Has anyone ever mentioned that you are awesome. You always give the most informative and helpful answers to questions about monsters. DWE 19:39, 28 March 2006 (BST)

Thanks. Can I borrow 40 quid? ;) Darksatanic 19:54, 28 March 2006 (BST)
Sure next time I'm in England I'll convert some of my greenbacks and give you a call. DWE 20:49, 28 March 2006 (BST)

Hammered Anvil Logo

hey, apologies if i'm bothering the wrong person,
but one night I got rather hammered and threw together a sloppy little logo for the Hammered Anvil Society:
Image:HammeredAnvil.GIF
the original img from which I created it comes from this page:
http://www.surprisedstaregames.co.uk/CopperTwaddle/card06-HammerAnvil.htm
which coincidentally has a nice little poem about smithing.
Anyway, if you guys wanted to use it for anything feel free. AmishRobots 19:52, 9 June 2007 (BST)

Edit War

In that case, can I at least get an injunction to keep my post on the board until it is sorted? I believe that's fair since I am trying to secure help for an in-game project. If it stays off while we discuss it, they have no reason to compromise. And finally, I have been *trying* to compromise, as you can see from my posts. Billz8 18:18, 17 March 2007 (GMT)

Asking for an injunction and then going ahead with putting your stuff back without waiting for a response is, shall I say, a particularly politic approach. Darksatanic 18:27, 17 March 2007 (GMT)
Haha...aye, perhaps. I just didn't see any other recourse, because if I let it stay down and try to discuss it, I lose, no contest. Billz8 18:30, 17 March 2007 (GMT)
Don't be so sure. I just made Template:Advertisements while the latest bout of the edit war was going on...of course, now that the page is locked, I can't actually put it on the Current Events page. --Dragon 18:41, 17 March 2007 (GMT)

DS, I don't want to start another edit war, so I'm appealing to you instead. Many months ago, when shops first became available, I put notes on several relevant pages telling people about my shop. Sometime in the recent past, another shop owner edited my posts and put his own rival shop there instead. I have no problem with that--I thought it was amusing.

But when I noticed it today and tried to change it back, one of the same few guys that was trying to block my post earlier came back and deleted the whole thing. I think it's unfair, and other than keep editing it back and forth, I can't think of anything to do besides ask for your help. I don't want to get banned, but I don't want to be bullied off the wiki either. What should I do? I can't even edit the "advertisements" sidebar that was added to the CE page because the link doesn't show up for me in either firefox or IE.

Party Hosting

Hey Darksatanic, Deva came to me telling me that her birthday is the 27th of this month, and was wondering if she could have that week for the party. Now I'm gonna give it to her, but this is not the reason I am palantir'in you. Before I jump down to the bottom of the que I was wondering if you would voluntarily move down to allow me to be the following week. From April 23 - 30 to April 30 - May 7. Let me know either on the free party talk page or by palantir or both. -Stien 17:45, 14 March 2007 (GMT)

Database and add-ons

You've been muttering darkly about adding the Range Map and Full Map features for a while, and I'm sure others have ideas about what could be done with mapping data. How amenable might you feel to allowing read access to the database for other tools? Personally, I'd like to quickly throw something together that creates a PNG with one pixel per square for a large-scale coverage map (more of a picture than a map - not much use for navigation but would show where holes are). jmb 12:40, 6 March 2006 (GMT)

