Ocean Types

Lately I've noticed two types of ocean squares. I noticed it while heading to Dragon Island via a winged horsie. Some of the squares are a couple of shades lighter than the rest, perhaps signifying deeper or more shallow waters. I was going to say something, but no one else seemed to speak up in the meantime. So I went under the impression that it's just some sort of weird bug in Firefox 3. A good example is 53S on the Brighthelm / Holiday Island bridge. To the west is a square of dark blue ocean and to the east is a square of barely lighter blue. It looks like someone put a white layer over the regular ocean and set opacity to 30 percent. --Ade 12:17, 29 July 2008 (BST)

Hey - I updated the Terrain:Ocean page with the two colours of ocean that I'm aware of. It's the paler, desaturated one that is deeper, which you need to trawl in. Rhapsodie 12:29, 29 July 2008 (BST)
Indeed you did. My apologies for not looking at the recent change page a bit closer. --Ade 12:40, 29 July 2008 (BST)
I just realised my "Hey" came across as stroppy. I meant it as "hullo". Don't apologise - I just thought you might not have seen it! :) Rhapsodie 14:08, 29 July 2008 (BST)
I read somewhere once that 60 - 70 percent of "arguments" in forums were due to the fact that sometimes it's too easy to misread solid text and miss subtle context that would have normally been easily conveyed with body language / tone of voice. I wasn't offended. The thought of you being stroppy didn't even enter my mind. Don't sweat it. --Ade 14:21, 29 July 2008 (BST)

Oyster Fishing

Attempts (24 tries spread across six different squares) to fish in the deep water off the Brighthelm pier by an air aligned character were unsuccessful. This may be the wrath of the RNG, however. - Rhapsodie

You'll know when fishing is likely to be productive. Darksatanic 11:21, 29 July 2008 (BST)
Several dozen attempts at fishing in the waters southeast of Brighthelm yielded a whole lot of nothing. I never even saw any fish, or any mysterious indications of, well, anything. --Greycat 00:08, 2 August 2008 (BST)

I tested a new fishing theory tonight (off the coast of Atlantish, if it matters), which increased my success rate to one in five (from one in ten or more). Every successful attempt I've had so far has been to within one to three attempts on a square. I've never caught one after three attempts, regardless of the amount of repetitions that followed. So the best strategy I've found seems to be fish twice, move on - although more data is required. Rhapsodie 10:36, 30 July 2008 (BST)

Fishie Fishing

It might be a good idea to coordinate who's doing what and where, so we don't overlap.

BortJr: 45E 183S as neutral, but i didn't see the fish. I just got lucky. You feel funny. You gain a Jelly Fish. --BortJr 16:46, 2 August 2008 (BST)

Jellyfish are water. After i found the one by HAVING THE RNG ON MY SIDE, I convinced naath (water) to come have a look. Once she stepped foot on my boat, there were jellyfish: some. --BortJr 16:53, 2 August 2008 (BST)

Ade:

  • As air aligned: Area immediately around the black beach.
  • As air aligned: Area immediately north of Northwich.
  • As air aligned: West and south west of Dragon Island.
  • As water aligned: Further north west of black beach.

Nothing sighted. --Ade 01:09, 1 August 2008 (BST)

Rhapsodie:

  • As fire aligned, I tried south of Brighthelm (61E 52-54S) and Holiday/Cigar Island (60E 76-78S, 59E 82S).
  • I then switched to air and tried southeast of Cigar Island toward Kaos Island (59E 82S, 57E 83S, 57E 85S, 57E 87S, 57E 89S, 58E 89S, 59E 89S, 62E 89S, 67E 89S, 65E 89S).
  • Then, as air, I went to the Coral Reef (29E 200S, 29E 198S, 33E 198S, 36E 198S, 38E 197S, 40E 196S, 41E 194S, 43E 193S, 45E 193S, 47E 192S, 48E 191S, 51E 191S, 53E 191S, 55E 192S, 57E 192S, 58E 193S, 60E 194S, 62E 194S, 64E 193S, 66E 193S, 69E 193S, 70E 192S, 72E 192S, 74E 192S, 74E 190S, 74E 188S, 74E 186S, 74E 184S, 74E 182S, 74E 180S, 74E 178S, 74E 176S, 76E 176S, 78E 176S, 80E 176S, 82E 175S).
  • As air: Off the coast of Crimson City in Oz (83E 213S-198S, 85E 215S-205S, 88E 205S-213S, 90E 213S-221S, 93E 221S-208S), off the coast of Los Laputas and down to the edge of the Crill Sea (86E-99E 284S, 99E-95E 281S, 95E 281S-306S, 98E 306S-297S)
  • As air: Along the area that has tuna, south-east of the coral reef (66E-99E 198S, 82E-99E 196S). Nothing found, of course...
  • As air: Off the coast of Emerald City in Oz (0W-14E 284S, 0W-11E 281S, 0W-9E 278S) then down the western edge of the ocean (1E 278S-297S) and across to the Water Dragon Totem (1E-11E 297S). Finally in a meandering line down to 327S in the Crill Sea. No fish for me.

