The wiki is an indispensable resource for Cities players, but like many wikis, different editors have applied their own styles and idiosyncracies to page layout, linkage, categorization etc. From time to time someone has a go at tidying up or expanding things to be simpler or more generic - sometimes this works, and sometimes it just adds more variation.

If you have thoughts on how better to organize content, the talk page here might be a good place to discuss approaches with other editors before piling in and making your changes.

The current template layout of Main Page is clever, and works well for many things, but can be confusing for editors. I've made up a reworked version at Main Page Test which keeps the menu layout in the top page and picks up separate templates for each section. To users it should be pretty much unchanged - as editors, please let me know if you think it makes more sense.

Removed a load of spam today (don't all thank me at once) do we need to look into only allowing regstered users to edit the wiki and having an easy registration process?

I think mediawiki has some captcha plugins. Don't know if they are easy to install tho. Minimally, we can make it that only registered user can post, and to register, you need to pass a captcha. -- LittleHamster 13:02, 28 March 2006 (BST)
We ended up having this conversation on the Hampshire Linux Users Group, after every single page on our (fairly extensive) wiki was wrecked in the space of about half an hour. I was (and am) strongly against captchas, as there's a significant accessibility problem with them for partially-sighted and blind people. Even with good eyesight, they can be very difficult to use.
Our solution was to write some patches for the wiki engine we were using. We blocked:
  • Users editing from locations with no RDNS
  • Specific domains (wildcarded)
  • Specific page content (also wildcarded)
We also added rollback features for the admins. I believe that some, but not all, of these features are available in MediaWiki (possibly through plugins).

There is a regexp spam filter. There's certain words you now can't use like .... well, I can't tell you - it blocks me.

made /w/ urls work - they look nicer.

I've moved some pages into the "Cities:" name space.

The idea is that pages in "main" are just reference for the game, and social pages are placed under cities: - that makes it easier to filter recent changes.

The wiki has been upgraded: thanks suicas.

Changed the wiki CSS to look like the game. I hope it's not too annoying.

Also the wiki now links to the game css file so this will work:

Default City Road Beach
Swamp Water Cave Mountain
Crags Jungle Forest Desert
BadLands Stone Goth Dragon