There's already an (off-line) generator of overview maps written in python.
Ooh! Does that mean a 1-pixel map is available somewhere that I've missed? jmb
  • Are the larger scale maps expected to be done soon anyway?
It's mostly a matter of when I can get round to doing the coding. I'm also waiting for a design for the page structure from MikeJ, who's much better at decent HTML than I am.
  • Do you have a feel (or figures) for how much load the mapper is currently taking on the server, and do you fear that other tools might be detrimental?
  • I'm also thinking that client apps can do some caching to reduce load
The server load for the mapper is minimal -- it's hosted on my home web server (a VIA C3-2), on the wrong end of an ADSL connection, and I barely notice any load or bandwidth loss. If people start hitting the server lots, I may have to move it or restrict it, but at current levels of usage, I don't think that's going to be an issue.
  • How proprietorial do you feel about the Collected Works?
I don't want to give people direct access to the PostgreSQL database, for security reasons. However, I have no objections to making the data available in machine-readable form. One thing I want to add is a generic query tool, so that people who want to build value-added tools on the DSS mapper can get the data out easily. Say, some kind of XML-based HTTP query/response thing.
The source code to the mapper is freely available via svn and the web, at my svn repo. If you want to write extensions or additional features to the mapper, I'm quite happy to consider patches -- my email is at the top of all the source files.
I can understand entirely about your security concerns; I'd feel the same, though with some care I'd be fairly confident of setting up "secure enough" db access myself. On a machine I didn't value :)
A web service sounds like a great way to go to provide the data to others. It does though sound like a development project in its own right, unless it's easily constructed from drop-in components.
Actually, almost all of the structures are in place to do it already. There's some awkward corners in there that I need to look at and refactor -- I think I've got at least one layer of indirection too many in the data rendering structures now that I've put the XSLT filters on it to generate the pages.
I was thinking of short-term and easy mechanisms like a pg_dump output that could be used to get started on compatible add-ons; without some such sample set it would be harder to design and test extensions and features.
Contributing back is of course laudable and I'd hope people would offer up anything they construct. Go community projects. jmb 00:47, 7 March 2006 (GMT)
I'm doing a load of admin on the database right now. When I've got it in some kind of better shape (a day or two, probably), I'll do a dump and send you a copy by mail. Let me know your mail address (on IRC is probably easiest). Darksatanic 12:24, 7 March 2006 (GMT)

Selene

Hello. Just to ask if the name Selene refers to the specific type of eclipse? On a vaguely related note there is a lunar eclipse tonight in good old blighty. Theendisnigh 17:35, 2 March 2007 (GMT)

No, it's a reference to Underworld. It's also the name of my main desktop computer at home. And I did know about the eclipse, but since it's currently piddling with rain, I doubt I'll be seeing it. :( Darksatanic 18:46, 2 March 2007 (GMT)
Unless I'm mistaken, the eclipse is tomorrow, you still have a chance--Solune 23:22, 2 March 2007 (GMT)
Ooh, thanks. I haven't seen a Lunar eclipse in about 15 years. From memory, they're not very spectacular. :) Darksatanic 11:52, 3 March 2007 (GMT)
Ahh Kate Beckinsale's very shiny bottom. I should have gotten that. The moon turning interesting colours would have been, well, interesting but it was overcast here too.Theendisnigh 11:58, 5 March 2007 (GMT)

Records

Hey, if you're still looking for records, I'm more than happy to sell you mine. Thog has 1, Elan has 2, and Belkar has 4. If this works, let me know... -- Thog 17:03, 18 April 2007 (BST)

In an ideal world, I'd like a Tank (and would even throw in more with the 4 records to make it an even trade). However, I seriously doubt you have one to spare, so cash is fine - you had mentioned 10K/per? -- Belkar 19:21, 19 April 2007 (BST)

Sounds good to me. Only catch is, I won't be logged in for a few hours. Do you want me to just give you a heads up when I get there, or are you just going to be hanging out there anyways? -- Belkar 20:19, 19 April 2007 (BST)
I should be there around 11:00 PM game time, if that works for you -- Belkar 20:37, 19 April 2007 (BST)
Sorry for the no-show. I apparently mistranslated the time zone difference. Anyhow, I'll hang out at the trading post overnight. Figure I should be awake to do the trade around 8:00 AM EDT/1:00 PM game time. -- Belkar 00:56, 20 April 2007 (BST)

I've got 3 Records if you'd like them. I'm at the party where you are at the moment. I'll check for a response before I go to work in the morning (probably about 7am) and if you've got this message in time and you let me know, I'll scoot on over to the nearby Stocks (3E 92N) where you'll hopefully be waiting, and dump the Records into your inventory. :-) -Stelio 01:05, 20 April 2007 (BST)

I'll check again this evening after work. Some time aroung 6pm? :-D -Stelio 07:42, 20 April 2007 (BST)

Hello! I've got one record left over from... not getting 7 more! So let me know if you still need a record for the upcoming party. Verckel 14:45, 22 April 2007 (GMT)

Bars

Just saw your message on my user page. If you can generate a new set of bars for me, I'd appreciate it - if it were anywhere but the ocean, I'd take my chances, but that's hundreds of AP wasted if I go to the wrong solution. Thanks! -- Durkon 17:21, 15 June 2007 (BST)

Hammered Anvil Society Initiation on Friday

This is a friendly reminder in case you didn't already read it on the HAS page:

The next Guild Initiation will take place on Friday, 24 August at 1:00 PM game time.