Sertularian:

  • To sum up our experiments for SCIENCE! today:
Some Tuna sighted (while Earth-aligned) around 49, 199, but nothing else on the entire northern and 3/4 of the southern side of the coral reef while aligned variously as Fire, Earth and Water, and some Air, for different portions of the trip. Proving: "Fish are scarce. But at least Tuna do actually exist." And not much more than that.
  • On a separate occasion, I just cruised the coast off L.L. in Oz (from the Gnu totem to the Angel Totem), while water-aligned, and saw no fish. (Oh, while I'm here, where did I put my L.L. Beans?) -- Sertularian 02:59, 2 August 2008 (BST)
  • Tuna Fish spotted in the vicinity of 37E 200S this date. Jelly Fish near 50E, 180S. -- Sertularian 20:52, 2 August 2008 (BST)

Phw:

  • 500 ocean squares seen as water, no fish whatsoever. 400 in the farsi, 200 around oz and the crill sea.
  • Three sweeps - each further north than the last - were done off the norther coast of Oz, from east to west, with a water and air character on one trawler, both with nets and the passenger with their own trawler. Nothing spotted.

JPV:

  • Around 88E 48S (off the beach south of the Great Desert) to 220S (Oz coast) and 280S to 520S in a straightish line. Air-aligned - no fish encountered.

greycat

  • 82S through 84S swept as fire. The whole latitudes, west to east or east to west. Now doing 85S, east to west. Not a sign of catchable life yet. Greycat 16:46, 10 August 2008 (BST)

Dolphin safe tuna?

I guess the reason earth aligned players can see the tuna is that they can catch it Dolphin safe.

