment fish are somewhat rare. That's what I wanted to know. --Tiltowait 13:55, 25 September 2008 (BST)

Anybody Seen HollyHamster?

A couple weeks ago, there was a game of some kind (party? festival?) and I won a prize. HollyHamster told me to come fetch it, and I stayed on the trading post for days with nothing. After half a week, I decided to palantir HH and move on for the nonce, but no word back yet. I don't imagine it's that spectacular a prize, since I had third place or so, but this nags me for closure; and as I said, HollyHamster has not been responding to hails. S. Mackie 19:00, 22 September 2008 (BST)

The prizes were for Cities Ditties. I vaguely recall HollyHamster saying she was going on vacation for a week or so. Should be back soon. Gonzometro 19:13, 22 September 2008 (BST)
Ah. Woulda been nice to know, yes. Danke. S. Mackie 20:31, 22 September 2008 (BST)
Sorry I have just moved house and haven't been able to get on the internet for ages, I just palantired you but then saw thisd, if you are around I will be in earth city (and actually able to get online) tomorrow... ford_prefect 17:25, 23 September 2008 (BST)
Understood. Been there done that. Any pets die? S. Mackie 09:13, 24 September 2008 (BST)

Preparing for the Horsie Genome Project

How many of the various supplies should I anticipate gathering? Assuming I have to run the results a couple of times to get rid of all the ?s, plus running it for multiple horsies, I could need a lot of stuff. What's disposable with each test? Syringe? Agar Dish? The Booze Preparation? --Tiltowait 19:41, 17 September 2008 (BST)

The Syringe and Agar Dish are used up in sequencing. Fortunately, your horsie is not. However, there's enough known about Horsie genetics now that it may be possible to fill in any gaps without a second sequencing. -- Thog 00:17, 18 September 2008 (BST)

Cities Most Visited

Firefox 3 has a neat little feature on the bookmark toolbar that tells you your most visited sites. Mine breaks down as follows:

  • Cities logout page
  • Gmail: Inbox
  • Google
  • Cities wiki: Main page
  • Cities wiki: Recent Changes
  • Gmail: Drafts folder
  • Cities login page
  • Gmail: Sent folder
  • Gmail: Spam folder
  • 4 Cities Quest Tracker

I think this says something disturbing about my browsing habits. Especially considering I work from home a great deal.

Is Cities one of your most visited websites? If so, about where does in rank? --Ade 15:55, 9 September 2008 (BST)

I can't find that feature, but I can guess how it'll turn out for me: my Cities wiki watchlist, Cities itself, Dwarf Fortress forums, DF wiki, and then in no particular order Wikipedia, Google, daily webcomics. Which is interesting, because I hardly play at all these days. -Scrumbucket 18:46, 9 September 2008 (BST)
Clear your location bar, select it, and press down. I have cities/game as 5th and wiki/main as 7th.
Embarrassingly (or not), Cities is all ten of mine. :P Recent changes, logout, my user page, the main page, the game, Glendale mapper, Citiesberg, another user page, The Vents (I am in there atm) and the Pedigree page... Rhapsodie 08:53, 18 September 2008 (BST)

Missing Inventory?

Hey, brand new player so apologies if I've missed this elsewhere in the wiki. I recently broke my first rusty sword, and received a Piece of Iron in return - except it's not in my inventory at all. Are bits like this stored somewhere else on my profile/person/thing, or has it just unwittingly disappeared? -- Zacharias 22:44, 8 September 2008 (BST)

Look for "Bits of Iron"--LimeHan 04:13, 9 September 2008 (BST)
Thanks LimeHan - for some reason the one 'bit' just hasn't appeared. Once I found more than one, it seems to have gone in to my inventory just fine --Zacharias 21:51, 9 September 2008 (BST)

Fiend Skull ?

Has anyone seen one? Have they've even been implemented yet? They are needed to make a spring bling. For that matter does anyone know what a spring bling is for? --TheRealKilgore 15:09, 8 September 2008 (BST)

I haven't seen one, but have you tried killing a demon recently? Yes, demons vs devils, blah blah blah. Still worth a try. -- Thog 16:23, 8 September 2008 (BST)
I reckon that if it is a DEMON drop it's pretty damn rare since I don't have one. Big Brother denies all knowledge. --naath 11:45, 9 September 2008 (BST)

Nothing makes sense anymore

Returning to the master armour quest after taking a few weeks hiatas, due to the festival and such, I noticed that my wax tablet has malfunctioned. It no longer states the coordinates of an armour but says "Wax Tablet: You look at the tablet, but it doesn't make much sense". Is this a bug? Or has my tablet melted on me? I returned to Weyland to see if maybe he will give me a new tablet but he does not want to be bothered.

Hopefully I can be steered in the right direction. I seem to have bad luck with this quest, being that I had to wait 2 weeks while the bridge to oz collapsed so I could get to one of the armours, if anyone remembers that awhile ago.

--Shatattack 06:25, 7 September 2008 (BST)

That shouldn't have happened. Probably worth reporting on the bugs page. Darksatanic 10:29, 15 September 2008 (BST)

Casting from Spellbooks

I just cast void calling out of a spellbook for 3 AP. It costs 4 MP to cast it. The spells page says:

Spells in a spellbook do not get used up when cast, and require the same ingredients but take 3*Mana in AP to cast, e.g. a 2 Mana spell takes 6AP to cast.

Has the AP cost been changed? It should have cost 12 AP according to this. (Not that I'm complaining or anything, perhaps the wiki is wrong?)--LimeHan 19:42, 24 August 2008 (BST)

That page is out of date. AP costs for spellbooks were reduced. - Isambard 20:27, 24 August 2008 (BST)

Poacher

Limehan is in a transport at 63E 55S (Holiday Island). It is called "Poacher" and looks sort of like a tank, but with grey and white colors. Anyone one of these before? --Ade 18:05, 24 August 2008 (BST)

It's an elephant. Kaos Dragon 18:22, 24 August 2008 (BST)
Yeah, I'm riding it so I can see the fullness percentage, it doesn't show up when the elephant is held (possibly a bug or the GLs keeping elephants as inconvenient as possible?)--LimeHan 19:42, 24 August 2008 (BST)

Pets feeding themselves

Alrighty, I know that pets are -supposed- to feed themselves if they get hungry enough... My Sea Horsie feeds himself when he reaches 50% hunger. Does the autofeeding apply only to certain pets, or is the threshold different for each type? I'm not concerned about the sea horsie, but thus far, my Big Kat has not fed himself, and I just fed him up from 41% hunger. Syagrius 15:05, 20 August 2008 (BST)

