The Great Island Hunt

Well, there's apprently a new quest that starts on a "lost island" somewhere in the Southern Ocean.

To make the search more efficient, those interested in finding the new island, (and preferably own a speedboat and plenty of power crystals) should band together to search areas of the ocean and not cover the same area over and over.

Interested, then come join us

The New Server

There's a new server! It's so fast! The G-forces are killing me! Stevie-O 01:28, 14 July 2006 (BST)

Seriously, though. The new server kicks ASS.

I was having problems before with pages not loading completely, both in-game and here on the wiki, and started playing exclusively over broadband. Now, with the new server, it often takes two or three tries before a page will load completely -- again, with a cable connection. Pings seem to go through fine, with an average transit between 1.75 and 2.5 ms. Weird. Firefox must not like me. -- Celane 04:57, 14 July 2006 (BST)
I've had blank pages 2-3 times today. I don't know if that's related. -- LittleHamster 14:31, 14 July 2006 (BST)
Messed around with browser (cache) settings; problem seems solved. -- Celane 14:00, 15 July 2006 (BST)

yeah, thank you my king for the new server, I would offer you another sandwich but I seem to have run out of components. --Solune 11:07, 14 July 2006 (BST)

Ahh, it has been a pain lately. Thank you my 'king, let me give you a huge hug and kiss *SMACKKK* Peskil 14:10, 14 July 2006 (BST)

To be fair, Ruthven did most of the work. Elseware 03:43, 16 July 2006 (BST)
The only pages I can't get any more (so far) are in 'sales to players' & 'chalk tagging points' in the league tables. Prolly my own fault, I'm just a simple soul. Things do seem to be quicker in general. Thank you most high and puissant King and all respect to Lord Ruthven. Dendrast 03:56, 16 July 2006 (BST)

Unable to Die

Twice now I've tried to commit suicide... Only to wake up in the water city hospital. Whats with that?

How have you attempted it? Darksatanic 11:15, 14 July 2006 (BST)
Attacked a rock with an empty mug, attacked a Thunderbird with my fists, attacked a vampire with a walking stick. I get hit down to 2 hp points and then wake up in water city with 15 hp points.
Bah. One of the fixes for another bug I put in earlier in the week caused this. You should be able to fulfil your suicidal tendencies now. Darksatanic 14:35, 14 July 2006 (BST)

Nerfing of Bling

I have had a long period where I have carefully managed my Bling (One Gold, and One Major Healing) and they have lasted a significant period (probably two months since I got them). Then yesterday, I lose both, and Iron Bling and an Opal Bilng all in about 100AP. Previously they had not worn out if I didn't wear them while moving. Has the rule the chance of the Bling wearing out apply to all AP expended? Or is it just bad luck? Baldrick 03:43, 13 July 2006 (BST)

Bling used to only wear out when you moved. As of yesterday, many bling wear out when they are used. The Gold Bling has a chance of wearing out each time you spend AP, and the Iron Bling has a chance of wearing out each time you take damage (but not when you move). The Bling page was updated accordingly. Darksatanic didn't mention a change to the break percentage either here or on IRC though, so it sounds like a run of bad luck combined with the new rules. --Dragon 06:00, 13 July 2006 (BST)
I'll be moving more bling (and other selected equippables) over to break on usage rather than movement. This will hopefully reduce the server load of people putting on and taking off blings all the time, as they then won't break as you move around, but only when you use them. Darksatanic 12:05, 13 July 2006 (BST)
If this was your intention it will not work because movement also uses AP. Why should I risk to loose a bling while doing stupid actions or simply moving around? I will rather continue to put it on and off. Peskil 13:46, 13 July 2006 (BST)
Only with blings that have an AP-based effect, like healing blings or gold blings. You can walk around all you like wearing an iron bling, and it won't ever break. With a gold bling, you can halve the cost of movement on the ocean, for example, so the test for breakage on AP spend is correct, in that instance (as is the similar test for healing blings).
There are currently three event triggers that may be used to test for breakage on:
  • on move (default)
  • on ap spend (gold and healing blings)
  • on taking damage (iron bling)
I will be adding more generic triggers which will allow (for example) misril blings to have a chance of breaking only when used for mining. The intent is that ultimately you won't be able to get the benefit of the item without risking it breaking. Darksatanic 14:52, 13 July 2006 (BST)
This sounds like the same reason I had two winged boots wear out within 30ap of each other. Or maybe I was just really unlucky... Kaos Dragon 20:21, 13 July 2006 (BST)
It's not just you. I had some Snowshoes wear out in 15 steps a few days ago. Not cost effective. -- Celane 20:24, 13 July 2006 (BST)
Both of these are just bad luck. The code for them didn't change. Darksatanic 20:27, 13 July 2006 (BST)
This is just the well known cities random 'bug'. There are quite a few stories of things breaking in a row. Personally, my unlucky stories include losing 3 air swords in 3 hits and jumper developed holes twice in one morning. (Actually the jumper thing happened twice, ie 4 holes in two mornings).
Does this mean that healing blings will only wear out when they heal you?
It's a thought, but no, the test is on AP spend, not on increasing HP as a result. Darksatanic 23:13, 13 July 2006 (BST)
In a similar vein, it'd be nice if Magic Boots could only break if they actually saved you AP. Random4518 06:29, 14 July 2006 (BST)

