Prerequisite: Smelly Pete or none (see Location)
Reward: ???
Location: Access from either 1) dungeon beneath Harvey's farm (having helped out Smelly Pete), or 2) caves in the central area with a suitable Light Source.

A list of caves that leads to the SW Tunnels can be found at Terrain:Cave.

The tunnels is a labyrinth of passages, teleporters and store rooms. The tunnels are populated mainly by bats, rats, gygax and minotaurs. GPS doesn't work here, and standard maps don't cover the area.

  • In one area the tunnels open out into a 5x5 room in which can be found Manic Minotaurs. Manic Minotaurs can drop South-West Tunnel Maps, and plenty of other stuff.
  • In another area, you can find an ancient altar to insert an air talisman.
  • The teleports costs 1AP to use and takes you back to the Harvey's Farm entrance.
  • You can spend 10AP to have a rummage in the store rooms. If you go up the stairs (1AP) in a store room, you will end up above ground. The door locks behind you too, so you can't re-enter the tunnels via it.
  • It costs 1AP to exit to the surface via the caves.

A map (which is spoilery) of the tunnels can be found in Labyrinth. Explore and map out the maze yourself instead of going straight for the altar using the spoiler map! It's part of the fun.

Ancient Altar

The archaeologists here will give you a South-West tunnel talisman so you can go back when the excavation is finished. (Unfortunately, they will not give you another even if you use the first.) The hot lava surrounding the altar is rather scary.

There seems to be some excavation work going on here. The archaeologists tell you that these tunnels are centuries old, and they believe this altar was constructed before the four cities were founded.

They say they hope to publicise their findings soon, but there's still some more digging to do.

There is a guard standing here. He tells you that the archaeologists have been sent away for their continued well-being, and that the Great Lords won't take any responsibility for citizens going near the altar.

You notice an interesting talisman-shaped slot in the top of the altar..

After inserting an Air Talisman into the slot (1 AP) I got this message:

You lose an Air Talisman.
You place the Air Talisman into the altar, and feel a slight tingling in your hands.
Looking down, you notice that they appear to be fading away!
A few seconds later, they fade back into view.
On a side note, do the Great Lords take responsibility for anyone, ever? There are plenty of interesting ways to die, after all.... PotatoEngineer 17:26, 25 October 2006 (BST)

Removing it (also 1 AP) gave this:

You gain an Air Talisman.
You take the talisman out of the altar. You feel a little more present, somehow.

In the name of excitement I've decided to leave the talisman in the slot and see what happens (despite all that well-being stuff the guard told me). Presence is overrated anyway. I'll update when something happens. Zingus 04:16, 31 March 2006 (BST)

Sounds like it may have made you ghostly. Any chance you were then able to cross the lava to the north? Thog 05:07, 31 March 2006 (BST)
I still appear to have the same visibility to creatures, and don't have any new paths opened up to me at the moment. Perhaps there is some effect that takes place in daylight in terms of visibility. Zingus 05:18, 31 March 2006 (BST)
Just some more speculation: There's a symmetry implied in the picture around the altar, even the name south-west tunnels implies that there are going to be 4 sets. I would guess that the grey square two squares north is an altar that will take a fire talisman. You may not get an effect until you've activated all four altars. There also seems to be some parallels with the last coded message (4 statues around a great fire). I wonder if the catacombs will be the access to the north-west tunnels Hendsch 14:46, 31 March 2006 (BST)
Based on the entry on E.bstan's page, I think you may have it there -- Thog 23:14, 3 April 2006 (BST)