All members must be present to initiate a new member, so all current HAS members as well as those wishing to be initiated into the formal Guild should be present at the Guild Temple at that time.

Fighting Wiki Spam

I recommend using the plugin on Captcha. It will stop automatic spam bots from registering, and slow down manual spammers. Media wiki has a few ways to stop spam, with one that uses the SpamBlacklist extension. Hopefully that will help reduce the instances of spam. --Vainglory 01:12, 25 August 2007 (BST)

I strongly dislike captchas (I find them very difficult to get right). Also, sadly, SpamBlacklist won't work on this version of MediaWiki. The main thing limiting our anti-spam efforts is that the people willing to work on it (me, mostly) don't have access to the wiki configuration. Darksatanic 12:24, 25 August 2007 (BST)
Well, for the immediate problem, you might want to look at Special:Listusers as there are some "interesting" names on there (check the 'Fr's). For blocking future spammers, you could then create a .htaccess file (if you don't already have one) and add the following:
SetEnvIf User-Agent ^$ spammer=yes # block blank user agents
Order allow,deny
allow from all
deny from env=spammer

This will return a 403 Forbidden error to any robot connecting with a blank user agent. This won't stop your regular users, as very rarely do legitimate users have a blank user agent. If you want to return a custom 403 page, you'll need it at a separate domain or subdomain (otherwise they'll just get another 403). Just add the following below those lines:

ErrorDocument 403 http://(your own seperate domain)/403.html

Here's an example of a custom 403 page for the spammers. That's at least a first line of defense. --Vainglory 14:34, 27 August 2007 (BST)

Arms Cost Calculator

Great tool! However, it looks like the Custom Weapon bug which didn't reduce smithing costs for negative to-hit weapons has been fixed but the Arms Cost Calculator doesn't reflect the change. Snare 05:10, 29 August 2007 (BST)

Antdos replies...

Thanks :) I got sufficiently annoyed with having to remember what stuff was near other stuff :) Ant 23:05, 21 September 2007 (BST)

So I've seen :( I've left a message for PotatoEngineer, who I hope will be able to assist in finding a solution. Anyway, I'll have a look when my niece has gone home :)

Phw

Hey - was going to do a run to Oz to exercise Sigmund Freud (my hate of mothers) and have a Horsie for breeding. Not sure what sex (s)he is yet - how do you tell? Phw 00:53, 24 September 2007 (BST)

Do you need a hand with the tripod? Don't want your horsie to starve! Phw 11:58, 24 September 2007 (BST)

Spacer

Thanks for touching up my page like that...I am not exactly sure how to create that white box on so much text. Spacer one

I am very ashamed and sorry for flooding wiki, somehow by brain stopped functioning at that time, I completely forgot about 'recent changes' page! ): I promise not to do that again Agzu 12:21, 22 October 2007 (BST)

harvestbird

Is Selene looking to breed horsies? I have Beata, a winged horsie of as-yet-undetermined gender whom I would like to use at stud, or as dam, depending on which way (s)he swings. (I am a dog breeder IRL, but have no idea if the dog terms can be used for imaginary horsies as well.) harvestbird 05:51, 30 October 2007 (GMT)

Wish List 2008

I noticed Elseware came up with a special present for those what chose the ability to see invisible intrinsically. It got me to thinking, there's See Monster HP, See Invisible Monsters, and... well. What I'd really like, and I've never cannibalized a corpse that I can recall, is the ability to see corpses. As per the Emerald stuff.
The intention, purely, is to do my job better. See Monster HP would be helpful in finding offending beasts, but See Killer Monsters would allow me to be ever-vigilant in a whole different way. 08:31, 6 January 2008 (GMT)

Horsie Matings

You mentioned on IRC that Shergar might be around to try and determine what sex shaggy is. If you are around I can come and find you after lunch when I have my AP back. Thank you ford_prefect 13:18, 25 February 2008 (GMT)