Speedboat for sale

For those that don't want to go through the hassle of collecting copper, tar, and 30 (!) pieces of ancient wood, I have an extra speedboat, available powered or unpowered. Please Palantir Me if you'd like to make an offer. Droll 16:09, 11 July 2006 (BST) Droll can you please reserve the speed boat for me i'll palantir you as soon as i get one and i'v got about 12000 Gold Pieces! Venom 01:56, 12 July 2006 (BST) Sorry, I already have an offer that is better than that. Droll 02:39, 12 July 2006 (BST) well really i have 14000 Please! i beg you i need one more than them!!! Venom 08:05, 12 July 2006 (BST)

Venom, to make the unpowered speed boat, Droll has put in 30 pieces of ancient wood. Have you looked at how much they cost on the markets? I think he'll be looking for a lot more than 14k in gold. I think his other offers would most likely include rare and wonderful items. -- LittleHamster 09:37, 12 July 2006 (BST)
Yes, the tiny rodent is correct. The boat has been traded, and it was indeed rare and wonderous substances that were offered. I would put their market value upwards of 100,000 GP. Sorry, Venom. Droll 15:16, 13 July 2006 (BST)
How about a clinic invite? would that be of any interest of you? --Ziabatsu 09:40, 15 July 2006 (BST)
That is interesting! The boat is sold, but I could probably scrape together the raw materials for another one. Droll 14:04, 15 July 2006 (BST)

New Attempt at Lending Library

A coalition of players spearheaded by Duke BlaisedeC MD, Duke Stevie-O MD, and Duke Dragon MD are attempting to assemble a new set of book bags for the lending library. Details are in Ograhs Book Club. -- 20:38, 9 July 2006 (BST)

Message in the Sand

On my way to southern lands and I find

Written in the sand is the message: 7q=^hWOh

at 80E, 8S

No option to erase. IS this another Emissary type thing? Cause I'm fed up with that.- Masterpete

I saw something similar many moons ago.. Possibly in the same place. I think it slowly wears out. It said something like "go 3 north" but half erased. Never found anything though. MrFoo 14:55, 8 July 2006 (BST)
I seem to remember that at some point it was possible, using a pointy stick, to write things in the sand. As time went by it sorta went away, though. Like real writing in the sand. vloodo 01:25, 9 July 2006 (BST)

Sewage Tunnels

I was exploring the middle area looking for a dragon to get my catana aligned and I found a hole in a cave, at 76E 60N. Curious, I went down and found myself in the sewers. All sorts of interesting monsters, among which an adolescent turtle (couldn't find a way to hurt it and it did 40 damage per attack) and a Dianoga that did all sorts of nasty things to me -- now I am on an acid trip. It takes 7AP to move through the sewage waters, WITH winged boots. There's also patches of mud here and there. My instinct tells me I am at 1079E 1061N. Weird. vloodo 18:34, 7 July 2006 (BST)

I believe you've found yourself in the NE Tunnels. Supposedly some of the new potions would heal you. -- LittleHamster 19:03, 7 July 2006 (BST)
And a pair of Welly's reduces movement costs to 1. Hbookbinder 20:55, 7 July 2006 (BST)
Where do you find that? vloodo 02:38, 10 July 2006 (BST)
So...adolescent tortoises? That are really hard to kill, and which disarm you like ninjas? That appear in sewers? Hmmm. I wonder if they're also mutants... Nick 22:31, 8 July 2006 (BST)
Master Splinter! Mad props. Also makes me wonder if my game group is up for some TMNT, Palladium style... -- Celane 00:05, 9 July 2006 (BST)
I wonder, does the mincer have a special damage against the sewer rats and turtles? Or do we have some other sort of shredding device? -Stien 08:54, 11 July 2006 (BST)

I'm sat in the sewers after using a Dragon Stone to heal after a failed atack on an eating tortoise, and I've just seen this:

What was going on...
The Dragon Stone glows white.
That feels much better.
Great Lord Ignatz MD fades out.

Is that a hint that these are the tunnels for an altar? (Since that causes fading out of body parts) Can't see if the GL changed anything in passing since it's another couple of hours till I've got positive AP again. MrFoo 16:49, 11 July 2006 (BST)

No, I was just passing through. I didn't want to kill the tortoise you were working on, so I teleported around it. Nick 20:11, 11 July 2006 (BST)
Ah okay. But that means you were going south past the tortoise. So were you heading towards somethig interesting or the cave a little east, or away from being somewhere else... MrFoo 20:15, 11 July 2006 (BST)
Yes, that's correct. Nick 22:13, 11 July 2006 (BST)

This might be useful for anyone wanting to explore, but unable to feed the tortoises with enough pizza:

You attack the Adolescent Tortoise.
You play soothing music on the Fiddle.
The Adolescent Tortoise is lulled by the music.