Dunno. Every day, though, my gorram Hate feeds itself before I can give it something more helpful and/or less expensive. I want to feed it an Issue, and it appears I'll never get to. S. Mackie 16:16, 20 August 2008 (BST)
My understanding is that it works great for one pet, less great if you have multiple pets. Elseware was talking about tweaks to that in IRC a day or two ago, but I'm not sure whether he actually did it, whether it actually worked, or if it's only on the test server at the moment, or what. PotatoEngineer 16:42, 20 August 2008 (BST)
It keeps taking Seaweed for the Seahorsies and I had it feed my Quantum Sheep once. But it doesn't seem to have done anything about my Hate, bit odd. 50% is too high, IMO. --naath 16:57, 20 August 2008 (BST)
I *have* been working on improvements to this. I've run lots of tests and failed to recreate the autofeed failure. If you can give me the ID # of a pet that won't autofeed, that'd help lots. Also I've just changed it from 50% to 25%... better? Elseware 17:32, 20 August 2008 (BST)
In the Wyrm Treasure Pile (Guild Store), my Elephant #34788 ate until full, but my new Elephants #35459 and #35460 are dead. All 140-odd Sun Flowers that I stocked on Saturday(?) are gone. I can't tell for certain whether they were eaten or "borrowed" by one of my Guild-Mates -- perhaps you can -- but that seems like an awful lot of Sun Flowers, even for Elephants. -- Sertularian 00:02, 21 August 2008 (BST)
Update: At about this timestamp, I am placing two fresh Elephants, #36589 and #36590, and 60 Sun Flowers in the Wyrm Treasure Pile. I have asked my Guild-Mates not to molest them, just in case the disappearing Sun Flowers were not related to the feeding issues. -- Sertularian 00:48, 21 August 2008 (BST)
My elephant, #34890, just ate ALL its available food in one go. http://rafb.net/p/PObcfI88.html Kaos Dragon 03:08, 21 August 2008 (BST)
That would explain my Elephants - presumably, #34788 reached 25% FP and ate 100-odd Sun Flowers, leaving #35459 and #35460 to promptly starve to death. My apologies for any implied misdeeds by my Guild-Mates. Note to all Obsession, Hate and Peeve owners: If you ever let any of them get below 25%, all -- not one, all -- of your Issues, Strikes, Measures of Serenity and Degrees of Enlightenment will be forfeit. And you can't bag either the beasts or their food... -- Sertularian 04:13, 21 August 2008 (BST)
Was it overfed or did most of the food just disappear? If it got overfed, perhaps there isn't a cap on how much percentage of fullness they'll eat before stopping.--LimeHan 05:48, 21 August 2008 (BST)
I just had the same thing happen with the three elephants (#35975, #35977, #35978) in inventory (hundreds of assorted sheaves gone....). All the food went into one elephant, but it didn't go over 100% full. It just kept eating anyway until every single valid food item was gone. From what elseware said on IRC when changing the code, they were meant to eat until full, but probably weren't meant to eat everything in sight. To second Sertularian's warning, if you have a pet that eats something expensive, feed it before it hits 25%! Ravensdance 06:40, 21 August 2008 (BST)
Elseware - the big kat I have (Tigger) wouldn't autofeed before - his ID is Unique item #9716. Syagrius 15:12, 21 August 2008 (BST)
My new elephant (#36668) was at 86% last night, now it's at 140%... I didn't see any message about eating, and I don't even know if I have any less items. I know I don't have any buns, so where'd that 40% overfeeding come from?--LimeHan 18:48, 21 August 2008 (BST)
All three of my elephants are now stuffed, which is more than they were at this morning after everything got eaten. I don't have any items left that the elephants would eat this morning, so I think it's more 'king fiddling. It's probably related to all the dead pets coming back to life. Ravensdance 19:05, 21 August 2008 (BST)
Yes, it was more 'king fiddling. The first attempt at autofeeding didn't work right, so the 'king set all pets to be alive and stuffed to 150%. --Dragon 03:23, 22 August 2008 (BST)
possibly a stupid question, but does autofeeding include a horsie grazing on pasture, or does it have to be a consumable food item from your inventory? Supergumby

Missing parent?

Been through all the taverns on the list for Smelly Pete, including the limbo, bentnob, brighthelm and even the tavern between water & fire city. Is there some place else I'm missing? I've only found one of his parents, and can't think of any where else to search. A bug, perhaps?

I'm sure you've tried all of these, but just to confirm: There are two Taverns each in Earth City, Brighthelm, and Bentnob; and there might be (iirc) one or two Goth Bars, like the Temple of Love, in the aforementioned cities that are not listed on the Wiki. Beyond that, are there new bars in any of the new towns that his parents could go to? (God Forbid.) -- Sertularian 23:18, 13 August 2008 (BST)
Don't forget Wallbangers and the tavern in the Festival. Last I heard, Pete's parents only ended up in the vicinity of the 'Kingdom, so you probably don't need to check Oz or the Frozen North/South... -- Thog 03:10, 14 August 2008 (BST)

Hit point gain

Something is giving me 2 hit points every hour but I don't know what. Could it be a pirate hat ?--Solune 20:29, 30 May 2008 (BST)

Nighting Storm spell gives that. Pirate hat doesn't (or at least, didn't) give HP bonuses. Syagrius 04:07, 14 August 2008 (BST)

Throwing Snowballs

Having snowballed over 200 people in my quest to get everyone in the Realm, I thought I had the hang of it by now. However, every time I try to throw a snowball at royksopp, I miss. I don't recall ever missing before and I'm not missing other people, but I've failed three times with this guy. I've tried snowballing other people, doing other stuff and coming back, but nothing seems to be working at breaking my luck. Is this poor luck, a really obscure bug, an honour bestowed on this character, or am I just not getting something? It's starting to feel a little too much like real life (in which I have been known to miss a stationary target at arms'-length by as much as an arms'-length!) :( -Scrumbucket 08:50, 22 April 2008 (BST)

There are two chars, one in Water City and one in Windy City (iirc), that are named after bands and are some sort of test char. Like the Great Lords, you can no longer snowball or poke them. The same seems true of Archduke Ferdinand in Earth City. -- Sertularian 13:11, 22 April 2008 (BST)

Guild Talismans / Second Entrances

When we founded The Cult of Nidhoggr we sort of wanted to cut against the curb and have a pretty private guild hall. So we settled on a nice location just barely inside the interior, about 50 AP from Windy City. It's near a standing stone and a cave entrance.

Since we founded the guild we've found ourselves going less and less to the guild hall, simply because it wasn't a terrible pain to go to, but a minor one. Eventually we went just to maintain the free teleporters, treasury and store room. We kind of knew what we were getting into I guess. The definition of privacy is off the beaten path, I suppose.

But now we're having a discussion about disbanding the guild and establishing Cult of Nidhoggr 2.0 somewhere a bit more accessible. But it'll be a very, very expensive move. I'm going to be a wizard soonish and we have a MA to construct kits, so it won't be an epic deal, just a big one.

