Welcome Back Party

We are back

We are back! But perhaps all is not as it should be although the air's feeling quite fresh. If you notice anything a little odd, post it here... --Ra 19:13, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

I noticed the game is back. Does that count as odd? :P Seriously, tho' - many, many thanks to all the GLs who brought the game back to life!!!! Scary Mike 15:55, 17 March 2012 (EST)
Enjoy! Hopefully everything seems stable and somewhat sane (well, as sane as cities ever was), but let us know if anything isn't working as it should be! --Ra 20:01, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh lordy, all my dead pets have been resurrected - including George my dogbot. Now I care again. And have 26,000 AP to burn since I left my character sitting on Holiday Island. It's definitely decision time. Do I start playing again or not? What if it's all pulled out from beneath me again. I don't think I could bear it but...then many new things to see and do.--Caroline 21:29, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
Great to see you back - Cities is sticking around for the long term, we've gone to great lengths to make sure it's here to stay and will continue to develop! Plus, your pets need you :-) --Ra 22:22, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

You open the basket. It contains neat stuff. You gain 5000 Gold Pieces. You gain a Mug of Coffee (proper). You gain a Bottle of Sparkling Wine. You gain a Kipple. You gain 10 Magic Beans. You gain a Kings Crest Talisman. You gain a Summon Stone. You chuck away the empty basket.

Holy F#%$n S$#%T!!! I am so excited by this!!!

I can finally get around to using those sprigs of mistletoe? Or will there be a total reset, where we lose everything? either way i'll be glad to see the Kingdom again. ATM i get a password dialogue box that seems unresponsive to any of my own character names and passwords, so i assume thats for your own use, until the game is ready again?AmishRobots 02:42, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

i couldn't help noticing that the game was still down.. any word yet? AmishRobots 04:54, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Eh. Not much to say, except that the GLs feel they have reason to hold out hope. It apparently works in captivity, but cannot or has not yet been released back into the wild for us. S. Mackie 03:50, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
hmm maybe they could release a version of it on CD? does that sound totally stupid? I mean it does sort of rely on multiple players...
okay really though. I'd be happy at this point even if i had to start all over with a new character from scratch. Sure it would suck to lose all my pretty toys and skills and such, but at least i'd have a game to play. Would it help if i donated $10 usd? cause i'm willing to do that, if beer money helps put cities back on my internet!
I keep checking back, hoping that our world has returned from the abyss. Syagrius 00:47, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
I check pretty often as well. It's been over 6 months, but I still have hope... JAD
I don't check as often as I used to. As Westley said to Inigo, "Get used to disappointment." Dendrast
I just idle (and occasionally chat) on the IRC channel. It's mostly quiet there, though occasionally there's a bit of random discussion. I figure people will mention there if there's any news. --Dragon 02:33, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
I too would donate money to a fund if it would help advance the timetable of recovery! Can any of the GLs chime in on whether or not that would be a useful thing? --Scary Mike 07:50, 26 January 2012 (EST)
Anybody know any games playable in this format? Other than, of course, The Game. S. Mackie 23:54, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Have you tried Urban Dead? - Cameron 09:47, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
I found Urban dead quite borring when you reach the top level and then there's nothing more to achieve. Unless they've changed that? Will the cities ever return? I miss my favourite procrastination-place! (: Agzu 10:53, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
I gave up on Urban Dead pretty quickly. As you say, once maxed out, there's nothing more to do. If you're one of the annoying folks, you kill your own kind just for the he-- of it. Syagrius 03:30, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
I dusted off my old Kingdom of Loathing account the other day, but I still miss cities. Replacing it with Urban Dead is just wrong...funny, but wrong. JAD
hey, do you know what? i still love cities, i want it back, is this gonna be a browncoat thing? srsly, don't do this to us!!! at least say something!AmishRobots
srsly for real tho, give me an address, linked to a paypal account, i will send you money, even if all i accomplish is buying you a few beers. The time i've been able to waste here already is well worth a good six pack of high class beer.AmishRobots

The End?