MrFoo 20:09, 11 July 2006 (BST)

That really isn't very useful MrFoo :) Not many people have learned the open mic song. And Yendor seems to be slow handing out our 2nd round goodies. By the way, is there anyway to get pizzas other than from the cornucopia? I've upgraded it to the horn. There must be some other way to get past the tortoise. -- LittleHamster 22:56, 11 July 2006 (BST)

I find it useful :D And yes, I know I have made a pizza, which I could then slice, but I can't remember exactly what was on it. Gorgan-zola cheese, olives, tomato, dough? I'm sorry, I should take more notes. Vashka 23:16, 11 July 2006 (BST)
Found the recipe in build.xml (thanks Vashka). Can't try it out since I'm in serious -ve APness. But I'll add it to Food now. -- LittleHamster 07:25, 12 July 2006 (BST)

Lava in the North

There appears to be a large band of Lava stretching across eastern areas of the Frozen North at approximately 125N. The extents are currently unknown. The creatures of the frozen north however are proving fairly unimpressed by the extremes of temperatures, and are continuing on as normal.

The lava seems to extend all the way to the eastern border of the world, so there is no route north across the eastern side of the Frozen North.

It is unknown at this point if this is related to the opening of the Water City Power Plant, or if this is a completely unrelated natural disaster.

Some parts of the Lava appear to have started cooling. However it seems to take in the region of 20 AP to walk on it. 20!MrFoo 10:35, 7 July 2006 (BST)

I was caught in the lava flow and when I woke up this morning I was standing ON lava, along with the 'king. I hefted a snowball at him and looked around. I could walk around on the lava, but not off it onto normal terrain. Furthermore, all movement cost 7 ap, magic boots or walking sticks didn't lower it, and holding a map didn't raise it. Here's a screenshot, I was hoping the lava hit the barrier wall of the plateau there, so I could sneak in and check out that primeaval jungle, but alas, it was a few squares shy of melting the mountains.--Hamelin 15:26, 8 July 2006 (BST)

Have you tried welly's to help? -Stien 17:48, 7 July 2006 (BST)

Wellys make it even more expensive to move over. Movement modifier -4 + 2*winged boot = 21AP to move. +Wellys = 24.

I now seem to have the ability to remove Cooling Lava. For a mere 144 AP... One Hundred and Fourty Four AP. One Hundred and Fourty Four AP... One Hundred and Fourty Four AP MrFoo 18:31, 7 July 2006 (BST)

I've removed some cooling lava.. on the off chance that such a high cost must have some reward... and as far as I can tell, there isn't one. No idea what the square underneath me has become, since I'm out of AP for about 15 hours. It might be that the lava will have to be removed if anyone wants to adventure to the upper parts of the Frozen North, if so, I've just made the first dent in this massive task. MrFoo 20:50, 7 July 2006 (BST)
Removing the Cooling Lava does just that, remove it and reveal the original terrain. No benefits other than will eventually lead to less AP needed to travel across. MrFoo 11:27, 8 July 2006 (BST)
When the lava cools completely it will cost even more to remove. But you can use mining tools to reduce the AP. Maybe load someone up with misril bling? Elseware 03:08, 9 July 2006 (BST)
It's stupid, Spear of Odin pulls me gently south, straight on the lava. :| -- 11:57, 8 July 2006 (BST)
Boy am I glad I got to vahalla before the lava.. just before. -Stien
Well, crap. -- Celane 18:52, 8 July 2006 (BST)
The lava ends about 4 squares too far south of the "Mountains of Madness" (eastern version of high plateau)... So that lava's not openend anything. I think it's just another disaster to test us all, like the Mosquitos.
The lava on the Great North Road is starting to cool. I'm heading up there with a spade and a couple of misril blings to start on clearing it. Anyone want to help? Darksatanic 15:06, 11 July 2006 (BST)
Having no Misril bling, I think I'll pass. I'm sure a spade alone doesn't know 120AP off the cost of clearing. MrFoo 15:45, 11 July 2006 (BST)
I've got it down to 18AP with two misril blings, a gold bling and a spade. Darksatanic 16:08, 11 July 2006 (BST)

The Great North Road is now cleared, so you can all get back up to Bögnør again. Darksatanic 10:08, 12 July 2006 (BST)

Open Mic Night - Today! (Sunday)

Yey, GL Yendor has told me there's going to be another Open Mic Night this Sunday! I hope we'll learn a new song. Check out Band Tryouts and Music for more info and get practising your instruments! Vashka 19:50, 6 July 2006 (BST)