So my question is, is there any chance guild talismans or second entrances will be available anytime soon? I don't want to shell out hundreds of hundreds of AP to establish a brand new guild hall just to have a talisman crop up a week later. --Ade 16:23, 15 April 2008 (BST)

The Order of the Wyrm would like to remind you that for a mere 2000 GP you can teleport to 2AP away from a Standing Stone --naath 10:48, 16 April 2008 (BST)
back doors are now an option, but as it takes 5 guild locations to each realworld one, I think it'll be a bad way to go. Another option would be to fund another guild to make a teleport to yours. Elseware 11:54, 14 August 2008 (BST)

Angry Bows

Other than 1 in 80 change to upgrade, has anyone worked out more specifics? Is that 1 in 80 hits or 1 in 80 kills? I took a look at PotatoEngineer's page, and guess that means hits. I have yet to make one upgrade, but confess I haven't tried consistently. --Tiltowait 15:02, 8 April 2008 (BST)

It's hits. I've had bows upgrade on both random hits and random kills. If you're seeing a lot of upgrades on kills, you're probably not firing the full ten shots when you kill a beastie. (i.e., if you spent all your time attacking earth worms, you'd never see an upgrade on a mere hit, because all your hits are kills; you'd see upgrades only on kills.) PotatoEngineer 19:00, 8 April 2008 (BST)
BTW, PE, that's a nice page you've got. I just found it today. How had I previously lived without all that stuff! --Tiltowait 19:34, 8 April 2008 (BST)

Wire Fleece & Electric Sheep

Of what use are they? There doesn't seem to be anything in the wiki about them --Tiltowait 14:40, 31 March 2008 (BST)

I don't know of any use for them yet. Elseware said when both types of sheep were new that they'd generate resource items to be used later; we've started to see what entangled wool was for, but it's very possible that the use for wire fleece hasn't been coded yet. --Dragon 19:05, 31 March 2008 (BST)
I was wondering if that were the case. Thanks, Dragon. --Tiltowait 14:01, 1 April 2008 (BST)

In a related question, does anyone have experience with Electric Sheep? <insert bad Dreaming Andriod/Blade Runner pun below> I'm pet-sitting for X-Himy. I was at first concerned that my small supply of power crystals was going to be quickly consumed. Oil doesn't fill them up very quickly. But they don't seem to eat at the normal rate of other pets. --Tiltowait 14:01, 1 April 2008 (BST)

1% hunger every 3 or 4 hours instead of every hour, like Dogbots? Random4518 17:04, 1 April 2008 (BST)
According to the pets page, electric sheep have 672 max food points. All pets lose one FP per hour, so the electric sheep can survive for four weeks without food, and would lose 1% every 6-7 hours. Most pets have 96 max FP and thus lose about 1% per hour. --Dragon 18:11, 1 April 2008 (BST)
That makes a lot more sense, I should have read more closely. Thanks Dragon, you continue to impress with superlative knowledge of this stuff. So the best bet is stock up on oil, because I'll need 2 oils daily (24 hours / 12 fps = 2 units). That's a lot more reasonable. --Tiltowait 22:11, 2 April 2008 (BST)

really dense gold piece question

This may be, as the title suggests, a very stupid question, but is there any way you can remove GP from your inventory without giving them away or spending them, and easily get them back? i tried using a bag, but no drawstrings, and there doesn't appear to be a wallet item... i know about vaults, but this seems a prohibitively expensive way to go about things. any suggestions? aspirant golden-gunner supergumby

yeah, it's deliberately hard. You could use a Vault (which will cost you lots in vault talismans) or you could get a stall and leave most of you cash in it. --naath 21:23, 26 March 2008 (GMT)
curses, i had feared as much. thanks though. supergumby
If you're in a Guild, then I think a Guild Treasury might work.... Andrewsi 08:10, 27 March 2008 (GMT)
A guild treasury card is definitely the easiest way to handle your cash. Other than that, you could sell stuff at a market, buy it back and leave it resting in the market offices. None of these options are very convenient, due to the obvious potential for abuse with Golden Guns. Of course, why don't you invest in Bits of Gold for a mere 5% interest rate? Healing Tickets

I've started a noncombatant character who goes by the handle of Wind Lipara. Since he fights very little (if at all) I've had to rely on growing plums to create some working capital so he can finance quests supplies such as golden sickles and the like. The plum market has decreased as of late.

I'm considering making a clinic stall, so to speak. The stall would sell memos for variable amounts of gold. These memos, or tickets would promise Florentine spells being cast at the buyers discretion. Since the spells easily affect large groups of people with no additional cost, there would be absolutely no additional charge for others wishing to take advantage of the buyer's purchase. Would anyone use this service, you think? --Ade 01:58, 19 March 2008 (GMT)

As a Shaman, I have no damn idea. S. Mackie 07:32, 19 March 2008 (GMT)
As a Wizard, I have no damn idea; I cast Nightingspells as acts of charity. However, unlike S.Mackie at the moment, I'm plenty willing to speculate (and pontificate!) wildly. The going rate for mana, before Wizarding was introduced, was around 1000 gold per mana. The price may have decreased slightly, but the wildly-differing prices of Time Warps, aligned Sword2s and Catanas, and the (nigh-nonexistent) perceived value of Wand2s and Wand3s shows that mana does not have a fixed cost. However, given that Nightingspells are rather expensive in a value-per-mana sense, 1000 gold/mana for Nightingspells would be absurdly high. I think around 500 gold per mana would be much closer, and see if there's any demand. You'd be underselling yourself as far as the potential value of a mage is concerned, but you'd be breaking into a fresh new market, which is a plus. The drawback to this sort of business is that you're mainly selling to the wiki-reading subset of Cities, rather than the entire player base, but you can probably still create enough of a demand to make some money. Nidhoggr Sponsored Pentacle

Currently the Cult of Nidhoggr is sponsoring a pentacle near our guild hall. The hall is relatively easy to get to, it's a small jaunt from Windy City to the interior. Or a standing stone teleport. We have many more acles at our disposal. What say the mages of Cities? Would you prefer another one to be started immediately after the first finishes, or would you like to be given a break for questing, say a week or two? --Ade 17:11, 24 February 2008 (GMT)

Actually, I hadn't been attending precisely because I wanted to get out and see the world a little. So, ironically, by electing to decrease the efficiency of my mana gathering, I've prepared myself nicely for a long sit at a Penty.
As such, I abstain from the vote and shall see what the others have to say. S. Mackie 17:00, 26 February 2008 (GMT)

Lava Longevity

Do the lava squares around Fire City change from time to time? Do some squares cool while new ones become lava filled? Or even do the lava squares cycle through cooling and molten stages? I have read of a great treasure buried by a pirate ancestor of mine. Sadly it is under some lava now. TheRealKilgore

The isolated lava squares near Fire City seem to be permanent. Other lava--such as the lava flow formerly in the Great North and the occasional lava bombs that have endangered the Citiezens--cools after a while and can be removed through lava solvents or AP expenditure. However, I don't think there's any cooling lava left anywhere. --Dragon 05:10, 24 February 2008 (GMT)

Breeding Horsies

What's the secret behind breeding horsies? Do you need both horsies in your inventory? I suppose you really need to know the gender, and that's not immediately obvious. --Tiltowait 18:47, 12 February 2008 (GMT)

I don't see any data in BB for these; do they exist in-game anymore? If not, perhaps this could be a replacement? Snare 00:15, 19 January 2008 (GMT)

Party Packs were purchasable a long, long time ago. Then the GLs realized how unique items created a load on the DB, and stopped offering them. At last report, Team Rings cause 'king fiddling when you check on the locations of the other rings. PotatoEngineer 03:57, 19 January 2008 (GMT)
If unique items are that much of a burden, then why are there so many ways to easily create more? Kaos Dragon 07:41, 19 January 2008 (GMT)
I cannot begin to answer that question. There was a time, though, when unique items were new, and the GLs were vaguely considering an AP tax on having many unique items in your inventory. I imagine that either the host was upgraded at some point to handle it, the code was fixed to reduce the degradation due to many unique items, or the GLs decided it wasn't that bad after all. Bound Weapons

I've got all sorts of questions about these things.