At the risk of sounding overly dire is this the end for Cities? I hope not :( --Scary Mike 06:43, 13 July 2011 (EST)

From IRC:
<darkthing> It's some kind of GRUB config issue, by the sounds of it.
<darkthing> It's undoubtedly fixable, given enough time and effort,
<darkthing> but the only person with access (AndyLandy) doesn't have the time necessary.
<AndyLandy> I'll see if I can find some time to prod it next week
<AndyLandy> It'd be nice to get it all back
<AndyLandy> Keep your respective digits crossed!

I feel like I should know better than to be optimistic. Not about this particularly, about anything. I grew up something of a pessimist, and I tend to harken back to that readily. I confess, though, that I seem to be optimistic about this. S. Mackie 23:22, 14 October 2011 (BST)
Oli Akbar! I too am optimistic! Mostly because I'm an optimist. But also because everything seems to be much improved, Cities-wise and wiki-wise. I wish to buy this Oli a drink, should he ever find himself in Detroit for whatever reason. --Scary Mike 06:43, 17 Oct 2011 (EST)

Not just any ultrasound, but the sort that's a diagnostic with an eye toward the more woeful of prenatal ailments, and the sort that tells you the child's sex as best can be gathered by such means.
Seems our child is doing rather well, and will be a boy. In online contexts, I shall discuss him under the name Diego. S. Mackie 06:35, 16 February 2011 (GMT)
Addendum: I am terrified re: my credentials as a parent. I'm terrified of the responsibility this will require.
Far more than any of that, though, I'm terrified that somehow, at the last minute, Diego will be torn from me the way Moire and Schroedinger were before him. I don't want to mourn for another child, especially not one where we know he has so nearly arrived. I've had two children miscarry, each more traumatically than the last.
Please, please, kiddo, hang on another few months. Be well, for fucks sakes, be well. S. Mackie 08:10, 16 February 2011 (GMT)

Be well Macksting, Sheyona, and Diego! We want to meet ya'll and hang, after all Syagrius 22:32, 19 February 2011 (GMT)
"We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately."
Sending you & your lady person some good birthing energy. Be well indeed! Re: being terrified of one's ability to parent - it's par for the course. But if you have/had reasonably decent parents that's 9/10ths of the battle right there - just take a page from their book and trust your gut. Alternately if you had rotten parents but have the self awareness to work out some of what they did wrong that's 9/10ths of the battle right there - just don't take any pages from their book and trust your gut. Not in Cities.  :) --Dragon 14:19, 7 April 2011 (BST)
Do Cities PCs even have a sex, within the sphere of the game? Damn near every last one of us is a gender bender regardless. Sexual characteristics may be something restricted to NPCs.
If so, maybe that's the reason for adventuring in this game. Rising above being merely neuter freaks of nature, we advance outward and attempt to become something greater because, though we can make love, we can't have kids. We'll never be heirs. As such, we must slay dragons to gain our titles, which live and die with us. S. Mackie 22:13, 7 April 2011 (BST)
Some of the Cities PC's are married - Domentzia and I have wedding rings to prove it ;) -- otherwise I always thought of the Cities-zens like the Lego mini-figures from the late '70s and early 80's Syagrius 05:32, 8 April 2011 (BST)
ISTR the getting-knighted message including something along the lines of "The 'king explains that all knights are known as 'Sir', even female ones." As for heirs, I'm leaving everything to Puff.  ;) --Dragon 13:37, 8 April 2011 (BST)
So I s'pose we have sex, we just don't care about it.
That came out all wrong. S. Mackie 19:00, 16 April 2011 (BST)

It's been a very fun few years, but I've been playing less and less often, so I think it's time I headed off to Holiday Island on a more or less permanent basis.