The last time this happened I showed up, played my fiddle a bit, and didn't get anything for my troubles. Could someone write "Open Mic Night for Dummies" or something? Random4518 16:56, 7 July 2006 (BST)
Get drunk. Get on stage. Play a solo. Sing drunken songs. Have a hangover. MrFoo 17:02, 7 July 2006 (BST)
OK, is there going to be a "Get on stage" button? Is playing a solo done with "Practice (5 AP)", or is there some other button? And do you sing with "Say (1 AP)", or is there a "Sing" button? Random4518 17:07, 7 July 2006 (BST)
I was being poetic. But there is a "play solo" button when the open mic night is actually on, and you need to be drunk to succesfully do it. MrFoo 17:08, 7 July 2006 (BST)
Ah. Thanks! Maybe I'll be able to learn a song this time. Random4518 17:12, 7 July 2006 (BST)
Good thing I've been practicing! -- Celane 18:46, 7 July 2006 (BST)
I haven't, and I'm told I'm back to square one. I wonder whether I'd be able to play on sunday, even when extremely drunk. -- LittleHamster 19:07, 7 July 2006 (BST)
I think you had to be a "very talented musician" for ther last one. MrFoo 19:08, 7 July 2006 (BST)
Awesome! I've been anxiously awaiting this! JohnnyRogers 19:41, 7 July 2006 (BST)

What people have already said seems about right, from what I can remember, but I'll just add that even if you're not very talented, it's almost certainly worth coming along to play - apart from it being fun (of course!), not-so-talented players last time got some limited-use panpipes to soothe monsters (we elite players got the unlimited, attack-monster-with-your-instrument version). Vashka 20:03, 7 July 2006 (BST)

Just a reminder: Open Mic Night is today. The Fiddling Wizard Folk Club is filling up with people fast, and there's a lot of practising going on. I think the last Open Mic Night started around 12 noon and went on till late evening, so pop in when you can! Everyone is welcome, of course. Vashka 11:49, 9 July 2006 (BST)
If nothing else, it's worth the treat of Vashka singing :D A lot. Emelie 16:08, 9 July 2006 (BST)
Looks like someone has sabotaged the event with a few cans of crushed wyrms. Rackmount 23:23, 9 July 2006 (BST)
I'd hardly call it sabotage. More of a case of Dukes being Dukes, under the influence of perhaps a wee bit too much folk music... and alcohol... I'm sure, what with the awesome assortment of valor (and weaponry) present, that the matter will sort itself out shortly. -- Sertularian 23:54, 9 July 2006 (BST)
Actually, it was Nick.  :) And all but one of them are gone by now; I expect the last one will drop shortly too. --Dragon 00:12, 10 July 2006 (BST)
Guilty as charged. With that many people around, I knew that the dragons would be wuickly disposed of. Think of it as all good experience. Nick 10:11, 10 July 2006 (BST)
Well, that didn't actually seem to be the case. I couldn't damage the dragons, and whatever parts of the dragons what were left didn't seem to be attracting much attention, so I couldn't get into the club. Bouncers, eh? Now I know how one of my acquaintances felt turning up to Full Tilt at the Electric Ballroom in a penguin suit. Rackmount 10:23, 10 July 2006 (BST)
You could have gotten into the club from the south or west.... --Dragon 16:30, 10 July 2006 (BST)

I wonder what being "in touch with my roots" does? Doesn't let me charm monsters, I think. (An Eagle I ran into was unimpressed.) I haven't seen any difference on my "Me" page. Anyone notice anything? Random4518 00:38, 10 July 2006 (BST)

I got a free pint of ale... :) -- Sertularian 01:05, 10 July 2006 (BST)
Dare I hope it has anything to do with Treemen? ... -- Celane 05:09, 10 July 2006 (BST)
Or planting? JohnnyRogers 06:08, 10 July 2006 (BST)
I don't know what it means, but when I practice now it tells me I rock. JohnnyRogers 22:32, 10 July 2006 (BST)
It means several things: (1) That I added some new levels to the description rather than good + very good. (2) You have more than 200 skill points in music (3) that I have played way too much guitar hero. Elseware 01:07, 11 July 2006 (BST)
How exactly do you learn songs?,and i find it funny when your completely drunk it sais"you are wankered" and everything starts with sexy for example"sexy salamander" Venom 13:59, 11 July 2006 (BST)
You can't learn songs. If you took part in the first Open Mic Night Great Lord Yendor taught you a song. MrFoo 14:04, 11 July 2006 (BST)
ok,do you know when the next open mic night is on? Venom 02:01, 12 July 2006 (BST)
So did we get anything other than free ale during this one? I now rock as well. BTW, I love Guitar Hero. It was a regular Thursday afternoon event in the dorms last semester. :) Jatt 02:59, 12 July 2006 (BST)
Great Lord Yendor just taught me a new song, and I got some Magic Biscuits from him. So yes, yes we did. -- Celane 12:05, 19 July 2006 (BST)

Weapon Give Away

Any newbies wanting some free weapons should go to the Market in Windy City at around 10pm game time(BST) which is 5pm EST. Donkey will be handing out freebies pillaged from the theives forrest. Only thing really cool is a Fire Bow, that will go to the first Non-nobility fire character I see. - Donkey

Water City Power Plant

So any clue what this does or if it will do anything? I scoped it out and found out nothing, except where it starts and ends. The power plant is right south of water city, but it connects to a pipeline that runs directly south and meets the pumping station at 93e 80n.... My guess big explosion leading to new underground tunnels.