  1. Do bound aligned weapons retain their alignment bonus?
Yes. And, yes, it is glorious. Snare 20:07, 11 January 2008 (GMT)
  1. If I bind a weapon against a monster type that has multiple names, will it work with any monster of that type, or will I have to wait until I see that name again?
For Leprichauns and the like; yes, it will work against any variation. For Thieves and Mimics; not really. Make sure your Fire Sword (Large Mimic Bane) is only used against Large Mimics and the same goes for Thieves and Big Thieves.. Snare 20:07, 11 January 2008 (GMT)
  1. What happens when you bind a weapon that can grow, such as leeches and daemonic blades? -Scrumbucket 18:18, 11 January 2008 (GMT)
I'm guessing you lose the "bane" upon upgrade. Binding a Phaser in an attempt to have an unbreakable bound weapon does not work when your Phaser breaks/loses power. Better to just go ahead and upgrade first. Snare 20:07, 11 January 2008 (GMT)
I came out of retirement to test bound spirits once (2006's Christmas present, actually). I'll come back out to do some more testing.
I am happy to report that my cruel blade (lepricawn) works against the beasts however tricksy they get with their spelling. Also, I've just about got enough to buy a daemonic something, and I just picked up an earth sword. With more AP, I'll do more testing.Copperisblue 19:52, 11 January 2008 (GMT)
I can report that I just tested a brand-new furious pirate bane bow against another pirate with a different name and it worked just fine. -Scrumbucket 23:41, 15 January 2008 (GMT)
I remember once having a 18 Gull bane, and it worked on any number of gulls, so anything with number changes like that are fine. Sir Garry 23:40, 16 January 2008 (GMT)

Career Switching Question

When you go back to Master Smith Wayland to become a smith again after you've been a smith before and switched to another class, does it still cost the 2 days worth of AP to change class? --Tiltowait 14:33, 11 January 2008 (GMT)

Yup. You also need to have been a Smith for two weeks (I think) before you can start the Master Smith quest - if you change careers and then switch back, the timer starts again. Andrewsi 14:38, 11 January 2008 (GMT)
Thanks, that's what I needed to know before I inadvertently neglected my pets. --Tiltowait 14:46, 11 January 2008 (GMT)

Shaman Cabinetry

I'm a Shaman. I have a new cabinet. If I were to say, open the cabinet and go about killing things as a Shaman, and then went back to the Duke path at a later point, would the kills still count toward my military rank, or would I need a new cabinet and new kills? I'm assuming that it'll be okay if I started stuffing monsters as a shaman, but I wanted to make sure. --Ade 15:17, 21 December 2007 (GMT)

Oooh. Interesting question. I was a Pvt. Duke before I switched over to Shaman, and I've been killing them left and right; I've got only about eight more to go. I assumed they'd carry over, and what with all the stuffed trophies I've got listed, if it didn't work that way, I'm sure I could count it as a bug.
However, I can't say for sure, and I don't ever really intend to be a Sgt. anyway, so I just don't know. And you've got it even worse, having not started the quest yet. Anybody know the answer to this? S. Mackie 18:44, 21 December 2007 (GMT)
I thought only knights could open a Cabinet. As for collecting trophies as a Shaman, check your info.xml page to see if the kills are being recorded (I imagine they would be). - Isambard 20:13, 21 December 2007 (GMT)
I has to work as a Shaman: dukes were never supposed to get to the alternate ocean, so only mages can kill shrimps. Besides, I did most of my hunting as a Shaman--Solune 22:33, 21 December 2007 (GMT)
Good to know! That said, Dukes can get there via Astral Plain spells on Eye Pods. Eye Pods are clearly for the purchase of spellcasting at convenience of the recipient.
Besides, consider the Kangaroo, and that you need only kill 175 or so. S. Mackie 00:27, 22 December 2007 (GMT)
If you can open the Cabinet, the kills should count. But as has been pointed out, you likely need to be a knight to open it. --Dragon 05:04, 22 December 2007 (GMT)

Cornucopia / Horn of Heimdall

If you convert a cornucopia to a horn, presumably you lose the daily drink / eats, yes? Can you get two cornucopias such that one could be made into a horn and one remain a never-ending fount of goodies? --Tiltowait 18:00, 29 November 2007 (GMT)

Unfortunately not. Actually owning a cornucopia is a far better deal than being able to go to Asgard in my eyes. Flt 20:22, 29 November 2007 (GMT)
I take the opposite stance: easy transport to Brighthelm and Bognor outweighs the random food/drink aspect, but only after you've gotten most of what you want from the Cornucopia. PotatoEngineer 21:21, 29 November 2007 (GMT)
I confess I'm having a hard time parting with my cornucopia. The Powers-That-Be should invent some more wondrous items like this. --Tiltowait 21:34, 29 November 2007 (GMT)
I recommend keeping the Cornucopia until you lose patience with the amount of decaf coffee it oh-so-helpfully provides. Then make the Horn. That way you'll be saying "Good riddance!" instead of being sad. (Well, that's the way it worked for me...) -Scrumbucket 22:17, 29 November 2007 (GMT)
Having converted mine almost instantly (I got one use out of it) upon receiving it so as to increase my travel options as a KOT member, I agree with Scrum. The cornucopia is incredibly awesome except when it isn't. So keep it for quite a while, make good use of it; I almost guarantee you'll get sick of it.

Any Shamans having problems getting Huge Reptiles?

I've had terrible luck with finding Huge Reptiles lately. Not only do about 75% of my Mountain Trail walks not produce a Reptile, but I've burned over 30 time warps trying to generate one; not one time warp has actually done so. Am I simply a victim of the RNG here, or do time warps not work for Huge Reptile generation? PotatoEngineer 09:27, 28 November 2007 (GMT)

Bad luck with the RNG, although, I've been saving my Time Warps for Bunny Island so I can't speak to their effectiveness in spawning Huge Reptiles. I've been hunting the trail for the past two weeks or so and would see you, royan, and macksting around; it's probably just being overhunted. alanda 16:25, 28 November 2007 (GMT)
It is over-hunted, when I did my first pass 2 weeks ago, there was 6 of them. By the way, have you got good tripod hunting strategies?--Solune 20:11, 28 November 2007 (GMT)
It's overhunted, and has been for months. Not only are all the shamans competing with the game spawn rules, they're competing against each other. There's just not enough to go around. I think there's been an average of one person getting enough to become a wizard per week. That's it. Spawning in such a limited area, filled with so hard to kill creatuers means the trail gets clogged with tripods within a day of being cleared. It's why I gave pu shamaning and went back to being a duke, there's just too little opporunity for Huge Lizards. It doesn't seem to have been the best of thought out quests TBH. MrFoo 20:32, 28 November 2007 (GMT)
I've been using Rainbow Blades, combined with Fleeting Strength, to kill Tripods. I had a goodly supply of rainbow blades, but they've since diminished, and I'm down to about 15 in my inventory, and ~70 in my stall. With the current remaining supply, I don't think I can clear the trail, but I could make a good-sized dent. It usually takes about two rainbow blades to kill a tripod, though it can take up to 4 if the RNG hates me. And yes, it does seem that the level 3 wizard quest was designed either for a smaller number of shamans in general, or more towards total frustration. PotatoEngineer 20:36, 28 November 2007 (GMT)
I thought I saw somewhere that colds kill tripods - but then of course you have to be back and forth the the Frozen North lots --naath 20:51, 28 November 2007 (GMT)
For those with Horns of Heimdall, it's actually not a bad deal to do so once and take the rest out with, say, rainbow blades. I just wish their treasure drops were more worthwhile! S. Mackie 06:00, 30 November 2007 (GMT)