Before I go, there are a couple of items that could possibly be of interest to other players - mainly three Familiars (at Elite, Deadly and Competent) which eat Bottles of Cheap Rose, Bottles of Wine, and Bottles of Rum, respectively. Someone might also be interested in taking over my Guild - I've let the teleporters collapse, but there's a goodly amount of cash in the treasury, and two Guild Factories making Cucumber Sandwiches (well, one makes the Salad Dressing and one makes the Sandwiches).

If you're interested in any of the above, please PAYG andrewsi - ta! Andrewsi 12:41, 12 February 2011 (GMT)

We'll miss you, man. S. Mackie 08:00, 13 February 2011 (GMT)

jane and john everyone are both trying to start guilds now; They've each deployed a guild permit in totally different areas, yet neither of them seems able to dig the slightest bit of a hole to put rooms in. Any help in this endeavour would be most appreciated. They would prefer taht Jane's guild, located on Holiday Isle be the successful one of the two, but failing that, John's guild is north of earth city.

I'd be happy to help but am a total newb when it comes to all things guild. What do I need tool-wise and/or skill wise to assist?

YARP (Yet Another Retirement Post)

It has come to the point where I don't even want to be bothered to check in weekly for AP-burn and pet feeding, so it's off to Holiday Island for me. This has happened a few times before, but I have a feeling it's going to be permanent this time. I am giving away the following pets, along with all the food (or food ingredients) I have for them:

  • Elite Goldfish
  • Elite Big Kat
  • Deadly Giant Dung Beetle
  • Deadly Giant Dung Beetle
  • Competent Sea Horsie (1% Evil)
  • Competent Hamster (0 damage, 1% Evil)
  • Mostly Harmless Dragon (Earth aligned, too big to ride, fond of bacon)

If you are interested in providing a home for any of these animals, please note me here or in-game. I'd hate for them to die (except for the hamster, who I was considering allowing to become 100% evil so he would cuddle his owner for 0 damage every round of combat). -Scrumbucket 20:02, 18 July 2010 (BST)

So sorry to hear of another retirement, but if there's no new content, it's understandably difficult to maintain interest. About the dragon -- who is it, what are its genes? -- Sertularian 23:08, 18 July 2010 (BST)
Eh, to be honest, I've lost interest in the Internet in general. (I'm retiring from pretty much all my online games.) For those interested, the dragon is Aylee. -Scrumbucket 00:33, 19 July 2010 (BST)
We'll miss you, Scrumbucket. S. Mackie 22:22, 29 July 2010 (BST)

On the Retirment Bandwagon

Just like Rhapsodie, I have decided to retire my character for a while and don't want to see my pets die on Holiday Island. Leave a message on my Talk page and i'll give them away free with whatever food I have left for them.03:07, 10 October 2009 (BST) --Kressida

Dragon Tintaglia- Poor Earth aligned. Eats Earth weapons, tailismans etc and Bacon.

  • Knight Mare - Competant Grey Female War Horse. She is one of the original Pwny eggs so I would be sad to see her die.
  • Peppercorn - Harmless Black Female Sea Horsie.
  • Rocket - Harmless Pinto Female Winged Horsie.

  • Flipper - Competant Goldfish.

I also have a variety of dead pets: Icleus- Pinto Female War Horsie, Bilvark Black Male War Horsie, Killdozer- Dead Minrilax

Pets Free to Good Home

I've decided it's time to retire my characters; I just don't get to play enough anymore (having a baby has worn me out!). But I don't want to see my pets die in my inventory if I can avoid it, so I have a number of pets (including one special one, listed first) free to a good home. Palantir me or leave a message on my page if you're interested! -- Rhapsodie 00:15, 6 October 2009 (BST)

  • Friday - elite black male Horsie. I bought him at auction during the Cities Festival, so he has double the normal AP and food points. I'd especially hate to see this guy die seeing as he cost me real money!!
  • Billomina - elite black female Horsie.
  • Hunter - deadly pinto male War Horsie.

(Also a dead Horsie and War Horsie. Resurrection services available.)