93e 91n Power Plant
93e 80n Pumping Station

I've got the 'Plant Bean' option on the pipeline. Just gives me a cucumber though. Nothing exciting. I'm sure this will be the entrance to the north-east tunnels. -- LittleHamster 21:05, 5 July 2006 (BST)

According to IRC, people are getting into the NE tunnels through the caves. Rumor has it there's a passage just north of Standing Stone III, but I haven't been there yet myself so I don't know the exact coordinates. --Dragon 02:13, 6 July 2006 (BST)
Are they sure those are the NE tunnels and not the SE tunnels? The location seems to better parallel the SW tunnels than the NW tunnels... --BlaisedeC 02:31, 6 July 2006 (BST)
But Stone III is at 71E 62N. That's more north than 50N. -- LittleHamster 15:58, 6 July 2006 (BST)
Yes, but the NW tunnels are north of the main map, while the SW tunnels are in the interior like these are. --BlaisedeC 16:38, 6 July 2006 (BST)
So? Who said the NE tunnels have to mirror NW? MrFoo 16:49, 6 July 2006 (BST)
The thing is there was a message about lava in the north scaring Tauntauns, so Thats where the NE tunnels are. Someone has to find them though... I got nothing.
The two things may not be related. There may have been two seperate developments at the same time. MrFoo 18:19, 6 July 2006 (BST)

Although the entrance to the NW tunnels are in the frozen north, almost the entire tunnel network is in the NW quadrant of the main cities area and the NW altar is just 2 squares north of the SW altar. Whether these tunnels should be designated NE or SE will depend on which altar (if any) they lead to. I haven't finished exploring (or found an altar, obviously(, but given the territory they cover, I suspect these will be the NE tunnels. Hendsch 17:46, 6 July 2006 (BST)

Public Mine

I've established a mine at 90,2 (easily accessible to all); all are welcome to use it. If someone wants to keep track of how long it lasts, it's one day old already, and was built at 8:52 PM game time. Soren 00:32, 4 July 2006 (BST)

I grabbed a pestle from a recent trip to Bentnob and I was looking through and I noticed that some herbs could be used to make a few potions. I looked through my herbs to see if I could do anything with them and could only make a "Toadvine potion" from a nutmeg and a juniper berry. Can anyone figure out the other recipes and the results of what the potions do? Kaos Dragon 09:30, 3 July 2006 (BST)

Well, some of the recipes are described in the Herbs page, namely Brak, Trill, Shanghorn, Dharma, Boniface and Vitsee potions. Please add your Toadvine potion recipe on the same page, or maybe all recipes should be moved to 'Making Stuff'? TerrorRemedy
There are already wiki links created for the potions on the Herbs page. I added links to those wiki pages from the Consumables page. It seems to be a natural place for potions, seeing that other magical potions such as Potion of Accuracy and Healing Potions are on that page. -- LittleHamster 22:59, 3 July 2006 (BST)
Well people are making potions, yet I don't think anyone's been drinking them, or at least not putting the results on the wiki. Kaos Dragon 06:26, 4 July 2006 (BST)
The wiki pages say you need a pestle, however I don't have one, yet can still make a Trill Potion... MrFoo 09:55, 4 July 2006 (BST)
I don't have a pestle either. I'll see if any of the ingredients are available from the markets and attempt to make some potions. -- LittleHamster 11:01, 4 July 2006 (BST)

Rave in a Cave

There is a "rave in a cage" going on at 7E 46S. I can enter the square but "Join party (10AP)" only gives me a blank window. Maybe I need some mushrooms first? Leffen 12:48, 29 June 2006 (BST)

Ditto. Jenali 15:16, 29 June 2006 (BST)

Ancient Castle?

At 1 AM, as I was strolling toward Standing Stone V, I came across this at 63E 71N:

Ancient Castle: An old, large, fortified castle. It somehow doesn't seem to take up as much space
as it should do, and there is an odd blurring effect around it.

The words "Ancient Castle" in the description were linked in typical fashion to

After finishing up my last Standing Stone an hour later, I decided to go back to this mysterious castle and wait for a while to see if any options showed up. Well, I logged back in a few minutes ago, and the square has turned into a regular old Desert! Did I miss something? Or was Ruthven just jealous of Ignatz's Retreat? Mig 05:17, 29 June 2006 (BST)

I encountered it on Tuesday at 95E 21S whilst mapping the great desert. I had to fight my way through a dragon to get to it and ran out of AP with the final blow. A couple of seconds later, around 14:00 hours, it had vanished. I presumed it to be a mirage and, after spending 24 hours mapping the local while trying to keep the spot that castle appeared in sight in case it reappeared, I moved on. Maybe there's a pattern to its movements and some way of entering... PlanetNiles 09:09, 29 June 2006 (BST)
I've just seen it by the Night Shrine Nick 23:17, 29 June 2006 (BST)