those other balls

Well, there are one or two that are good for mages (for dissolving and resurrecting pets) and smiths (building traps) with the bowling ball being probably the most useful. You'd likely make more selling the invitations, though. --Ade 19:49, 27 November 2007 (GMT)

Daedalus Wings

It says that Daedalus Wings can let you fly over water, but they don't. Is this a bug, or old info? Or does it just not work with ocean terrain? - Cameron

Old info. Probably from the days when the North Ocean was navigable without a boat, which was probably a bug. Gonzometro 18:51, 25 November 2007 (GMT)

"Flying" doesn't restrict any terrain access, it gives you access to shallow waters & high mountains (with exceptions) if you didn't have access before. Gas Bill

I'm working on my Master Armourer quest and I'm stuck on the Gas Bill. My reading of the puzzle suggests that one colour total will give a N coordinate and one will give an E coordinate. Trouble is, only one colour (yellow) gives an E coordinate that is not behind the Death Mountains, which are impassible, and I've checked the possible N coordinates with it and... bupkis. Am I missing something, is the puzzle too subtle for me (I've worked it several times), or is it possibly some kind of bug?Dendrast 03:47, 15 November 2007 (GMT)

I'm kinda guessing here, but are you forgetting the elemental colors? You sound like you aren't certain which color is which direction. Random4518 04:04, 15 November 2007 (GMT)
The text accompanying the image should tell you which color goes with which coordinate. Also, it might be S instead of N (but it should tell you that). --Dragon 04:11, 15 November 2007 (GMT)
That's just the thing - all of the colours (except Yellow), give too high a value, placing them East of the impassible (Death) mountains. The values I got were: Yellow 29, Green 57, Red 49, & Blue 35. There is no next step in the quest at 29E X 35N, 49N, or 57N. All other combonations are on the other side of the impassible (Death) mountains, it doesn't matter what colour indicates what direction. (Just for reference, The Death mountains occupy the file 35E in this area.)Dendrast 02:19, 16 November 2007 (GMT)
The Gas Bill tells you exactly which colors/elements give which coordinates. You shouldn't be trying multiple possible locations, there's only one. Random4518 02:37, 16 November 2007 (GMT)
Just to make things clear, that's the bit which says "Sethlans always considered earth as a summation of all things easterly and water for the south". Darksatanic 10:04, 16 November 2007 (GMT)
OK - Earth is E, earth is green, green's value is 57, E57 is WELL behind Death mountains.

Giant's Garden

So in a desparate attempt to grow some plums one of my alts has ended up in cloudland (again), and while I am happy enough to kill stuff I was just wondering if anyone knew... would planting beans in the ground of the castle prevent me from groing a bean stalk, or are bean stalks high-rise affairs? ford_prefect 20:34, 14 November 2007 (GMT)

I seem to recall a discussion on IRC to the effect that if you can, it would be a very bad idea. As I understood it, the game remembers only one instance of the location from which the beanstalk grew, not an instance for each recursion of beanstalk. The scenario, speculatively, goes something like this: You grow a beanstalk in a nice field by the road and climb. You arrive in Cloudland. You navigate to a nice spot near the Castle, and grow another beanstalk and climb. You arrive in Cloudland. You climb down the beanstalk. You're back in Cloudland, near the Castle. You climb down the beanstalk. You're again back in Cloudland, near the Castle; not, as expected, back in the nice field by the side of the road. Permanently. -- Sertularian 22:55, 14 November 2007 (GMT)
Or until you Talisman out, of course. -Stelio 23:09, 14 November 2007 (GMT)

Oh whale where art thou?

I'm desperate and sick of looking. Where are the whales? Are they hiding? Am I missing something? Have they gone extinct because of the global warming? Or it's just my bad luck? I can't remember last time I saw a whale, really.. (: Tarot deck does not show them, so I keep wandering along Oz coastline and all possible bridges in the ocean hoping to see it floating around somewhere and nothing.. Agzu 15:08, 7 November 2007 (GMT)

If the Tarot Deck doesn't show any whale there is currently none in the game. AFAIK a whale spawns every time one was killed, but some conditions can prevent this. You'll probably have to wait either until one spawns or until the great lords notice and do that for you. Flt 15:50, 7 November 2007 (GMT)
From what I recall, whales usually spawn somewhere in the vast expanse between the southern isles and the entrance to R'1yeh. If one does spawn, you're in for quite a boat ride to get to it. You must remember that monster spawning isn't rolled for unless someone is in the vicinity. Therefore, it's possible that if you start searching the whales' usual haunts, you will find one in the process, even if the tarot says none exists. Gonzometro 18:26, 7 November 2007 (GMT)
IIRC whales follow the "semi-unique" spawning rules, so they're probably extinct until a GL spawns more. --Dragon 02:00, 8 November 2007 (GMT)
Thank you everyone for that information (: And, last time I saw whale (long long long time ago) it was near Oz coastline, so I don't think they only spawn in the vast area. That of course could have change, but still.. (: Agzu 10:04, 8 November 2007 (GMT)

Can we safely say that whatever event the emissary was anouncing has happened ? And wonder which one it was ?--Solune 18:34, 5 November 2007 (GMT)
Well they presaged the four underground quests, surely? Four players were then chosen to receive pieces of torn parchment with clues on which when solved indicated stuff about the underground quests:
Whence the flyd, the plyges, the o'erthrown, the trouth of the belowe wyl be discoved.
The serface will yeeld to beneef. The myf, the stench, the beest, the roq wyl be uncovd.
Thee who throe sacrifys prevail, who throe the rings of nyn travail.
Wyl at th'infyrnal thron be greet'd, for there th'yvil one be seat'd.
The implication being that after completing all four underground altars, one would be transported to the fifth underground area: the Nine Circles of Hell itself, there to meet the very Devil incarnate! Good stuff. :-) -Stelio 19:16, 6 November 2007 (GMT) (see also)
There was an auction for some part of the riddle (god ****ing **** I suck at riddles) apparently important to its completion. The completion of the riddle, I mean. There was a big deal about not letting anybody else know what it all meant because of apparent previous disinterest. Anyway, point is that I'm asking, do we know enough collectively, or has information-hoarding killed that? S. Mackie 03:07, 8 November 2007 (GMT)
The fourth piece of the puzzle was eventually revealed, yielding the full poem above. The Emissary's messages in general refer to the underground quests, and the poem hints at what will happen when all four altars are activated. I don't think we (collectively) know much more than that. I agree with Stelio that the poem above, as well as the translation of the torn parchment, suggest a portal to hell. --Dragon 03:49, 8 November 2007 (GMT)