  • Adamant - competent male air-aligned dragon. Has breath weapon but can't be ridden. Likes cow-stuff, blood and tribbles.

(Also a dead fire-aligned dragon. Resurrection services available.)

  • Bibbi - male with sharp teeth and Military Fashion 1, Cute Fashion 1, Punk Fashion 1 fashions.
  • Horus - male with Punk Fashion 2 Cute Fashion 1 Industrial Fashion 1 fashions.
  • Waffles - female with warm fur and Kinky Fashion 1, Goth Fashion 1, Industrial Fashion 1 fashions.

  • Rawr - dangerous big kat.
  • Shaun - dangerous electric sheep.
  • Frankenstinky - mostly harmless giant dung beetle.
  • Mustardseed - average familiar. Likes chocolate mudslides.

Agreed - bummer. also posted to your talk page. Syagrius 17:09, 6 October 2009 (BST)

Bowling Alley

Bowling Alley now open (Monday October 5th, 11:50 PM game time) at 92E 91N, courtesy of your friendly neighborhood cheese...

Tired and Exhausted

Are not the same thing, apparently. After a bit of work on my lady wife Tzia's part ( 7 total hours of labor ) -- I'm a daddy for the first time!

Public link to the photo album - everyone should be able to see it.

Isabel Marie was born Sept 22, 2009 at 6:44pm (Pacific Daylight Time) weighing in at 8 pounds even and measuring 20.5 inches long.

Born mad at the world, she opened her eyes and screamed bloody murder at the doctor as soon as the head was clear. Syagrius 21:31, 25 September 2009 (BST)

It's not Citiesberg, but it is working! I've just finished implementing Marketeer ( and hope it'll prove useful to some people. Ream 22:08, 19 September 2009 (BST)

You rock. Herbacious 10:30, 20 September 2009 (BST)
FANTASTIC!! This is EVEN BETTAR THAN CITIESBERG! for a sec there, I thought a search page like on CB might be nice, but forget it! I will be happy to ctrl+F my way around this page. CHANGE NOTHING! AmishRobots 02:10, 25 September 2009 (BST)
Thanks both for the complements :) One thing to note is that while Marketeer is updating every 30 minutes by taking new market and mall feeds from Cities, it seems that those xml feeds themselves might not be updating as rapidly. (That or that are a couple of strange data points in there. e.g. I am apparently selling 50 Daemonic Letter Openers at the Southern Market. This is a fabricated lie on the part of markets.xml!!!) Rest assured, it's showing the best data available but apologies if there's something misleading! Ream 02:39, 25 September 2009 (BST)

Hello. Been trying to access Citiesberg at and it wants a username and password. Does anyone know if this is a permanent new move, or if it's just a blip? Not sure who's responsible for Citiesberg, but whoever it is deserves kudos - I feel lost and lonely without it. Herbacious 19:14, 12 September 2009 (BST)

The Department of Ludicrous Actions Brings you...

... the Bridge to Northwich.

Yes, that's right. We now have bridge access from Bentnob to Oz, the Roc Totem, and Northwich. Well, because of the Icepack, we had to stop 28 squares north of Northwich, but if you bring Winged Boots and or Daedalus Wings, you should be able to make it the rest of the way on foot.

(Why? Why not?)

There are many other things that can be done with this:

  • Tributary Bridges to Bleak Island, Phw's Island, Dragon, Caroline Island, and the Bunny Isles
  • Maintaining the sucker. In about 4-6 months time, the icepack should be melted enough that the bridge can go direct to the gates of Northwich.
  • Pave the ocean by extending the bridge. Again, why not?

I will leave this to the aformentioned Really Bored Players to take it from here. -- Thog 04:14, 11 July 2009 (BST)

Prizes Ho!

So some of you may recall I had a birthday party a few months ago. We had party games. I never gave out prizes. Ooops.