A few minutes after 6:00 AM I checked in, the Castle was back at 63E 71N (d'oh, made a typo before). It's now slightly after 1:35 PM and I have been checking in every hour; it hasn't left. Couldn't get any options to come up. Mig 13:38, 30 June 2006 (BST)
It's currently one square south of the Fiddling Wizard Folk Club. And, in case anyone was curious, it's not possible to write with chalk (I checked all three kinds) or plant a Magic Bean on its square. I'm going to hang out here and see if I go with it the next time it moves... Random4518 05:00, 9 July 2006 (BST)

Reconstructing Wriggling Road

A few months ago Billz8 had the great idea of building a Road through the desert out of worms. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough maintance done and now the road is no more. I personally loved that road and now am planning on reconstructing it. I started at the same place as the original (57E 8S) and have been plowing my way through living tars and mimics. If anyone is interested, come help me open a can of.... worms on these baddies. --Gaccm 09:44, 26 June 2006 (BST)

I've been trying to map a relatively safe route across great desert so when I'm next in the area I might be able to give you a hand. PlanetNiles 14:41, 26 June 2006 (BST)
Gaccm, the use of worms is not going to be very effective since worms now die within two weeks. I don't think that there is enough interest in maintaining the road for that to work. My suggestion is to have aligned paths. If you use your wands to change monsters to your own alignment they will frequently let you pass (it works best with small dragons). DWE 17:18, 26 June 2006 (BST)
You'd need four roads, one for each alignment. - Isambard 18:02, 26 June 2006 (BST)
... and it still wouldn't work, now that all monsters eventually die. Darksatanic 19:05, 26 June 2006 (BST)
So what we need is a dedicated team(s) to keep a path open across the desert PlanetNiles 19:22, 26 June 2006 (BST)
Maybe the desert can be skipped entirely. The dedicated team could work to keep the marketplace stocked with Brighthelm Rocks (nearly at-cost, breaking even by selling in bulk), or there could be a summoning group, like the Island Hoppers. Random4518 00:25, 27 June 2006 (BST)
You can't use the Brightonhelm Rocks if you've never visited the city. I know - I've tried YFM
Or maybe you can just educate people to 1) take the trail between windy city and school of hard knocks (there are 3-4 oasis on route), 2) wand mimics and mimics only, and 3) don't fight. Why is crossing the desert hard anyway? I believe a Wriggling Road is better served in the Caverns. -- LittleHamster 07:54, 27 June 2006 (BST)
Good routes are: 6E 8S and go straight south, gives you 30 desert squares and three oasis on route (6E 14S, 6E 26S, 6E 33S). It will land you close to School of Hard knocks. Or alternatively 24E 8S and go straight south, gives you 29 desert squares and 2 oasis on route (24E 12S, 24E 32S). A third oasis is 'close' to the path at 21E 23S, but will give you extra distance to go. This path will land you close to Betty Fnords clinic. TerrorRemedy 16:02, 27 June 2006 (BST)

Tauntaun Corpses

How long do Tauntaun corpses last for? I've been waiting west of where Thor's Cottage should be for a couple of hours now, and Duke Cenwarde MD is sat there in a Tauntaun Corpse. When I go into the square, none of the cottage effects happen, just the Tauntaun one (I suddenly get very hot, due to all the woolies I have on). Is this a permanent effect, does it last a night, or will it be that way until Cenwarde decides to move on? Rackmount 13:18, 23 June 2006 (BST)

the tauntaun corpses seem to persist. i have walked away from one i have killed and seen it again later (not sure about the time difference). i am sure it persists overnight though. perhaps they never go away and the north will become a tauntaun graveyard? Burp 15:37, 23 June 2006 (BST)
They should last 24 hours. If you've got one that you think has lasted longer, report it as a bug, please. Darksatanic 17:19, 23 June 2006 (BST)
Thanks for the hint, DS. I've no reason to believe it's older than 24 hours. If it hasn't gone by 13:00 tomorrow I'll post it as a bug. Rackmount 20:06, 23 June 2006 (BST)
(For anyone who's wondering, it did go, about 12 hours later).

Major Gorgan Issue!

So "Gorgan"zola Cheese was just changed, like within the last day. Before it was one pint of milk, since it's not easy to get a bucket or the Gorgan head at all, for 6 Slices of Gorganzola cheese. Now it is One pint for one slice. This is a crazy drop. I could see it going down to 3, just to make it a little harder, but dropping it from 6 to 1 is highway robbery. I don't mind the ap drop, but I was fine at how much ap it cost before, the idea of having to milk four cows to make one sandwich is crazy. Does anyone else agree with me? -Stien 02:04, 17 June 2006 (BST)

'King elseware Mine

I just found a former piece of Crags now is titled 'King elseware Mine" at 88E 87N. I put on an Iron Bling and grabbed my spade (I am a Duke in his service so I guess the 'King won't mind). So far nothing special (stones, gold, bronce) ...

