Top Line Theory

I was trying to get a little further on decoding hamster DNA and I noticed something interesting. On every hamster that I checked (and I did 17 different DNA strings), the top line of DNA either definitely or probably matches the expressed fashion/other trait. The top line is made up of an allele from either parent, not just one parent's string. I didn't find any exceptions to this rule, although in some cases the alleles aren't 100% confirmed.

If this is the case, then the hamster genes are:

  • BBW - Punk Fashion 1
  • BRW - Industrial Fashion 1
  • RBB - Urban Fashion 1
  • RBV - Quick Paws
  • RBW - Military Fashion 1
  • RVV - Goth Fashion 1
  • RVW - Sharp Teeth
  • VBR - Warm Fur
  • VRB - Kinky Fashion 1
  • VVV - Nervous Disposition
  • WRV - Cute Fashion 1
  • WVV - Pimp Fashion 1

As for RBB and VVV, presumably one is Urban Fashion 1 - we haven't yet seen that fashion expressed so it must be at the bottom of the dominance list. I am not sure what the other would be - all eight fashions would then be accounted for, and we haven't seen any other "extra" traits than our three (Quick Paws, Sharp Teeth, Warm Fur).

It looks like VVV is another trait, Nervous Disposition. My two newest hamsters have it, and it is identified in the same place as the other three traits, right above the unique item #.
Trent has a nervous disposition.
No idea what it does yet. Based on that, RBB is most likely Urban Fashion 1. Caelicoli 02:21, 24 March 2009 (GMT)
Well, nervous disposition has some pretty interesting effects. When attacking a Sparrow Trent suddenly started ticking, and after a few minutes he exploded. Caelicoli 02:20, 25 March 2009 (GMT)
Trent misses the Sparrow.
Trent (Hamster) is ticking!
Trent misses the Sparrow.
You lose a Trent (Hamster).
Trent (Hamster) has exploded!
Did you lose Trent when he exploded? Syagrius 05:15, 11 May 2009 (BST)
Yeah, he was completely gone, just like when a weapon wears out. Caelicoli 05:23, 11 May 2009 (BST)

Warm Fur (VBR) is a very common allele but has only been expressed twice, making it very recessive. (Sharp Teeth and Quick Paws are also low down the list.)

The probable Goth allele (RVV), on the other hand, can only be confirmed twice. Interestingly, Waffles, Rockhawk's Fluff and Jaki/Kiki have an unidentifiable fourth trait; all have RVV in the top line of the first pair (excluding the sex pair). There may be a problem with the way this allele expresses. But two other hamsters have the RVV allele in the same spot and they have the fourth trait of Goth, so if it's a bug it's not a consistent one! -- Rhapsodie 02:55, 4 March 2009 (GMT)

Being unable to sequence, I've been poking at Hamster Genetics the old-fashioned way. Kiki demonstrates 1* Goth consistently - I see no bug (anymore).
(She's Goth/Cute/Military/Industrial. Starting with nothing else giving fashion, she provides 3* Industrial-Military. Hold a Bit of Silver as well and you move to 4* Military-Goth - made from 2* Goth and 1* Military)

Interesting! Waffles is the same - so it looks like for hamsters, Goth falls below both Industrial and Kinky (Waffles' two other genes). Not sure about whether Cute beats Goth or not - don't have the data! (So it could still be a bug or a design feature - but at least now we know!!) Rhapsodie 02:57, 15 May 2009 (BST)

Bout time you got some female offspring ;) Syagrius 07:19, 1 December 2008 (GMT)

And how! It was looking like being the most inbred species in the game for a while there! Rhapsodie 08:02, 1 December 2008 (GMT)

I know it's limited since the current population is so small, but in the name of science, you should try to get one with 2 of the Sharp Teeth gene, to see if the damage is changed and how. Too bad both hamsters with ST are male, it's a really long term thing --Che-T 04:34, 16 December 2008 (GMT)

Agree 100%. I think we need to try and breed one that's all sharp teeth and quick paws and nothing else. Rhapsodie 20:56, 16 December 2008 (GMT)
YEAH!!!! lets make a vorpal hamster xD--Che-T 01:44, 17 December 2008 (GMT)