Well, now we have many many prizes to give out, but it's up to the winners to do so. See here for details. Note that Scrumbucket is currently on the clock. -- Thog 00:19, 13 June 2009 (BST)

So we're just about done, and we have something on the order of a half dozen unclaimed prizes. Any suggestions as to how they get parcelled out? -- Thog 00:58, 4 July 2009 (BST)
Jayco/Payco. I've not talked him up as a recipient of good cheer lately. S. Mackie 06:25, 4 July 2009 (BST)

Easter Eggs

sooo, this is a bit late, but "current events" seems to be a bit of a misnomer page lately anyway (should we rename this page to "In case anyone missed it" or "since you haven't been on IRC in a while..." sorry, back to the point. I've got these easter eggs, been offline for a while so i didn't notice them till recently. (I would assume they showed up around Easter maybe? Is there anything i can do with them besides eating them for small healing benefit? Somehow I just expect there to be some cool hidden benefit to them. Like, you know, an /easter egg/? WTF is a Scouter? It sorts under equipment, I've got two now, I'm even wearing one, and I must say that on me it looks good. Dendrast 02:43, 31 March 2009 (BST)
It goes on the face. I couldn't wear my Shades with it on. Is this some obscure slang we North Americans don't get? Dendrast 02:57, 31 March 2009 (BST)
Actually, I imagine this would be easier to understand for select North Americans than for some percentage of the UK, as it's from a Japanese animated show of... debatable worth, in my opinion. A Scouter is, in the setting of Dragonball Z, a manner in which to measure the opponent's chi or personal power or somesuch.
My little sister was a fan. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Personally, I think it's pro wrestling in anime format, which means it must serve a purpose to somebody in terms of giving a masculine soap-opera equivalent.
Some time ago, a piece of Youtube Poop came into existence which contained approximately fifteen seconds of DBZ looped, remixed, distorted, and stretched for a considerable length of time to emphasize that "it's over 9000!" The remix was almost lyrical in its accentuation of a far-too-common trope in that show, the measurement of and exasperation with an opponent's superpowers. S. Mackie 03:36, 31 March 2009 (BST)
Here's the video that started it all for those who are interested. Kaos Dragon 03:54, 31 March 2009 (BST)

Maybe if you put a Perl in one, you can play Cities in Cities and build IBM-Compatible PCs while you build IBM-Compatible PCs. --Naimoigiant 13:21, 17 March 2009 (GMT)
Nice idea. But a 486 CPU and you're more likely to be playing nethack. Schnorrer 14:48, 17 March 2009 (GMT)
Leading up to this point, I might actually have wanted a Beowulf cluster entirely composed of 486 machines. When this is done, I don't think that'll be the case.
64 cases, at that. S. Mackie 04:52, 20 March 2009 (GMT)

How Rude!

Patchouli, if you're reading this don't think I'll forget how rude you've been running off with my Acles that I erroneously passed onto you on a trading post. Watch your back Patchouli. Herbacious 09:09, 13 February 2009 (GMT)

Although there's no benefit to be gained from starting your own pentacle (I think), it's quite unsporting to not return those acles. However, I think this is best left to be done through PAYGs. If you do need an acle or two, please PAYG me. Corellis 22:38, 13 February 2009 (EST)
PAYG - You think so? I think it's far more satisfying to rant and rave in public! I mean, Patchouli might be in limbo and never get my message - what a waste of indignation that would be.Herbacious 10:36, 15 February 2009 (GMT)

The Lists

I just noticed that the 'King is hanging out in the Lists just south of his Palace. Does this mean we can joust??? --Tiltowait 20:15, 5 January 2009 (GMT)

I don't think so. Not unless the List Field has reappeared as well, which it hadn't last time I was there. Maybe he's just haginging around for old time's sake? Either way, you could test it by going to the tent and seeing if you can register. -- Rhapsodie 21:15, 5 January 2009 (GMT)
I saw this a month ago, registered, and hung out in the field for a bit before getting bored and withdrawing. Everything acted like normal, so I imagine you probably could joust if you had an opponent. -Scrumbucket 00:43, 6 January 2009 (GMT)

The Curse of the Terrible Humidor, revisited

Be careful what you wish for. You just may get it.