It's related to this New_Items#Mining_Permit. You should be able to mine for 1/2 the AP there. -- LittleHamster 10:53, 10 June 2006 (BST)

Lava on Great Plain

There's a fairly large wall of Lava on the Great Plain (just north of the KOT keep). Not sure how far to the west this goes, or if there's anything worth mentioning in the middle. -- Thog 15:27, 5 June 2006 (BST)

I chartered the extant of the lava; I found its furthest extant to the west to be 78E (@103N), to the north 105N (@80E), to the south 100N (@80E) and East 81E (@102N). Bizzarely I noticed a snake frolicking in the magma. PlanetNiles 21:22, 5 June 2006 (BST)

Phaser Auction

Okay, here's the deal. I will give a phaser (which is probably the game's most devastating weapon) to whoever promises to send me, through the post, in real meatspace, the most interesting and unusual item. (Or on another page, if anyone with greater wikininja skills than I wants to make it, and then link here).

I really don't want to give in-game items a real world value. Look at this as a bit like the Barbelith Dance-Card, or similar. Something you might send someone, just to make them laugh, anyway.Alistair 21:41, 23 May 2006 (BST)

Where are the treemen?

I've been looking for one for days now. The tarot deck is of no help. Does anyone know what is going on? Maybe they went extinct? vloodo 15:07, 18 May 2006 (BST)

Same here, although I did find one even though the Tarot deck failed a few times in a row. Damned thing didn't drop anything, let alone any ancient wood. Looks like a ninja / badger / pig / thief cull is in order. :( Subdude2k 15:27, 18 May 2006 (BST)
We're working on it. Feel free to join us. -- Thog 15:38, 18 May 2006 (BST)
The problem is that clearing out the Forest isn't exactly a long term solution. Wouldn't setting a lifetime for all monsters make more sense? Same as has been done for Earth Worms, even if that was for different reasons. That would get around the problem of hordes of not-very-useful creatures that are lying around at the moment. Srboneidle2 17:02, 18 May 2006 (BST)
I can actually see why the devs haven't done that yet - without incentive, some critters will never get attacked. I mean, what are the chances people would take on lots of thieves and ninja (given the costs of doing so) if they didn't have to? Compare this with Rocs - they're a royal pain to kill (esp if you're water or air) but people still seek them out because they need the rocks. I wonder if it might be better to increase the rewards of killing critters in the forest/desert/etc (or add another version or two of the Hard Knocks quest which takes stuff from the difficult critters). -- Thog 18:32, 18 May 2006 (BST)
As an experiment i've given all monsters a time-to-live flag except for snarks and the like.
If I recall, one of the factors in the loot a critter drops is how long it's been alive. Is this going to potentially mess with the value of the average creature (since the 'average' age is now likely to be younger)? Making the Forest monsters more worth killing might be the only long term solution. Cerril 17:33, 19 May 2006 (BST)
Not in the way you think. Monsters accumulate stuff as they age by their interactions with players but not just because they are old. The one danger here is that the monster with your corpse could die of old age, is there anything to prevent that?
Not that I'm aware of. However, I believe that a monster near death (a couple of days away, I believe) will be marked -- like the Earthworms. So, if you attack a sick or dying monster, you have that added incentive not to die, or to come back and regain your corpse quickly. Darksatanic 13:11, 21 May 2006 (BST)
Perhaps a good reason (more stuffs?) and a safer method to kill those ninjas and thieves would induce people to help diminish the population... Thieves are largely disliked because they can take anything from your pack - bags and other unique items, your Caravel, cucumber sarnie components etc - maybe nerf their theft or give a way to defend against it? jmb 16:22, 19 May 2006 (BST)
Actually, if killing a thief guaranteed recovery of all stuff he stole, I'd be fine with it otherwise unchanged. As is, there's a chance that the items disappear forever. I think that's what most people are objecting to. -- Thog 17:00, 19 May 2006 (BST)
I think this is a good application of the concept of voluntary muling; in other words, because the players would be using eachother as cupboards but are actually using the characters, I doubt there's anything especially wrong in the eyes of the programmers with storing all your inventory (quite a task!) in another, volunteering player. Any word on this? It's one of those gambling/butter risk decreasing devices, many of which seem frowned upon... but the major problem seems to be muling, to me. After all, we were allowed to do it in the Order of the Golden Sickle. macksting 01:28, 20 May 2006 (BST)
Indeed. The official line is that as long as items are being traded between characters run by distinct people, we're happy. Trading items between characters run by the same person is what's frowned upon (however bad your muptiple personality disorder is). Darksatanic 13:06, 21 May 2006 (BST)
It seems like if you want ancient wood, you gotta get out, clear a bit of forest and wait to see if treemen spawn there. Then kill them. Copper nails work nicely, and if a few of them get stolen in the process, you don't have worry as much as if your copper axe gets lifted. Not that difficult. AP intensive? Yes. Time consuming? Yes. It's not supposed to be easy to build a caravel or a speedboat. As for having someone else hold some of your precious items, I don't see how anyone could object to this. Giving a bag of your most valuable treasures to a friend (read: a friend who is not your own secondary character) so you don't lose them to theives should be viewed as good teamwork, not muling (perhaps I'm misunderstanding the conversation). -palindrome 19:25, 20 May 2006 (BST)
OK, here's one blue-sky thought - would it affect game balance too much if an additional reward from doing the master thief training quest put you in league with the thieves, and they will no longer steal from you? Or possibly, will only steal your in-use weapon? Or drop your stolen stuff (and anyone else's!) if you kill them? jmb 12:59, 25 May 2006 (BST)
A few days ago I saw a big gang of BlingWraiths in the forest, immediately west of Harvey's Farm. I could see them with the Ghost Hunter Gear, but I didn't have anything that would let me attack them (otherwise I might have had a go for the sake of my Daemonic Sword). Perhaps they were there wiping out the Treemen to prevent them from getting to the Hobbit? (where they would jam up the bar, no doubt).
Granted that there are times of day (to my understanding) when ghosts and such are rendered attackable, but can the Spirit Sword be used effectively against Bling Wraiths? macksting 01:28, 20 May 2006 (BST)
To a certain extent. It allows you to see the Wraith, but it won't damage it. You have to switch weapons for that...which, of course, means you lose the ability to see and therefore to hit the Wraith. If you hit the Wraith a few times with the Spirit Sword, it will become visible, but in the meantime you take a helluva lot of damage if you already hold blings. Diamond Bling is your best option. Billz8 02:39, 20 May 2006 (BST)