Mana

Can non-wizards possess mana? I suppose there are two cases: 1) Can someone who has never been a wizard have mana? 2) Can someone who has converted back from being a wizard have mana? A related question: Does this mean only wizards can create antidotes from the Blue Flower quest? --Tiltowait 12:57, 31 October 2007 (GMT)

Sure you can. A common way would be to break a magic-good, or an enchanted bling (you might have to complete the goodyear pimp quest first). And when you have mana, you can make any item that uses mana (ex: you can enchant blings)--Solune 13:05, 31 October 2007 (GMT)
You also get mana from some mixology drinks. -- X-Himy 14:21, 31 October 2007 (GMT)
But non-wizards don't regenerate mana, correct? --Tiltowait 14:19, 31 October 2007 (GMT)
To be more specific, wizards don't REgenerate mana either, they gain Mana over time (e.g. 1 mana every 8 hours for shamans) without an upper bound (unlike HP or AP). Mana is but another meta item (similar to Issues, Degrees...) and is used up as are other ressources. So if a non-wizard had 10 mana and used those up to enchant a bling or so, he/she will not get it back over time. Flt 14:38, 31 October 2007 (GMT)
You can also dig out Mana Veins in the Mines. Dukes can do some stuff with the Mana they aquire, if I hold some I get the option to make a Relic from 4 Mana and 10 Bones, or a Dose of Antidote from 1 Mana ans 2 Blue Flowers.--Hamelin 16:09, 31 October 2007 (GMT)

Headhunters

Looking over the old entries here here and here on headhunters, I haven't been able to glean any clues on how to stop them, just what they do and what not to try. What am I missing? Have pity on a poor soul trapped in the wild jungles of Interior Oz... --Tiltowait 12:49, 31 October 2007 (GMT)

Only known way to stop a headhunter is to inflict an overwhelming amount of damage (2320 total). I find Furious Bows work well for them. -- Thog 15:24, 31 October 2007 (GMT)
that would be 2420 dmg actually, although I don't get any of those references--Solune 17:19, 31 October 2007 (GMT)
As for the references, headhunters are at least partially a reference to a song. The music video features eggs prominently, the song is by Front 242 (hence their HP), etc., which is where a lot of ideas came from. But yes, there's no known "secret" to killing them--just inflict a lot of damage quickly. A Furious Bow, Phaser, or other high-damage weapon works reasonably well for a Sgt. Duke. Mages can use damage-dealing spells. Armourers are pretty much screwed, although as Random mentioned you can align them if you just need to get by. --Dragon 01:27, 1 November 2007 (GMT)
Are you trying to kill them, or just get past them? If you only want to get past, I'm pretty sure you can hit them with a wand, change them to your alignment, and slip past (like most monsters). Random4518 17:24, 31 October 2007 (GMT)

Optimizing Hard Knocks efforts as a Wizard: Crocodile

Are there duck-billed crocodiles?
Any suggestions on finding decent mutant crocodiles in the NW tunnels? I run into a few, but never any really significantly mutated ones (mutant giant, etc.) nor in the big pool of the boss fight. My last foray was nearly useless for HK purposes. Thoughts? S. Mackie 08:52, 19 October 2007 (BST)

They're there. If you want scales, I would suggest clearing the pool. Wait for it to fill back up, clear, rinse, repeat. You can get some good hauls. I have.density 14:53, 19 October 2007 (BST)
Keen. Any other suggestions out there for getting crocodile scales? Assume I'm not buying them. S. Mackie 16:32, 19 October 2007 (BST)
Well, you could crack a Marwell Talisman, it would give you a full set of HKC with every respawn. I think the rate there is fairly high, but don't quote me on that. I don't think this would be the best method, though. I think you would be better looking in the dark with a big weapon, and a few doses of antidote just incase. Be careful, they hit hard.density 17:07, 19 October 2007 (BST)
Antidote? For Triffids, perhaps? I find they're easier to kill with a Harmonica and my Kat. S. Mackie 18:08, 19 October 2007 (BST)
The trick, of course, is that most of the high-powered players like the NE Tunnels, too, so the pool of the mountain king is sometimes cleared out when you arrive. It doesn't help in the least that respawn times in that area are rumored to be about 2 days. PotatoEngineer 21:00, 19 October 2007 (BST)
That would be a negatron on the duck-billed crocs. Large creatures don't seem inclined to evolve duck-bills. Its really too bad; duck-billed dragons would be humorous. Gonzometro 22:17, 19 October 2007 (BST)

Tribble rate of reproduction in OZ

Has anyone else noticed that tribbles don't do well in OZ? They still multiply, but not at their typical rate. I thought at first it was a change in the number of different types of food items I was carrying, but I think I've discredited that idea. I think it's just that tribbles don't reproduce well in OZ. Loading eyepods with astral plane spell will likely still work -- occasionally. I did this for the military cabinet quest (preloaded them as a shaman before switching to Duke to do the quest). Then I played them as a Duke to get to the alternate ocean. hendsch 14:06, 17 September 2007 (BST)
Hey good idea ! I didn't think about it--Solune 14:22, 17 September 2007 (BST)

Gorgon Heads

Do Gorgon Heads wear out if all you're doing is making cheese slices? The wiki is a bit vague on this topic --Tiltowait 17:16, 14 September 2007 (BST)

No, they don't. Make all you want. PotatoEngineer 17:33, 14 September 2007 (BST)

Snowballs

Are the Great Lords immune to snowballs now? I've thrown snowballs at GL Boris and GL Ruthven, but missed every time; commoners get hit just fine. Misosumo 18:48, 7 September 2007 (BST)

Yes. From IRC, just today:
<JAD> AndyLandy: Didn't he throw poo at you as well?
<AndyLandy> JAD: at GL Andrew, then asked why I didn't get stinky
<Kaos_Dragon> You don't get stinky?
<AndyLandy> No
<JAD> GLs don't stink
<AndyLandy> If you try snowballing a GL, it'll say "They ducked"
<Harry> really? haha
<Kaos_Dragon> lol
<JAD> hmmm, is that new?
<AndyLandy> It's Boris' doing
<AndyLandy> He fixed the stinkiness too

<Kaos_Dragon> You throw a snowball at Great Lord Andrew, but you miss.