Upon the birth of my son, back in January, the Great Lords saw fit to present me with a magical Humidor. A wonderous device from which cigars could endlessly be produced. These cigars essentially had the same properties as fags in terms of AP gain, combined with HP loss with the slight risk of lowered max AP or HP too. I gave them out freely in celebration of the arrival of my little boy Zack on the planet. Many enjoyed them.

Now, Zack is crawling and has teeth, but the humidor has become a curse upon me. 'How? Why?' you may ask. Well, I have for too long now been availing myself of the benefits of AP gain, but the toll has been high. Oh yes. My max AP and HP are battered to the point now where I have to do something about it and rid myself of this monkey on my back.

My name is XXXXXXXXXX BortJr and I am a cigar addict.

This is my attempt to get clean. And also (heh heh heh) pass on the curse, and in doing so make the game just a tiny bit more interesting too.

(The only caveat to the offer I am about to make is that it be, at some point, loaned to PotatoEngineer for his quest. I thought that might be nice for him). However - he is also free to make an offer for it himself to keep permanently too, should he so wish.

Smoking cigars is a gamble. Some evenings I've been able, through a combination of Dragon Stone use and cigars, to gain several hundred extra AP in the space of a few minutes. If you've got a massive max AP & HP combination, achieved through various means, surely that's a risk you'd be willing to take? This unique item has its price. The toll it takes may be mighty. But maybe *you* could be the one to beat the odds. Maybe you would use Universal Solvent to destroy it. Maybe you could place it out of reach - guarded by Polychromatic Dragons, placed on the corpse of a mule, deep under the ground - a quest such as this could be your legacy to the game, perhaps? Or you could come up with another solution or scheme.

So - my desire is this: Offer me cucumber sandwiches and Hard Knocks itemsValuables so that I may regain my constitution. Offer me many of them. A great many. And to the highest bidder goes the terrible Cursed Humidor to do with as he, she or zhe wishes. (sorry, tenex :) ) Place bids here, we'll go until we seem to have a winner. --BortJr 04:49, 11 December 2008 (GMT)

10X, didn't you get rid of the Humidor for a very good reason? PotatoEngineer 03:18, 15 December 2008 (GMT)
Obviously auctioning off the humidor at the start was part of a cunning plan to rid himself of 1 million gold pieces. Marvellous, 10X! You have my utter respect. Corellis 22:21, 14 December 2008 (EST)
You really want it back, 10X? You are the rightful owner, so I won't bid against you. --JAD 19:20, 15 December 2008 (GMT)
I figured he was just being a smart-ass. Am I wrong? -- Thog 19:30, 15 December 2008 (GMT)

I'm going to be a Dad again around February time and Zack is getting a little sibling, so I figured I'd need it once more. I'm afraid my mighty sperm cannot be defeated by conventional methods of birth control, so I'm gonna need that humidor again. So my bid stands.10X 23:28, 15 December 2008 (GMT)

I've, um, been hitting the Rainbow Wand pretty hard lately. Hey, dude, can you help me get a fix? PotatoEngineer 18:36, 16 December 2008 (GMT)
Damn, now i have to determine if that stuff is worth more than a million gp --BortJr 06:05, 19 December 2008 (GMT)
MWAHAHAHAHA! Far better you than me.  :) PotatoEngineer 05:15, 20 December 2008 (GMT)

I don't know whats going on with this, but I offer 1 million gold, and a rainbow wand for the humidor. -Stien 20:08, 21 December 2008 (GMT)
As a point of order, Rainbow Wands break after ~10 uses, and in that time you would turn spirit or neutral or ice.... roughly ONCE. You'd be very unlikely to get shrimp/sewage/goth/pure, though 20 wands might get you one of those. But I'll tack on 200k gold to my last bid. See Big Brother.