August 11th: Jellyfish

10:16 * Ade|Should_Be_Working might be in the process of catching scurvy..
10:16 royan is now known as royan|shouldAlsoBeWorking
10:18 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> So, what's the plan if we do find something
that isn't a gull? Fish it to extinction or just flag it?
10:18 @greycat> Never having found ANYTHING yet, I'd probably just sit
      there in shock.
10:18 @royan|shouldAlsoBeWorking> could anonye possibly summon royn to the
      pentacle?
10:18 * Ade|Should_Be_Working would be very happy if he got some jellyfish
      out of the deal
10:19 @royan|shouldAlsoBeWorking> mm, caffinated speling.
10:20 @greycat> FISH
10:21 @Harry> woo!
10:21 @Harry> Jelly Fish, in fact!
10:21 @Harry> let's look for the centre of the swarm
10:21 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> ....?
10:21 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> I see... nothing?
10:22 @General_Thog> Are you on a trawler, Ade?
10:22 @General_Thog> On YOUR trawler, that is?
10:22 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> ......genius idea, that.
10:22 = gimlet [me@75.33.78.15] quit (Quit: )
10:24 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Sorry, I'm a trawler nesting virgin. Never
been in a boat in a boat before.
10:24 @General_Thog> What's the plan? Clear or just grab one or two and
      call it a trip?
10:24 @Harry> Camp here and see how quickly it recovers?
10:25 @greycat> Ade could attempt to find the boundaries of the shoal, since
he's the one that can (theoretically) see them.
10:25 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> I can see them now that I've boarded my trawler.
10:26 @Harry> can't you see them?
10:26 * General_Thog avoids the temptation to fish
10:26 @greycat> I can't see them any more, which is consistent.
10:26 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Yes. I can see them.
10:26 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> One or two
10:26 @greycat> *nod*, that's what I saw when you were on my vessel
10:26 @Harry> we could all pick a direction and report back
10:26 @greycat> Only Ade can see.
10:27 @greycat> The rest of us would be useless.
10:27 * Harry displays idiocy once more
10:27 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Whooo. I'm important.
10:27 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> I can search, but I could only one one way.
Two at the most. AP constraints.
10:28 @Harry> I have plenty of AP
10:28 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Did someone fish? They're gone.
10:28 @greycat> I didn't.
10:28 @Harry> Gah!
10:28 @General_Thog> Harry: Only water players can see jelly fish
10:28 @Harry> I could escort Ade, I meant
10:29 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> So how'd that go, you'd unhitch your trawler
from the main and I'd board and redeploy my own?
10:30 @Harry> yeah
10:31 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Okay. If Thog and Mister Cat agree, pick a
direction, let me know when you're ready and I'll jump ship and
      redeploy.
10:32 @General_Thog> Sure. Just let us know when and if we can fish :-)
10:32 @General_Thog> And where
10:32 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> There was one or two here. But it either
moved / died / was fished to extinction by unknown agents.
10:33 @General_Thog> Well, they are supposed to move
10:34 @Harry> ok, get on
10:35 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> On.
10:38 @Harry> ok, I'll try South
10:38 @Harry> no
10:38 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Nothing here.
10:39 @Harry> or here
10:39 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Not a thing
10:39 @Harry> one more, then we'll try other routes
10:39 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Nope
10:39 @Harry> nope. west
10:39 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Nope
10:39 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> No
10:40 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> No
10:40 @Harry> aha!
10:40 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Stop
10:40 @Harry> 59,-95 "one or two"
10:40 @Harry> greycat: where's the mothership?
10:41 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Harry: So.. with me on the boat you can see
      the fish?
10:41 @Harry> yes
10:41 @Harry> going to try 1 west
10:41 @Harry> "a few"
10:42 @Harry> one more:
10:42 @Harry> "a few" again
10:42 @Harry> one more west is shallow.
10:42 @Harry> north?
10:42 @Harry> "some"
10:42 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Yes, then head east, if possible
10:42 @Harry> 57E 94S
10:43 @Harry> gone to "a few" again. moves quick
10:43 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> That was me, sorry. I figured taking one
      wouldn't hurt
10:43 @Harry> Loads!
10:43 @Harry> 55E 92N
10:43 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Since it was more that "some"
10:43 @Harry> seems to be moving NW
10:43 * Harry catches some
10:43 @Harry> got 2
10:44 @Harry> now says "a few"
10:44 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Got 1
10:44 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Now says nothing
10:44 @greycat> thog and I are still at 61E 94S
10:44 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> We obliterated the buggers
10:44 @Alberta> wants to be able to add "n Items" to her sculpture.
10:44 @Harry> may have lost them
10:44 @Alberta> for conspicuous consumption rasons
10:45 @greycat> should I move?
10:45 @Harry> scanning around for them
10:45 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> So, were those "a few" we were chasing the
same ones as "loads!" or altogether different?
10:45 @Harry> I guess the same shoal, but nearer the middle
10:45 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> i.e. if we returned to the previous squares,
would they still be there, you think?
10:46 @Harry> backtracking, can't see them. shoals seem to move fast
10:46 @Harry> maybe all gone :(
10:46 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Which explains why we can't seem to find any
10:47 @Harry> wonder how long it takes for them to grow back
10:47 @Harry> greycat/Thog: shall we rejoin you?
10:48 @Harry> we're at 56,-93 now
10:48 @greycat> I'll go west.
10:48 @General_Thog> Either way. I'm just hanging out atm

10:49 @General_Thog> Someone message me if I should start fishing
10:50 @greycat> He vanished for me shortly after summoning, then reappeared.
10:50 @Harry> Ade: disembark your trawler?
10:50 @Harry> greycat: can you move west, or are you blocked?
10:50 @greycat> blocked
10:51 @greycat> you'll probably need a grappling hook or a pair of winged
boots or something to get onto my vessel
10:51 @Harry> winged boots didn't work
10:51 @greycat> even after disembarking your own?
10:51 @Harry> yep
10:52 @Harry> hook + boots worked
10:53 @Harry> have any of you already sequenced your pwnies?
10:53 @greycat> I'm infantry.
10:53 @General_Thog> No, but I have everything but the coat
10:53 @Harry> enough jellyfish?
10:53 @General_Thog> Yup. Got an Agar Dish, a syringe, and a Horsie
10:54 @General_Thog> Now I just need HoGo training
10:54 @Harry> well I caught 2 jellies but it seems to me that everyone else
should have got some too, but the shoal is lost
10:54 @Incen> The festival is listed as a party, but it surely doesn't
      double your AP regen?
10:55 @AndyLandy> It probably does
10:55 @AndyLandy> if it's a party
10:56 @General_Thog> There are actually four parties at the festival right now
10:56 @Ade|Should_Be_Working> Sorry, that was weird. It kicked me off
10:57 @Harry> I was hoping to get back on greycat's--but odd things
      happened when I tried
10:57 @General_Thog> Harry: By the time I heard, it was gone. No worries.
I'm just providing my eyes, anyhow (now that I have my oyester)
10:58 @General_Thog> So, proving I'm WAY behind, I just saw the mens 4x100
finals in the Olympics yesterday. Wow.
10:59 @greycat> Westward again?