Stall Permits

I want to upgrade my stall from the current limit of 6 items to a new limit of 11 items. I'm guessing there's no direct way to do so (and the wiki is pretty silent on the subject). That means I should shut down my old store and use a new permit to set up a new stall in the same spot. But is there a defect that prevents someone from doing so? There's a cryptic reference to it on the Stall page under Warnings. Something about not being able to reopen your stall if you close it. What gives? --Tiltowait 15:05, 6 September 2007 (BST)

At one point, the game sometimes forgot if you'd closed a stall - leading to "You can only have one stall open" errors when you tried to reopen it. This was either fixed or TPTB figured out a way to reset people who got into this state, as those of us stuck in that state were fixed. -- Thog 15:20, 6 September 2007 (BST)
May I suggest that you upgrade straight to the 16-item stall instead? I didn't realize, when I opened my mall store, that this would be the only store I'm ever allowed to have. So you might as well use the biggest permit. --Greycat 16:25, 6 September 2007 (BST)
Also note that if your current stall is not in the mall, and it's been around a long time, it may not be possible to re-open it on the same location. MrFoo 17:23, 6 September 2007 (BST)
The 16-item permits are pretty cheap, too. Check Mallr and Citiesberg. PotatoEngineer 03:06, 7 September 2007 (BST)
Yeah, Grey & 'Tater, that's not a bad idea. --Tiltowait 13:20, 7 September 2007 (BST)
One more question - When closing it, I presume you have to completely clear out all merchandise or you lose it? --Tiltowait 13:20, 7 September 2007 (BST)
yes indeed. I once lost all my possessions in a vault accident. That's why they added a checkbox to the closing procedure--Solune 20:17, 7 September 2007 (BST)

Plot Bunny generation

Plot Bunnies don't seem to generate from time warps and seem to pop up pretty rarely. Anyone know what's going on?

I was able to spawn them from warps a couple of weeks ago, but I was averaging one plot bunny per 5 warps with the occasional rabbit thrown in. There may be different spawning rules on the different islands, I was on Bunny Point. hendsch 21:55, 28 August 2007 (BST)
Thanks, maybe I just had an unlucky streak I used 7 warps and gave up. Hbookbinder

Emptying a Vault

Anyone know if there's a way to empty a vault other than pulling out each individual set of items one at a time? I've heard that closing it destroys the contents, but there's no "empty" option. -- Thog 16:05, 24 August 2007 (BST)

Dream Sword

Just picked a dream sword up off a loucee, what is it and what does it do? There was one for sale at the southern markets for 35000gp. I'm out of ap right now, want to experiment but the market price suggests it is quite valuable and i'm scared of wasting it. --ketchup 11:58, 09 August 2007 (BST)

What does the base damage and to hit look like? Maybe it's like a Rainbow Blade. Perhaps it deals extra damage/only works when you're standing on Dreamtime terrain in Oz? --Ade 13:12, 9 August 2007 (BST)
It was reported on IRC that it works sort of like a rainbow sword. The damage dealt is equal to the sqrt(trippiness). So if you were going to be tripping for the next 400 AP, it would do 20 base damage. I haven't experimented myself.hendsch 13:51, 9 August 2007 (BST)

Seal Fur House of Heyus

I was slaughtering poor baby lambs with my alt around 6E 0S (near the current party) when I noticed this place. It acts as a NPC shop, but only purchases seal pelts for 500 gold. The background is unique. It's a mottled white/grey. Anyone know what's up (presumably Heyus does)? I was disappointed to learn it wasn't an actual house, I've been gunning for those for quite sometime. --Ade 21:46, 31 July 2007 (BST)

Heyus sold his soul to The Great Lords for this. (Remember how the XML contest had an in-game soul as the prize? That was Heyus's) -- Thog 21:48, 31 July 2007 (BST)

I've done something foolish

I became a 'Sir' today. By accident. I don't want to be a 'Sir'. It goes against my anarchist tendencies. Is there anything I can do to recant? Thanks in advance Schnorrer 19:55, 30 July 2007 (BST)

Go become an Armourer and then do nothing with your new career? -- Thog 20:48, 30 July 2007 (BST)
You can always drop by on IRC and ask one of the GLs or the 'King to revert your status. --Bubba_the_Shy 23:24, 30 July 2007 (BST)
An anarchist knelt before the king? For shame! PotatoEngineer 00:34, 31 July 2007 (BST)
Not a solution of course, but a suggestion. Since you enjoy performance art and the like, perhaps you should travel the magic path? There are some spells you'd probably get a kick out of, like magic display, fungal spray, etc. --Ade 20:22, 31 July 2007 (BST)

Beaches, Moo Moo

Why hello there. I've recently set sail for Moo Moo island, but upon reviewing this map it seems Moo Moo lacks a beach to land on. I was under the impression that one could only land on a beach? If so, how would I go about getting there? --Ade 16:43, 22 July 2007 (BST)

There is another way to make landfall; it involves flying. --BlaisedeC 21:01, 22 July 2007 (BST)
I wish I knew I needed an airship before spending 200 AP to get this far. --Ade 21:52, 22 July 2007 (BST)
You don't need an airship to fly. - Isambard 21:54, 22 July 2007 (BST)
Just to spell it out: Winged boots. Or a hop/skip spell should work. hendsch 15:04, 23 July 2007 (BST)
Thank you, Hendsch. I was going to post "Okay. I wish I knew I'd needed an airship/winged boots/pair of wings/hop spell before I spent 200 AP to get this far." but I didn't want to be rude. I had an idea about hop working, but luckily my good friend who is hanging out in space sent me a couple of pairs of wings via a nice little wormhole. I appreciate the straight forward answer, man. --Ade 16:27, 23 July 2007 (BST)
Actually I think daedalus wings are enough, and they are much more common--Solune 18:08, 23 July 2007 (BST)

Music

I've been practising really hard but I still don't 'rock'... I'm interested to know if anyone keeps track of how many practices are needed to get to each stage and how much failing to practice on one day will set you back and other such things. I don't know if my musical competence is in info.xml but neither Questr not 4cities is interpreting it if it is so maybe it isn't. Is anyone tracking this? --naath 12:19, 20 July 2007 (BST)

I know I never did, so I really can't help. I can say that plugging away, even once every other day, will still get you to Rock. This leads me to believe that advancement is more pass-fail than time-based; eventually, I figure you reach a certain number of practices as your skill level and then you advance to the next. At that point, you rock until you get out of practice.
All wild speculation, I assure you. S. Mackie 19:22, 20 July 2007 (BST)
Once you rock, simply being "out of practice" (where it costs 20AP to practice again) is not enough to lose your skill. These days, I practice about once every week or two, it often costs me 20AP, and I still rock. (It's possible, of course, that I am losing skill, but that I'm simply not losing enough to drop below "rock.") PotatoEngineer 01:36, 21 July 2007 (BST)
Good to know! I gots to stop stressing over this sort of thing. S. Mackie 03:14, 21 July 2007 (BST)

Light Wands

There must be a downside. Do they break? Does using them too often make hairy grow in funny places? I must know! --Tiltowait 13:22, 19 July 2007 (BST)

They break pretty quickly, I think mine only got about 4 uses out of it :( Also, unless you have some source of blinding illumination (a flash gun for example) you can only really use it once in a row because the first one sucks up all the light rendering it powerless. They are very cool though :) Spugmeistress 15:11, 19 July 2007 (BST)
It's possible to get it to do thousands of damage if you know how... Kaos Dragon 17:57, 19 July 2007 (BST)
Mine is broken now, but maybe using one immediately after a flash gun would do mega damage? Katerwaul 12:28, 20 July 2007 (BST)
You get (iirc) +400 damage per illumination spell.
Most monsters are no match for a properly used Light Wand. -- Sertularian 13:49, 21 July 2007 (BST)
Are they random drops like Merz Bows and the like, or are they found more on certain creatures? As a shaman I am... very interested in this. --Ade 13:38, 22 July 2007 (BST)

Lava - how permanent?