So the treemen are kinda back, there are more of them there atleast. Maybe kill one treeman every other day. But here is the thing. They don't hold ancient wood anymore. I have killed four treemen in the last week and not one of them gave me a piece of ancient wood. I got regular wood. No Ancient one. Is there a new way to get ancient wood that I don't know about? -Stien

It's never been 100% certain - even back in the bad old days, I'd occasionally catch a Treeman, and I'd say it was about a 50% chance he'd have Ancient Wood. Over the last week, I've killed 3 - two had wood, and one didn't. -- Thog 19:30, 29 June 2006 (BST)
I've had ancient wood off a treeman several times in the last few days. I think you were just unlucky, Stien. Darksatanic 20:43, 29 June 2006 (BST)
Ok, I killed number 5 today, and got the oh so lucky 5 pieces of wood. So I guess I am just very unlucky... Also have winged boots lifespan gotten smaller, I wore two boots for about two months, and now a shoe goes out every week. Is this me being unlucky as well? -Stien 11:00, 30 June 2006 (BST)

You feel like you owe (a person) a favour...

Has anyone else got a mysterious message something like this: "You feel like you owe (someone's name) a favour?" I got one last week, for someone I've not otherwise come across. By chance, I managed to do something to repay the favour, or so I think (while on my way to sign up for the gauntlet I found them in the middle of a duel, and on half the HP of the other duellist. I healed them up, and when I emerged from the gauntlet they were in the same square, but out of the duel. I'm hoping that they hadn't moved because they won the duel while offline thanks to my intervention). But now I'm wondering why I felt I owed them a favour, and is there some specific way of paying it back. Is it some previously unheard-of Kudos effect? Rackmount 16:58, 3 May 2006 (BST)

If you've died recently, your corpse was probably found and returned to a KoT donation point. You can retrieve it from the morgue whenever you feel like it. Kaos Dragon 17:26, 3 May 2006 (BST)

I'm quite certain that's the source of the message. Someone I know, whose character died, got this message (and the corpse was in the morgue). -- Sertularian 18:33, 3 May 2006 (BST)

Well there certainly did turn out to be one of my corpses in the KoT morgue - but I died well over a month ago, back when I wasn't even a knight. Sick Earth Worm

I was heading back to the mountains from market to find myself some garlic when I happened upon a worm. I didn't think much about it, but this worm caught my eye. While he still had his one hit point, he was clearly quite sick. It said so right in his description. He was not an earth worm, he was a sick earth worm.

What kind of blight is killing the animals of our cities?

I tried to give him a dose of antidote, in case he was poisoned, but... well, I've been around and he's too scared of me to let me touch him.

Does anyone know anything about this?Density 02:37, 10 April 2006 (BST)

Apparently, there is some kind of disease that the Earth Worms picked up when they were introduced into the desert (see the Wriggling road) - which is a foreign land to them - and they have spread it to the rest of the population.
On a side observation, the Earth Worms in Space seem to have the chance of affliction as those on the Ground. I guess they can't stand the low atmosphere... MrBlarney 08:29, 11 April 2006 (BST)

Edge of the World found

At great expense the Duke Nomex has found the end of the World. After nearly being eaten by Krakens, pecked to death by Gulls, and a near mutiny the great Duke is reporting one edge of the World is 0E 200S. Fearing being sucked off into the void by vast waterfalls he approched no closer than 4 units of any edge. The Duke continues his travels East to determine if rumors of a "New World" are true. The Duke's only regret on this adventure is the lack of a Wizard's Hat to speed the journey. One unusual group hallucination of a "messenger on a bicycle" was reported by the crew.