I have a Treasure Map, but it points me to an inaccessible Lava square. Is there any chance that will become passable terrain or should I just discard the map? --BlaisedeC 18:52, 18 July 2007 (BST)

I know there's Lava solvent available. Does that work on hot lava, or just the cooling stuff? -- Thog 19:17, 18 July 2007 (BST)
Just the cooling; the question is under what circumstances hot lava can cool. --BlaisedeC 19:28, 18 July 2007 (BST)
The lava around fire city isn't going to cool. It's been around for months, and normal lava only takes a couple days to cool. Kaos Dragon 19:32, 18 July 2007 (BST)
Discard it to me. I'm at the Pentacle right now, and have started a collection. S. Mackie 03:01, 19 July 2007 (BST)
Technically, lava solvent does work on hot lava as well, but in order to use it you have to be standing on the square in the first place--and since the lava squares are inaccessible, having the solvent doesn't help. I agree with the others--the lava is inaccessible for the foreseeable future, but there's really no reason to discard it--put it in a bag or give it to Mackie or something, just in case there's eventually some event that makes the lava go away. --Dragon 03:21, 19 July 2007 (BST)

Rules for Changing Careers

Are there any limits in changing careers? I can find references for how, but it's pretty vague about whether you can just keep switching as much as you like. Any one have experience in this area? --Tiltowait 14:57, 16 July 2007 (BST)

I have no experience here, but each career switch takes 2 days' AP. Bartering for the occasional item or favor from other players is far more productive than doing all of the work yourself, considering the AP cost. PotatoEngineer 15:10, 16 July 2007 (BST)
It's also worth mentioning that that seems to be a hard and fast limit - certain things that cut AP costs (like cocktails) don't work for class changes a anymore -- Thog 16:20, 16 July 2007 (BST)
No known limits. Personally I've gone from Duke->Apprentice->Duke->Smith->Shaman because I only play one character and wanted to try the other career quests. I think of myself as a Shaman that moonlights. hendsch 16:26, 16 July 2007 (BST)
Worth noting though that you'll need to present Tim with another XXXX to get back into magic business. --Jpv 17:26, 16 July 2007 (BST)
Another question -- Do you retain your previous progression when bouncing between classes? For example, Duke > Smith > Armourer > Duke > Armourer or Duke > Smith > Armourer > Knight > Smith? --Tiltowait 17:44, 16 July 2007 (BST)
You keep your progression; otherwise I would never had changed--Solune 18:13, 16 July 2007 (BST)
Off topic, if most Sgt. Dukes were stripped of their titles and ranks, I'll bet between inventory and general capabilities they'd be able to hit Duke again pretty fast. Thankfully, the game never requires us to regress that way. S. Mackie 19:11, 16 July 2007 (BST)
Anyone want to volunteer for the experiment? :) Darksatanic 19:48, 16 July 2007 (BST)
Actually, Belkar has nothing to do. I'd be happy to volunteer him :-) -- Thog 20:16, 16 July 2007 (BST)
Yeah, I didn't think it would be hard to hit Duke again, but Armourer would be a hassle. --Tiltowait 21:11, 16 July 2007 (BST)
Bah, Armourer would be trivial. Now Master Armourer, that would be a pain. --BlaisedeC 21:28, 16 July 2007 (BST)

Cat

I ran across a Cat in the interior jungle today. Every time I try to attack it, it "runs and hides," turning into a Scaredy Cat and taking 0 damage. The Scaredy Cat is un-attackable even with 'angry' weapons. After a few seconds it reverts to a Cat. So far, only my goldfish has been able to damage it & I've tried:

  • Pint of Milk
  • Pint of Cream
  • Crispy Shredded Duck Bit
  • Sheep Heart
  • Cod
  • Lion Fish
  • Eel
  • Flying Fish
  • Ball of Wool
  • Silver Puzzle Box
  • Catana
  • Martial Arts
  • Fashion
    • Clobber
    • Cute
    • Goth
    • Industrial
    • Kinky
    • Military
    • Pimp
    • Punk
  • Brave Star
  • Bottle of Vodka
  • Mug of Ale
  • Short String
  • String
  • Long String
  • Gorgan-zola Cheese Slice
  • Head of Gorgan (turned to stone, but not dead)

all to no perceivable advantage. Any hints or suggestions? Gonzometro 01:17, 22 June 2007 (BST)

If it turns into a scaredy cat maybe it needs some courage. Dutch courage ie booze? Or try hitting it with a brave star.Katerwaul 10:13, 22 June 2007 (BST)
Try coaxing it out with a ball of wool, or strings of various lengths or any other cat toy like item? Spacer one 10:47, 22 June 2007 (BST)
If everything fails, you could try to assail it with a Catapult or feed it a piece of cheese. Flt 11:21, 22 June 2007 (BST)
I've added to the list. I couldn't get my Vorpal Blade to go Snicker-Snack, but I wouldn't be surprised if it had no effect. I'm just going to wait until someone discovers catnip. Gonzometro 16:08, 22 June 2007 (BST)

Flt and I believe we have discovered the secret. The Cat can only be damaged if it is neutral alignment or your alignment. And then only by Fists, Poke of Death, and Brunch Punch (probably only when not brunch.) It seems the Cat only wants a fair fight . . . doesn't drop anything. Gonzometro 17:01, 22 June 2007 (BST)

Also, goldfish work, but apparently no other pets do.Gonzometro 17:05, 22 June 2007 (BST)

With the additional help of dragon we found the solution. It can only be damaged by weapons (or things) that deal less than 10 (up to 10?) points of damage. Bigger weapons scare it and it will run away. Flt 17:08, 22 June 2007 (BST)

attacking it whilst it was anti-aligned with my fists which do 5 damage (10 because of the alignment) made it run - so I guess strictly less than 10. --naath 17:44, 22 June 2007 (BST)
Confirmed! I beat the thing to death with a spatula. Any weapon with a base of 1 will do the trick --Gretchin 13:09, 23 June 2007 (BST)
Has anyone tried giving one a tonic? It might make it 'catatonic' Chlamydia 12:45, 24 June 2007 (BST)
I had no problem doing one in with a sling. I'm currently a smith, so it was hitting 4 with each of its attacks. Of course, you need enough room to sling a cat. I wasn't paying attention very carefully, but i think I got a bit of chump change off it (a few GP), as well as all my rocks off the pussy. Dendrast 04:02, 27 June 2007 (BST)

Polychromatic Dragon Problem

I spawned a poly dragon next to a mirror monster in order to tick it off the trophy cabinet list. Having hacked away most of its AP and with (I think) only the Air part left I ran out of AP and took a break. Upon logging back on the HP of the PD was listed as ( ) and I could no longer damage it regardless of my alignment. Very frustrating. Any idea why this happened or what I can do about it? Katerwaul 08:57, 21 June 2007 (BST)

Well I've given up. You can find it at 73E 74S if anyone else fancies a try.Katerwaul 11:05, 22 June 2007 (BST)
